name change for this as it gives away location.

this roundabout does my bloody head in. particularly to go from redlands down bournemouth road. do it multiple times a day and everyone seems to take it sifferently. what lane would you use?

Am I the only one who can't see a middle lane?
Perhaps everyone else would use the right-hand lane for turning right and just have head-on crashes with all the on-coming traffic

TizzyDongue · 19/07/2017 22:11

Can anyone give me a sensible explanation as to why magic roundabouts exist?

thiswillhavetodo · 19/07/2017 22:13

I would use left lane.... imo you can go round a little in left lane (whilst indicating!!!) but shouldn't cut straight across from right hand lane that's what causes accidents!

StatisticallyChallenged · 19/07/2017 22:15

Looking at it on streetview I can actually see why it's a bit awkward; but I would use the left lane but take a relatively right position within it and only pull out when I would be able to get past the mouth of the left hand exit before some bugger came round hoping to exit.

Is the problem that you have people using the right hand lane to go straight across the A35, instead of the left hand lane (as per road markings?)

Stopyourmessingaround · 19/07/2017 22:17

Ha! I use this roundabout all the time - absolute nightmare. The reason for all the problems is because nobody heeds the keep clear signs, there's a second roundabout towards Ashley Rd and there's a bus stop just off the roundabout. You need to be in the left lane from Redlands (not a dual carriage way - it's just two lanes coming out of a retail park) to head down Bournemouth Rd (pretty sure there are arrows once you're on the roundabout). The right hand lane is for heading towards Ashley Rd x

Delatron · 19/07/2017 22:20

I'm struggling to see why it's so complicated! I don't see why anyone would be in the right hand lane.

MaximaDeWit · 19/07/2017 22:22

Left hand lane, no indication onto roundabout and indicate left when you pass the first round cot

Pantah630 · 19/07/2017 22:27

Left hand if no other traffic in it, otherwise right hand was how I was taught years ago. Personally I ride a bike so shoot through the middle of both lanes when visiting JL home bargains for cheap chocolate

MsSusanStoHelit · 19/07/2017 22:33

I'd use the left hand lane for the OP's roundabout.

But that magic roundabout can sod right off. I've only done it once and I'd rather drive to another town than do it again, it's baffling. I realised it was coming and worked out what to do before we left but even then it was horrendous and hardly any one else seemed to know what to do - people were just careering around the bloody thing looking like they wanted to close their eyes and pray.

PineappleScrunchie · 19/07/2017 22:37

That's not a roundabout. This is a roundabout...

Ollivander84 · 19/07/2017 22:38

This one makes me swear every single day
Coming from the bottom of the photo and wanting the second exit
There are two lanes, left land has a left hand arrow only, right lane has a straight on and right arrow
People use the right lane for the second exit because the actual road sign says "local" on the roundabout diagram. But to me a left hand arrow is first exit only...
I drive all the way around it now to exit otherwise i have someone on the left of me

Ollivander84 · 19/07/2017 22:41

Pic of road markings. Everyone says local means first and second exit but the arrow to me overrides that

plantsitter · 19/07/2017 22:51

Can't you just let them go rather than driving all the way round? Or slot in between? Clearly you're in the right but unless people are going way too fast on a roundabout it should be all right in the end?

Ollivander84 · 19/07/2017 22:54

Doesn't work, as I indicate and go to exit, if I look over my left shoulder there's a car literally there. Because effectively you're travelling at the same speed but in two lanes and trying to use one exit. The amount of abuse is unreal as well Sad

plantsitter · 19/07/2017 22:57

I think you are technically meant to move over to the left after the first exit - that's what the helpful motorway ones with markings suggest. But obvs if everyone else is doing it wrong that won't help!

Ollivander84 · 19/07/2017 23:08

Yeah I can't move left because there's someone using the left lane for the second exit. It's an absolute nightmare

CappuccinoSprinkles · 19/07/2017 23:26

How does that magic roundabout work? I think I would cry if faced with that, please tell me where it is so I can avoid it.

lrb978 · 19/07/2017 23:27

On that specific roundabout, going from Redlands to Bournemouth Rd, I'd stop in the left hand lane. It is difficult though when so many drivers do so many different things.

As for a really awkward roundabout, what about this one? Especially if you come off the M6 at J7 on the eastbound carriageway to go south on the A34/come from the A34 going north to get onto the M6 going west.

CappuccinoSprinkles · 19/07/2017 23:29

Actually looking at the magic one, as long as you know which Exit you want and make sure to stop at the hive way lines I can see getting around it. You have to treat it like a series of mini roundabouts and try to forget about the big one in the middle. Just take each section at a time and try not to lose count and miss your main exit.

needsomesunshineandwine · 19/07/2017 23:36

Left hand lane.

Flisspaps · 20/07/2017 18:42

@AngeloftheSouth84

To me the line in red in my pic is the outside lane. The left hand one?

To me the inside lane (tucked up inside the roundabout) is for the very last exit only.

I live in Telford, the land of the roundabout with pointless traffic lights on

BluePancakes · 20/07/2017 19:22

Cappuccino you're right. I live in the town with the magic roundabout that Pineapple posted, and it's really easy - I was taken across there on my driving test! The correct approach is to treat them all as mini-roundabouts. It does make things easier if you are in the correct lane to begin with, but even if you're not, you can go around again.

Imagine you're at the bottom of a 5-pointed star/asterisk and the other exits are labelled anticlockwise: L1 L2 R3 R4. If you want to go L1 or L2, you need to be in the left lane, and R3 or R4, you need to be in the right lane.
L1: Left, left
L2: left, right, left
R3: right, left, right
R4: right , right.

It is much easier when confronted with it, rather than trying to describe it in text, honest!

AngeloftheSouth84 · 20/07/2017 20:51

I think your terminology is wrong. The line in red in your pic is the inside lane. Its to do with the flow of traffic rather than its position on the roundabout. Where you have more than one lane, the left hand lane is in the inside, and you overtake on the outside .
