Not really AIBU - just want to hear your thoughts really.

I don't often watch it, but think it's nice that they've finally cast a woman as the Doctor :)

Well exactly Bear. So why do it? I bet there'll be lots of deliberate references to sex (not gender. This isn't a gender change).

Whenyouseeit · 16/07/2017 20:03

I'm just glad its someone I don't associate strongly with another role. I dont think I could have watched Kris Marshall.

I hope they keep Bill as a companion. An all female team would be a really unusual dynamic for sci fi.

Did you watch the last episode? Don't want to spoil it ....but

PerspicaciaTick · 16/07/2017 20:05

Yeah - the Bill thing isn't happening.

AlmaCogansFrockFan · 16/07/2017 20:06

Oh fairyfellers, did you not catch the Dr Who sketch on Children in Need some years back, when Jonathan Pryce appeared as the Master, the doctor went through several regenerations in a matter of minutes and appeared to die completely...then the Master in shock reverently declared that in honour of the Doctor he would become good, the Daleks all chorussed the same thing, then to everyone's surprised the Doctor's body stirred.....and regenerated into Joanna Lumley ! - who caught sight of the Master, they gazed at each other ...and fell in love...aaaahhh.

Riversleep · 16/07/2017 20:07

Afuna I know she is Mrs David Tennant and all that, but JW is a far better actor than Georgia Moffett. I thought Jenny was a terrible character. If ever there was a token casting, casting Peter Davisons daughter in an episode called ' The Doctors Daughter' was it. I would like to think they hired the best person for the job. I read that the new writer wanted a woman, so maybe they only auditioned women, but Id hope she was the best one.

Pariswhenitdrizzles · 16/07/2017 20:18

Christopher Eccleston was the first Doctor I 'grew up with', as it hadn't been on beforehand when I was growing up. He was absolutely brilliant.

Although Matt Smith and David Tennant both came close, from what I saw of them, I haven't really watched it since he was on so his Doctor will always be my fave 😍

It's a shape-shifting alien.

Missy has been spectacular.

The concept of the Doctor regenerating into a woman was first raised onscreen in 1980.

Technically two other actresses have already played the Doctor, just in spin-off material.

Doctor Who was created by a woman.

The Master once had the body of a snake (TV movie, more than 20 years ago). The Doctor once had a shapeshifter for a companion who took the form of a penguin.

TabascoToastie · 16/07/2017 21:00

Oh, and: the original premise of the show didn't involve regeneration at all.

The first regeneration was 1966 (from memory) it's been a massive premise of the show for almost all its entirety. It isn't a new thing.

DameDeDoubtance · 16/07/2017 21:05

I am thrilled, she's a cracking actor and I am looking forward to a new start. Maybe people should wait and see, instead of stropping because a female has been given a traditionally male job role.

cardibach · 16/07/2017 21:07

I will wait and see. Most posters have said they will. Doesn't mean we can't be sceptical about the whole idea.

scottishdiem · 16/07/2017 21:12

Different series but if you like Sci-Fi it has been done before.

taytopotato · 16/07/2017 21:17

Looking forward to the next series.

BeepBeepMOVE · 16/07/2017 21:21

Was hoping it would be someone better.

StickThatInYourPipe · 16/07/2017 21:23

Will she be a lesbian in this? As the Dr has only been in relationships with women, I would find it odd if they change the Dra sexuality and make the woman one attracted to men

TabascoToastie · 16/07/2017 21:23

Who has claimed regeneration is a new thing?? The concept of regeneration was created several years after the show started, and only as a way to get around Hartnell's fading health. It certainly was not part of the "original premise" of the show however you slice it.

Btw Andy Pryor gave a talk where he mentioned they'd had discussions about casting a woman in the role back in 2012.

StickThatInYourPipe · 16/07/2017 21:24

love interest I should aay

Pariswhenitdrizzles · 16/07/2017 21:26

Wow she's bloody good in Antigone 👍👍 - thanks for the link, tayto!

[peas] Missy wasn't the first female Time Lord (they've also been known as Time Ladies!) either, there's been quite a few. The Rani, Romana, The Inquisitor and River is part Time Lord I think

TabascoToastie · 16/07/2017 21:29

They've announced Pearl is leaving, but Bill is back for the Christmas Special so she's not gone-gone. It's not like her character died or something. Depending on what happens in the Christmas Special she could make future appearances.

Notknownatthisaddress · 16/07/2017 21:50

I love Jodie and think she will be great.

Really pissed off with the attitudes on twatter from some (Men mostly.) Why the fuck shouldn't Doctor Who be a woman? No reason why not. Doctor Who has no gender as he/she regenerates every few years into a different being.

'Can't believe it's a fucking woman!' they're blathering on twatter. I know right, I mean they will be wanting to be doctors and scientists and film directors next, those big titted bitches. Why don't they stay in the kitchen and make babies like they're meant to?! Hmm

Hmm

I wasn't a huge fan of Capaldi at all, and am glad he has gone tbh, as I thought he was a bit 'meh.'

James Bond being female is stupid though. The James Bond Character is a human male. Doctor Who is an alien.

So you cannot make that comparison.

TabascoToastie · 16/07/2017 21:53

Btw the co-creator of Doctor Who, Sydney Newman, wanted the Doctor to become female one day.

Interesting. Thanks @TabascoToastie. Smile

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 16/07/2017 21:59

Not fussed on her being female as long as it hasn't just been done to cause shock. Long as the writing is good no reason why it won't work out well. Be interesting to see.
