AIBU to ask which milk your children drink?

So much conflicting advice, and I realize it's hardly a huge deal, but just wondered what kind of milk you all give your kids (full fat, semi skimmed, skimmed cows milk or other milks) and why? Also how old they are?

Milk is for baby cows

There you go Orangedaisy Grin

But it really is though. Many parts of the world don't drink it and they also don't have issues with obesity

kickingwillow · 20/07/2017 21:51

The dairy industry is also cruel beyond belief but people choose to ignore this.

Camomila · 20/07/2017 21:52

DS (15m) is still breastfed and doesn't like cows milk to drink but likes it on his cereal. I usually buy FF but sometimes I forget and buy semi skimmed and give him cereal with that instead (semi skimmed is my favourite, I thiink my tea tastes wrong with FF)

MunchyMunchkin · 20/07/2017 21:52

Semi skimmed all round here - me, DH, DD 23 months.
She only outgrew her milk allergy a month ago and I didn't see the point in giving her whole milk for 2 months until she turned two. She's already getting more fat and protein than she was on oat milk and eats like a horse so I'm not bothered.

YellowLawn · 20/07/2017 21:55

full fat
we don't drink milk though.
dc have it with cereals, I with tea/coffee. and it's sometimes used in cooking or baking.

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 20/07/2017 21:55

Oat milk. DS1 had CMPA, and excessive dairy including neat milk triggers my IBS, so its simpler buying the one milk particularly as it's long life. DS1 hasn't acquired a taste for cows milk since his body has been able to accept it.

I would buy full fat milk over reduced fats. It's a low fat product anyway, the fats have useful nutrients, and fat is more satisfying reducing the desire for additional snacks.
Generally, I buy foods in their original form, not reduced fats/sugars. We're all a healthy size.

minipie · 20/07/2017 21:56

2 and 4 - full fat, sometimes semi skimmed if we've run out of ff. DH and I have semi skimmed mostly though I like ff in coffee

SpaghettiAndMeatballs · 20/07/2017 21:58

Full fat. DS1 (6) only drinks milk or water. DS2 (3) will drink anything he can get his hands on, so I try to only keep milk and water in the house for him too!

We all drink it, because I'm not mucking about keeping 2 different kinds of milk in the house!

ColdFeetAndHotCakes · 20/07/2017 21:58

I have to have semi skimmed lactofree for my tea, but tend to find it doesn't go off as quickly so my boyfriend now has this as well because he only has is with cereal once in a blue moon.

I read somewhere that goats and sheep milks are more easily digestible than cows milk to humans, so this is what I plan to give my (future) children.

If I wasn't lactose intolerant I probably would just go with full fat cows milk.

Ecureuil · 20/07/2017 22:02

Full fat for the whole family (DC 3 and 2). No plans to change it. All healthy weight. Also use proper butter, full fat Greek yoghurt etc.

Nousernameforme · 20/07/2017 22:03

semi here cause full fat makes youngest ds who still bfs trump. The others all had full fat till well past 5 I just don't buy it anymore as I don't like the taste and it saves having more than one open bottles of milk at a time

Ecureuil · 20/07/2017 22:07

I think this thread isn't reflective of the vast majority of the population. Everyone I know has full fat cows to age 2, then semi skimmed after for everyone

Everyone I know drinks full fat milk. I also don't get why you'd switch at 2... milk is a low fat product anyway. My DC (3 and 2) are both 50th centile for weight and always have been so why would I bother switching them to a lower fat product?
I'm a healthy weight, have always drank full fat milk.

Cailleach666 · 20/07/2017 22:07

My kids drank no milk at all ( apart from breastmilk). No dairy either, no butter, no yogurt, no cheese, no cream. they still don't.

They think it is rank.

SuperBeagle · 20/07/2017 22:08

Full fat for everyone in this household, DH and myself included.

Children are 7.5, 6, 2 and a 7mo who will go onto cow's milk at 12mo.

Coconut and almond milk make me break out like mad, and none of us have dairy intolerances so it seems unnecessary to bother with the faff of alternative milks, and I think full fat is a better option on the whole than lighter milks (that goes for all products - generally full fat is better than the alternative).

SuperBeagle · 20/07/2017 22:10

Many parts of the world don't drink it and they also don't have issues with obesity

This is hilarious. Milk is not the reason that many western countries are facing an obesity crisis. Humans in these areas began tolerating dairy around 3,300 years ago.

notangelinajolie · 20/07/2017 22:12

Whole milk for little ones.

flumplet · 20/07/2017 22:14

Full fat and organic if I can be arsed. Dh isn't fussed on organicness so more often than not It's plain. Ds is a skinny mite he literally only drinks milk at home and water at school so we get full fat.

QuitMoaning · 20/07/2017 22:14

Semi skimmed but my son is 19.

When he was about 2 I switched him onto semi skimmed as there was only the two of us and I cannot stand creamy stuff so only had semi skimmed and got fed up of buying both. He ate a very varied diet with plenty of calcium so was not concerned about anything lacking. He is a strapping lad and extremely fit with a healthy attitude to eating so it worked out fine for us. It was a considered decision as I knew I was going against advice at the time.

Jemimapuddleduk · 20/07/2017 22:16

Full fat for 4 yo and aptimil toddler for 2yo (he won't drink cows milk).

beela · 20/07/2017 22:20

Semi skimmed for tea & coffee, full fat (preferably organic) for everything else. DC are 6 and 3.

The HV tried to get me to switch to semi-skimmed at DD's 2.4yr check. I told her that both of my DC are a healthy weight, with DS bordering on skinny, so I wasn't going to. She said that, since they are on the same centile for height and weight, that she would allow that. Thanks, HV.

indigox · 20/07/2017 22:21

He won't drink any, he'll have full fat on cereal or in hot chocolate as its the only one I buy.

requestingsunshine · 20/07/2017 22:25

Full fat - ages 4 - 15. It's all I buy. None of us are fat.

MrsGabor · 20/07/2017 22:26

Skimmed for adults
Blue Oatly for DS who has dairy & soya allergies

PolaDeVeboise · 20/07/2017 22:27

'Blue' all the way here. Eldest DS (10) loves to drink it. Youngest (8), not so much.
