name change for this as it gives away location.

this roundabout does my bloody head in. particularly to go from redlands down bournemouth road. do it multiple times a day and everyone seems to take it sifferently. what lane would you use?

its only difficult here because the standard of driving is atrocious on that road.

Unless the roadmarkings tell you otherwise then the right hand lane is only for turning right.

You are going straight on, so should stay in the left.

I dont know this roundabout so no idea if there are arrows on the ground telling you otherwise.

Groupie123 · 19/07/2017 21:34

Middle lane at redlands then move to left lane as you hit the roundabout. Have several of these big roundabouts in my area- some with 4 lanes apiece. Go really slowly - bound to be an idiot who has no clue.

Yes, like you Groupie

It isnt a "middle lane" its only left and right. Right is for turning right.

RadioGaGoo · 19/07/2017 21:36

This is the same as the Tollworth roundabout off the A3 in Surrey. No one knows what to do there either!

plantsitter · 19/07/2017 21:38

Redlands looks like a dual carriageway, in which case I would assume Bournemouth Rd had 2 lanes too and stay in whichever lane I happened to be in. Then I would either accidentally cut you up on the other side our let you go first when I realised it only had one.

Just being honest!

Flisspaps · 19/07/2017 21:41

Outside lane if going straight on.!

dementedpixie · 19/07/2017 21:42

The photo suggests only one lane into Bournemouth road with two lanes going from Bournemouth road (3 lanes in total not 4)

Delatron · 19/07/2017 21:43

Why are people taking about a middle lane? There are only two lanes?? Therefore on this situation it is left hand lane for first exit and straight on, right hand lane is right turn only.

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 19/07/2017 21:46

It looks like you could use both lanes, but be prepared to merge shortly after exiting as there is a double lane exit off.
Keeping left is the default layout in the highway code.

This one irritates me for similar reasons. Both lanes are marked for straight on when using the dominant route from NE to SW. When correctly using the right hand lane for straight on, the number of times you get cut up by a smartarse undertaking from behind on a short merging zone forcing you towards oncoming traffic is ridiculous. That's despite clearly indicating on the approach to the exit. It's busy and fast due to its size, and a bit of a free for all, and particularly tough when people don't bother with indicators as you can't read their road position to judge their intentions.

fuckingroundabout · 19/07/2017 21:46

they arent dual carriageways.

I suspect part of the reason people use the right hand lane is because the left is nearly always blocked by people going down ashley road but still

Left lane and expect some idiots to be in the right lane - wait for them and give them a toot to make them aware of their error Grin

mumthatruns · 19/07/2017 21:50

@fuckingroundabout I know the roundabout well. For some reason it confuses everyone!

I do left hand lane for Bournemouth Rd.

AngeloftheSouth84 · 19/07/2017 21:54

Sorry but your picture is useless unless you tell us where you are coming from and which exit you are taking
If you read the first post you would know Hmm

Confused77777777 · 19/07/2017 21:55

We have the lovely 'magic roundabout' near us - one big roundabout with small ones round the outside ! If you look there are cars going both ways round the big one ! Confuses the shit outta me !!! And it's actually quite funny to look at other drivers faces - majority look completely lost !

how would you do this roundabout?
SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 19/07/2017 21:57

There's a beauty of road planning (presumably by a non driver) near me where the lanes are clearly laid out so that the left lane serves exits 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 leaving the right hand lane for the sole purposes of a U-turn Confused

Naturally no one follows the roundabout like this, because it would force right turning traffic into odd corners (it's quite angular and is under a flyover which also restricts the view), so again, it turns into a free for all as traffic follows a more natural line.

The reality is that some junctions have their own lore that has little to do with the Highway Code.

AngeloftheSouth84 · 19/07/2017 21:57

The middle one.
Indicate right just to be clear
What middle lane? There are only two lanes. Indicate right for going straight on? Jesus.Hmm

Fruitcocktail6 · 19/07/2017 21:59

Am I the only one who can't see a middle lane? There's two lanes coming on to the roundabout, the other 'lane' is the other side of the road.

I don't see how it could be anything other than the left hand lane.

fuckingroundabout · 19/07/2017 22:03

i remember being a car passanger on the huge paris one and having my eyes shut the whole time!

AngeloftheSouth84 · 19/07/2017 22:03

Outside lane if going straight on.
I presume you mean inside lane? Inside as in left-hand? The right-hand lane is the outside.

Twickerhun · 19/07/2017 22:06

Ok when I posted the first 'middle lane' comment the op hadn't posted the picture - it only appeared later (Mn must be slow uploading images tonight). So I thought the op was asking a truely baffling question. With the photo now it's actually possible to give a correct answer. My comment was just random following on from the original first post.

Twickerhun · 19/07/2017 22:07

Jesus will forgive me Angelof the south

TizzyDongue · 19/07/2017 22:07

The left lane - wouldn't have considered the right one (not the middle one wherever that is).

Why are people saying the middle/right lane?

I do think it's compulsory to have a minimum of one roundabout in all towns where people seem to think (despite not being signposted as) the standard lane positioning doesn't apply.

AngeloftheSouth84 · 19/07/2017 22:07

Middle lane at redlands then move to left lane as you hit the roundabout.
If you were going to move to the left-hand lane as you hit the roundabout, and you weren't in the left-hand lane approaching the roundabout, you would end up cutting everyone up. AND THERE IS NO MIDDLE LANE ON REDLANDS
