Why do they do this? It makes no difference at all.
I would never bite them, but I do think about it.

OP posts:
MrsOverTheRoad · 17/07/2017 10:50

It reminds me of women who fan their EYES when they're going to cry! Grin I sort of like it.

I live in South Australia...summers here are like...well, hotter than you've ever imagined unless you live in Africa or somewhere...people here never fan their faces with their hands. It woud be a ridiculous waste of energy.

They carry actual fans...whirry ones with batteries. Some people carry hand fans...the paper sort...but few and far between.

ConstanceCraving · 17/07/2017 10:52

Op on the wind up?

PovertyPain · 17/07/2017 10:52

scareyclown noteveryonewhoflapswithadickisaman

I'm now picturing someone flapping a dick in their face. 😮😆

I'm now sitting in a cafe, peeping from behind my iPad to see if I can spot any fellow Mumsnetters. flap flap flap flappity flap

Fernanie · 17/07/2017 10:52

I would never bite them
o_O

PovertyPain · 17/07/2017 10:53

I'm now wondering why I used the term 'I'm now' twice. 😳

user1489675144 · 17/07/2017 10:53

A slight breeze to cool off?

Much worse people who do this when they cry... or dab around their make up

Minor things though in the bigger picture

lanouvelleheloise · 17/07/2017 11:10

"Much worse people who do this when they cry"

Only they're mostly not - they're covering up the fact they have lost the ability to cry under the manicures and layers of foundation.

NooNooHead1981 · 17/07/2017 11:11

I remember flapping my hands in front of my face during an awful hangover after a night out with DH. I have no idea why I did it, nor why I thought it would make my hangover any better.

DH has never let me forget about it and always reminds me how silly I looked doing it! Whenever he gets the chance to take the mick out of me for it, he does! I do it again occasionally just to make us laugh. Lol

Camomila · 17/07/2017 11:38

Culture as well...I'm Italian and incapable of having any sort of emotion/thought without gesticulating at least a bit Grin

I think it also conveys someone isn't coping with the heat...last time I did it I got offered a seat on the train (I'm young and not pregnant) Good thing too as I have a bit of habit of fainting on trains in the hot weather...I think it's the combination of the heat and the swaying motion.

RebelRogue · 17/07/2017 12:26

@claraschu i might look silly but deffo not feminine with sweat everywhere, red faced, tongue lolling out and flapping. Grin

HateSummer · 17/07/2017 12:28

😂 So odd. Maybe they want to be cool.

I don't like people who run their fingers through open hair when they're queuing in traffic in the car. It's so try hard to be cool. And the ones who lean on the window with their elbow hanging out. So 80's.

EnidButton · 17/07/2017 12:57

Bite them?

What? Confused

The arm out of the car window thing is so air blows up the their sleeve onto their sweaty armpit.

paxillin · 17/07/2017 12:59

But OP promised not to bite, which is nice. Always better not to bite until much later.

TheNaze73 · 17/07/2017 13:07

I like it. People that do that look ridiculous.

HateSummer · 17/07/2017 13:16

The arm out of the car window thing is so air blows up the their sleeve onto their sweaty armpit.

Wow. That's sick.

Tazerface · 17/07/2017 13:43

I do it. It wafts some air on my face when I'm hot.

Go on try it OP.

Tazerface · 17/07/2017 13:44

@HateSummer - why? Confused

HateSummer · 17/07/2017 13:53

I don't know why. Grin It just sounds grim.

TheoriginalLEM · 17/07/2017 13:55

i flap my hands in front of my eyes at work if im about to cry - it works!!

im a veterinary nurse and often have to deal with very sad situations but need to hold it together in front of owners. Of course it doesn't physically stop tears but the flap outside the door means i ca remain professional when i just want to sob with them. Ok so it works about 90% of the time.

DeleteOrDecay · 17/07/2017 13:56

Seriously? Who cares? It doesn't effect how you go about your life.

Jesus Christ, people can't do anything these days without someone running off to bitch on the internet about it.

MaidenMotherCrone · 17/07/2017 13:59

As a menopausal woman I don't give a toss if anyone thinks I look stupid. When you are suffering an internal inferno you will do anything to find some relief. At home I'd just strip off, in a meeting it wouldn't go down so well.

On the back of this thread I've just ordered a phone fan but I'll probably lose/forget it and go back to my silly hand fanning.

OstentatiousWanking · 17/07/2017 14:00

I'm now picturing someone flapping a dick in their face

We've all been there.

midnightmisssuki · 17/07/2017 14:04

whats it to you OP? Bizarre thread! Live and let live for goodness sake!

ellestyle · 17/07/2017 14:07

Do men do it though? i've never actually seen any men do that. Aren't there lots of things that are peculiar to women only, just as there are lots of things peculiar to men, and let's be happy for that.

Eolian · 17/07/2017 14:14

Quite apart from the fact that it does waft a bit of air at you and maybe cool you down a bit, it's also a gesture which says "Phew it's hot isn't it!". In the same way that thumbs up means "Great" and a shrug means indifference. It would be a bit boring if we had no gestures at all.
