AIBU to ask which milk your children drink?

So much conflicting advice, and I realize it's hardly a huge deal, but just wondered what kind of milk you all give your kids (full fat, semi skimmed, skimmed cows milk or other milks) and why? Also how old they are?

Interesting about the sugar- I was under the impression (from a nutritionist) that because the sugar in milk is naturally occurring that it doesn't 'count' as part of your daily sugar allowance/free sugar allowance? Same with (whole) fruit and veg... interesting to know what others do. We have skimmed for adults and semi skimmed for kids (4 and 8 both healthy weights) but will give them the skimmed if we run out of semi. I did buy them whole for a while...

Full fat organic milk for the whole family (I don't buy organic for most things). Children are 6 and 2. The 6 year old has milk on cereal and a very occasional hot milk/hot chocolate. The 2 year old has milk on cereal and about 2 cups of milk a day.

wonkylegs · 20/07/2017 21:12

Full fat for the 15month old
Semi-skimmed for the rest of us, we prefer the taste, not bothered by the fat content as we are big cheese eaters.

mrsRosaPimento · 20/07/2017 21:13

Full fat because it tastes better. 13 and 10 year olds. They have it with cereal and ds1 has it to drink sometimes.

early30smum · 20/07/2017 21:13

Should also add that we only buy organic milk unless we have run out and get a small carton from the corner shop until I can get to the supermarket.

Whole milk for us and our DS's.. used to have semi ourselves until we started buying whole for the Kids

Chasingsquirrels · 20/07/2017 21:15

Full fat - 11yo, 14yo & 45yo!

GreatBigPolarBear · 20/07/2017 21:16

Semi skimmed-that's what we have as I can't stand full fat in tea.
On the occasion that we've had full fat they've noticed the difference and not liked it.
They have full fat yogurt and other things though.

implantsandaDyson · 20/07/2017 21:16

Ours have semi skimmed - always have done from about 2.5. They're now 12, 9 and 6, they're quite big milk drinkers. We don't have milk ourselves so we just get what they'll drink.

Vinorosso74 · 20/07/2017 21:16

DD is 7 and drinks semi skimmed. DP likes semi skimmed best. I'm a bit meh about milk and would like to reduce dairy intake so any recommendations of other milks welcome. Didn't like alpro soya milk and would like to avoid added sugar/sweeteners/other crap. No allergies

GreatBigPolarBear · 20/07/2017 21:16

When dd was little and skinny I used to buy gold top jersey milk and mix it in with everything. She wouldn't touch it now though!

Smitff · 20/07/2017 21:17

Full fat in this house for everything. We just consume less of it than if it were low fat / skimmed etc. I grew up in the age of calorie counting being THE key to a healthy body. But I've just never believed in messing about with food. No scientific basis for this, mind.

summertimeandtheweatherisfine · 20/07/2017 21:17

Oat milk 8, nearly 6 & nearly 2

EllaHen · 20/07/2017 21:17

I count the sugar in fruit as sugar too. Body still responds to it as sugar.

I prefer berries.

DramaAlpaca · 20/07/2017 21:18

Full fat for everyone here.

LaContessaDiPlump · 20/07/2017 21:20

Soy milk for me DH and DS2, hazelnut milk for DS1. He likes it as it's chocolatey.

Chrisinthemorning · 20/07/2017 21:20

DS (5) full fat. He's pretty skinny. I read something about full fat having slightly more vitamins as some are fat soluble, not sure if that's correct?
He doesn't drink loads of milk now, on cereal and a cup of milk maybe every other day. He has it daily at school.

Smitff · 20/07/2017 21:21

vinorosso I've been making my own almond milk for a couple of years. Dead easy and tastes delicious (subjective of course).

Soak almonds in double or triple the volume of water overnight. Doesn't matter, it just plumps them up. Remove from water next morning. Put in blender with fresh water, 1.5x approx of volume. Not an exact science, just whatever. Strain through a muslin. Add pinch of salt and dash of vanilla extract. Done. Keeps for five days in fridge. Basically almond flavored water.

Tiptoethr0ughthetulips · 20/07/2017 21:23

My 2.5 yr old drinks a pint of whole milk a day. Milk man delivers and it's the first thing he asks for each morning. DH and I have skimmed but neither of us drink it, it's just for tea and cereal.

Polly99 · 20/07/2017 21:23

Early30smum: sugar is sugar regardless of origin.
But if it is from milk or fruit it at least has some accompanying vitamins or minerals.
Skimmed milk isn't massively more sugary than semi-skimmed but it is a bit, and given that there are hidden sugars in so many foods I'd rather have less of the ones I can easily control.

pinkdelight · 20/07/2017 21:25

That 1% fat milk with the orange lid. Switched from full fat when DC were 6ish.

chitofftheshovel · 20/07/2017 21:25

Full fat here too. I'm sure I remember hearing that the fat content helps the vitamins to be absorbed.

Also red top milk turns blue and has dye put in it to turn it back to white.

MrsPear · 20/07/2017 21:26

Fat consumption in this country has gone down but as a country we have go fatter - I blame the added sugar. That is what I try to avoid.

Back to question - full fat / blue top

1SquealingSquirrel · 20/07/2017 21:27

Full fat cows for 4.5 year old
Full fat goats for 2.5 year old (eczema)

Mumzypopz · 20/07/2017 21:28

Full fat, 12yr old. He is skinny as anything.
