To hate the song "Shape of You"?

I mean, it's basically only talking about the woman's body and looks, but literally nothing else, yet it's inexplicably popular.

I just don't get it - why can't songs have a good message behind them?

Why do all the crap, misogynistic songs have catchy tunes?

The whole song's about picking up girls!

It actually started off as a song to be sang by a female singer about a man.

"We started it for Little Mix originally,” he revealed.

“Then it kind of halfway through, it sounded like it could be good for Rihanna.

“And then we were like, ‘this is actually pretty good, you should keep it’.”

Grin whirlycurly

OrgyofSausages · 16/07/2017 16:44

Im amazed anyone would go with Ed sheeran he's that ugly.

KurriKurri · 16/07/2017 16:45

The lyrics could be read more as a relationship that starts based purely on physical attraction and is now beginning to develop into something more. That's not necessarily misogynistic, just an account of attraction.

He could have written a song called 'I think you are ugly as all get out, but now we've chatted a bit you I quite like you, I don't want any sex though thanks'
That's another kind of relationship just waiting for a a song to encapsulate it.
But seriously -pop songs are ninety percent pure drivel, if you start to analyse them all you'd hate everything.

I don't mind Ed, he's better than Fat Les or the Smurfs.

user1490465531 · 16/07/2017 16:46

Ed sheere is my definition of everything unattractive in a man!

peachgreen · 16/07/2017 16:47

I don't understand the obsession with Ed Sheeran. You can hear someone as talented as Ed Sheeran at every open mic night in every bar in the country. And don't get me started on how utterly banal Galway Girl is.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 16/07/2017 16:48

There you go, women can be just as shallow about looks.

Sgtmajormummy · 16/07/2017 16:49

This is the only version I can listen to.

Zjmlove · 16/07/2017 16:50

Men like shapes of women. Can't see why a 20 something guy singing about that would annoy you.

On another note, I think ed sheeran is quite over rated. His songs are catchy but that's as far as it goes. I'm the only one of my friends not going to see him on his tour.

Blatherskite · 16/07/2017 16:51

After hearing the spoof version a few week ago, it's always "now my bed sheets smell like poo" in my head :)

Decaffstilltastesweird · 16/07/2017 16:53

I'm with purple. I'm sure he's a lovely man, but I can't abide his music. I especially dislike his lyrics. I accept I'm probably in the minority though as he's very popular.

randomer · 16/07/2017 16:54

Poor old turnip

MaureenDodd · 16/07/2017 16:54

When I were a nipper and times were tough, my mum drilled into me the phrase "quality over quantity" to make me understand that just because you have a lot of "something" doesn't necessarily mean you have the quality of that "thing"

Mum was talking about Barbies n shit.

Ed Sheeran. Listen to Mamma Dodd. She knows her stuff.

LookAtAllTheBullshit · 16/07/2017 16:54

But we've got Slow Hands (don't know the artist), 'it's like sweat dripping off my dirty laundry'.
You have laundry that drips with sweat-really!

LookAtAllTheBullshit · 16/07/2017 16:55

If they are the wrong lyrics then sorry, I am shit at picking them out.

notgivingin789 · 16/07/2017 16:58

YABU, I love the song !

But... the lyrics don't really hold any value meaning, which I was a bit disappointed at.

MaisieDotes · 16/07/2017 16:58

Oh I'm glad other people say "poo" as I can't hear the song without my very puerile mind inserting that automatically.

Mintychoc1 · 16/07/2017 16:59

I mainly hate the words in the Stormzy mix - "love you whatever, what you trying to skip a meal for". Then he says "there's not a flaw in your figure, I'm so impressed"

Mixed messages - eat lots and get fat because I love you anyway. Oh and by the way your figure is perfect, which it wouldn't be if you were bigger.

It reminds me of boyfriends I had in my youth who wanted me to eat kebabs and chips but stay skinny!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 16/07/2017 17:02

I dislike all Ed Sheeran's songs and find the lyrics quite foul. Galway Girl is irritating, slightly misogynistic and considering Ed's own surname, he couldn't have crammed any more Irish stereotypes in there. The rest of his songs glorify smoking weed and getting pissed, including the ones written for others (Rita Ora) which is getting very boring now. The ones he does about basically only liking a girl for her body make me want to vomit a little.

Also magnetism is far more complicated than that.

Luncharmstrong · 16/07/2017 17:06

Love the song.
Maybe the person he is singing to is fat or has a massive belly and huge feet , the shape is unspecified.

The singing dentist should be reported to the GDC and struck off .

Perfectly1mperfect · 16/07/2017 17:12

I love Ed Sheeran. I love his music, love that he does it all himself using a loop pedal with no band and, in as much as we can 'know' someone that we don't actually know, he always come across as a genuinely nice bloke in interviews.

I like Shape of You. He's said it not about any particular body shape but who cares really. Some songs are just simple.

I respect people saying they don't like his music but he really is talented if you actually look at what he does.

His lyrics can be quite personal I suppose but he seems to be very a very private person overall and definitly doesn't do it for the fame.

We seen him play Wembley, just him on the stage and he was amazing. I have seen loads of live acts but he was by far the best.

BabychamSocialist · 16/07/2017 17:25

I hate how every single song involves alcohol and a reference to him not going to uni. It's like "we get it Ed, you've sung about this for three albums!"

A lot of music seems to have a misogynistic tone to it these days but I was pleasantly surprised by Harry Styles' album. Very reminiscent of older music without the sexist vibes!

I'm in love with Rupert Grint's reading of the lyrics.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 16/07/2017 17:30

I get a mental image of a naked Ed lying on his bed with his guitar sniffing the sheets which is off putting.

I don't really have a problem with him appreciating the female form, the sheet sniffing is the only issue. Grin

AdalindSchade · 16/07/2017 17:35

Meh
It's a catchy tune, he has a lovely voice. I don't see it as about one night stands at all, it's about a new relationship just starting out. He also sings 'although my heart is falling too' - so it's not just about her body. DS loves it so I've heard it too much!
Galway girl is heinous though I'll give you that
