To hate the song "Shape of You"?

I mean, it's basically only talking about the woman's body and looks, but literally nothing else, yet it's inexplicably popular.

I just don't get it - why can't songs have a good message behind them?

Totally with you Maureen! What happens after 70? Argh! I actually wondered for a while if he was saying '17' and it was some kind of commentary on young relationships. I think I might have preferred that.

Me and my DD1 (2) love dancing around to a bit of upbeat Ed though!

runningyogabooze · 16/07/2017 20:02

I hate it too. And YUK re the bedsheets smelling. UGH

MelvinThePenguin · 16/07/2017 20:03

Eek. DD1 and I, not me and DD1. Don't know what came over me there!

DonaldStott · 16/07/2017 20:06

Grammy that is my take on that song too. Very judgey BUT lucky them, he still wants to be in their lives, in spite of their crappy mistakes.

What a guy!

BabychamSocialist · 16/07/2017 20:06

I do probably over-analyse songs. I am an English teacher...

Grammy78 · 16/07/2017 20:10

DonaldStott he should take out the 'But these people....' line and replace it with 'I hung out with Taylor Swift' and then 'And I can't wait to see them again' just to even it up a bit.

whatdoessheknow · 16/07/2017 20:12

The lyrics I can't stand are by the gormless-sounding one, James Arthur.

"I held your hair back
When you were throwing up"

Is that really the best he could come up with?

"I'll take the kids to school
Wave them goodbye"

Have a bloody medal!

There was a time when that song came on every time I got in the car and I've stopped listening to the radio since really.

Only1scoop · 16/07/2017 20:14

On that divide CD I choked at the track after Galway girl 'has his arse hole bleached' wasn't ready for that with dd 7Shock

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 16/07/2017 20:16

Those romantic James Arthur lyrics could almost be wedding vows.
"I do solemnly declare I'll hold your hair back when you're vomming in the toilet"

I think "love yourself" is about a girl who treats a man badly actually. A girl who the man loved and didn't see that she wasn't very nice at all, he didn't realise what she was like at first. The song is his anger when he finally saw her for who she was.

For all the times you made me feel small
I fell in love, now I feel nothin' at all
I never felt so low when I was vulnerable
Was I a fool to let you break down my walls

Roomba · 16/07/2017 20:24

DS2 loves it and sings it constantly, which drives me nuts as he is 4!

I feel really awful saying this, but this song was played in full at an 11 year old's funeral I attended recently. It was once of his favourite songs, so I see why it was chosen, but sitting through 5 minutes of it in front of a vicar in church seemed a bit bizarre given the lyrics!

Flywheel · 16/07/2017 20:26

Ed Sheeran - I so would. But then I did always have a thing for red heads

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 16/07/2017 20:31

I'm sure he doesn't have any trouble attracting women now, being Ed Sheeran.

Perfectly1mperfect · 16/07/2017 20:37

I think those of you that are slating him about his friends and women haven't watched interviews with him.

He always talks about having the same friends he's had since school and how close they all are. He talks about his respect for his parents and grandparents and his plans to live a quiet life with his wife and kids in years to come. He's never really done anything terribleand doesn't court fame. He has said he has struggled with people saying horrible things about him so he avoids social media etc. Reading the comments on here, how people decide that he's this or he's that or he's awful to women, I think he does the right thing staying away.

Buck3t · 16/07/2017 20:38

I can't think of an Ed song that I don't love. Go live yourself is the perfect song. And just because a man says something horrible to one woman doesn't make him a misogynist.

Barbafamiily · 16/07/2017 20:47

It is funny how this thread started as a criticism of him talking about women's bodies/ looks and then half the comments are negatively talking about his body/ looks. Ironic much? I don't think any of his lyrics are as mean about women as the comments here have been about him.

Polkadot1974 · 16/07/2017 20:47

He was the only thing I liked about Glastonbury and whilst I haven't got any of his stuff it isn't easy to be that catchy and hook so many people in. And berating his looks? Nice

supermoon100 · 16/07/2017 21:18

Yep there's some pretty body shaming stuff on here!

BabychamSocialist · 16/07/2017 21:23

Well I didn't body-shamed him! Tattoos aside, he's not bad looking actually...

BishopBrennansArse · 16/07/2017 21:25

I substitute you for poo as well.
"Now my bedsheets smell like 💩"
😜

skiploom · 16/07/2017 21:29

The first time I heard it, I thought it said 'I'm in love with a sheepdog' Confused

user1497435493 · 16/07/2017 21:43

I hate it too. Can't say why, but it is fucking vile.

Sallystyle · 16/07/2017 22:06

MN doesn't seem to like anyone or anything that is popular.

The vile comments about how he looks makes some of you bloody nasty hypocrites.

I like to sing his songs when I'm in the car and they come on the radio. I wouldn't sit and listen to him at home. Compared to most of the grim lyrics that get churned out these days Ed is positively tame.

'Love yourself' is about a woman who was an arsehole. Now even that is getting turned round into a reason why Ed must really hate women Grin

hudyerwheesht · 16/07/2017 22:10

Apparently I'm the only person who was thinking that the bedsheets were smelling of the girl's perfume. GrinNow I've got all these slightly gross alternatives.
But I had assumed everyone now sings "poo" instead.

StickThatInYourPipe · 16/07/2017 22:14

TheWoollybacksWife there is a dentist that sings shape of you but changes the lyrics please please please listen to it and show to you ds! (I don't think it's inappropriate but may want to listen to it first just in case)
