Not really AIBU - just want to hear your thoughts really.

I don't often watch it, but think it's nice that they've finally cast a woman as the Doctor :)

OP posts:
BoneyBackJefferson · 17/07/2017 17:21

I (after much thought) don't care that the doctor is female, I just hope that they don't turn the men in to idiots, creeps and imbeciles as seems to be the norm with female leads.

Boney - it isn't just chaps who are Whovians, lots of women are too.

BoneyBackJefferson · 17/07/2017 17:53

DameDeDoubtance

it isn't just chaps who are Whovians, lots of women are too.

I didn't say otherwise, I said that they are die hard fans who fought to bring the show back. but yes some are female and some females are against the sex change.

DameDeDoubtance · 17/07/2017 18:56

I'm a die hard fan too, tv series old and new, books and audio books.

I would never talk about an actors appointment the way that some people have because I am not a raving misogynist.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 17/07/2017 19:02

If the point of this is equality, then as some of the media have pointed out today, it'll all be for nought if she's not earning the same salary as Peter Capaldi. The BBC will be talking the talk but not walking the walk. They are are going to have to publish BBC salaries very soon, so guess we'll find out.......

BoneyBackJefferson · 17/07/2017 19:41

DameDeDoubtance

But you are not all die hard fans and their opinion doesn't always make them raving misogynists, they just have a different opinion to you.

DameDeDoubtance · 17/07/2017 20:41

The raving misogynists I saw were definite raving misogynists, quite easy to spot.

BoneyBackJefferson · 17/07/2017 21:18

but not all against are raving misogynists, in the same way that not all for are rabid feminists.

donquixotedelamancha · 17/07/2017 21:36

"We will only have equality when women have the right to be mediocre."

Two words: Theresa May.

QuimJongUn · 17/07/2017 21:40

Of all the hurt menz feelz on the internet today this dude takes the biscuit. Getting his nob in a knot to this extent because a woman has been cast to play a fictional alien. (DM comments section, obvs.) Poor wee snowflake 😂

Jodie Whittaker to be 13th Doctor Who
BoneyBackJefferson · 17/07/2017 22:01

you lose all credibility when you use the term "menz"

DameDeDoubtance · 17/07/2017 22:08

I didn't say that everyone against was a misogynist, but there has been a huge amount of misogynistic comments about this.

TabascoToastie · 17/07/2017 22:16

To be fair, the majority of posters on GallifreyBase are thrilled it's a woman. Plenty of GB posters said they'd stop watching if it was NOT a woman. And an awful lot of the posters ranting and raving have never posted before. No one's views are being "steam rollered"; it's not the job of a TV show to give fans what they want and it's physically impossible to do something that all fans will agree on.

Look at Sherlock. Literal death threats because Sherlock and Watson didn't end up together romantically. Yet the idea probably never even occurred to the average viewer. The tiny percentage that makes up hardcore Internet fandom (and the even smaller percentage that makes up individual ships or causes) cause the most noise but they aren't more important than the silent majority.

BoneyBackJefferson · 17/07/2017 22:18

The majority of views that I have seen have been those that don't like change (bizarre I know, given the show) or can't see what a female lead will bring to the show.

I have seen misogynist views, but then I have seen rabid feminist views and I have seen name calling and belittling from both sides.

But what people seem to be missing is that it won't matter how good an actress she is if the scripts are as bad as they have been for Capaldi, or too assistant based like they have been and not give the actor/actress the chance to own the role.

TabascoToastie · 17/07/2017 22:39

Yes, I've always said the show stands or falls on the quality of the scripts.
This past series was fantastic. Capaldi's earlier ones? Eh...

QuimJongUn · 17/07/2017 23:15

My use of the term 'menz' was the thing that bothered you from that post? Okay Hmm

SoupDragon · 18/07/2017 01:10

I always assume that people who use the word "menz" have nothing worthwhile to say.

DameDeDoubtance · 18/07/2017 06:26

I think it's disingenuous if we don't acknowledge that there has been a huge misogynistic backlash against Jodie.

Nude pictures in the papers, vile comments from men who cannot stand women to gain any ground. This is not 50/50, it's no where near 50/50.

This shit hasn't a hope of improving if we continually dismiss it and don't even discuss it.

By the way someone mentioned Theresa May as an example that mediocre women are allowed to succeed. She is more a case of the glass ceiling than equality between the sexes.

TizzyDongue · 18/07/2017 06:36

So 'menz' is credibility losing, and 'rabid feminist' is totally acceptable?

BoneyBackJefferson · 18/07/2017 06:37

QuimJongUn

What soupdragon said.

BoneyBackJefferson · 18/07/2017 06:41

TizzyDongue

"Rabid feminist" was used to show the other extreme from "misogynist", context is the key.

BoneyBackJefferson · 18/07/2017 06:46

DameDeDoubtance

I think it's disingenuous if we don't acknowledge that there has been a huge misogynistic backlash against Jodie.

It would be disingenuous if we don't acknowledge that there is a huge amount of support for Jodie.

The only headline I have seen about her stripping off was about her joining the males that had played the Dr stripping off as well.

Jijhebtseksmetezels · 18/07/2017 06:46

A man could rock up, be mediocre and all would be well

You either haven't read reviews or just ignoring what people have said about the male actors

Yes but when a man is mediocre it's because he's a bad actor. When a woman is mediocre it's because she's a woman.
