Re woman on bus and mobile phone

I was on a bus earlier. A young woman in her 20s was on her phone yacking away at top volume from the minute she got onto the bus; finishing one call and immediately calling someone else. This went on for about 20 minutes and eventually a middle aged woman sitting directly in front of her turned around and said 'Can you please just stop shouting into your phone and show some consideration. You're doing my head in'.

Younger woman looked a bit shocked but ended her call and we all got a bit of peace.

AIBU to wish I had the courage to do something similar. I am fed up of people around me gabbing away loudly into their phones on public transport, barely pausing to draw breath for the entire journey.

I agree with not caring what someone is doing on their phone, I honestly couldn't muster the energy to give a shit. It's only if it's impacting on other people that it bothers me.

I wonder if the man wasn't addressed because he's simply more intimidating compared to a young girl? Certainly doesn't make it acceptable though.

JacquesHammer · 11/07/2017 17:32

and please don't get me started on being literally glued to their phone screens. Its hardly life and death, its normally looking at Facebook and having to just reply THAT instant

I am a social media marketing consultant. When I am glued to my screen on public transport I am working. It's called multi-tasking

Onhold · 11/07/2017 17:33

The bus I get home from work is full of school kids. Peaceful it ain't.

houseinamess · 11/07/2017 17:34

I remember a train journey once which took 2 and a half hours. On the way there a man talked for the WHOLE journey about very personal issues on his phone, quite audible to the whole carriage. On the way back there was a woman having a heated argument with her boyfriend which got more and more angry and loud . It literally lasted the whole journey back . I just can't understand why people do that. Have they not heard of PRIVACY? Never mind the irritation it causes other passengers.

hazeydays14 · 11/07/2017 17:35

Do people actually expect others to sit in silence on the bus? I talk to whoever I'm travelling with (not strangers) and will sometimes talk about my personal life . I'll probably never see you again and I don't really care if people have their judgey pants on Grin

If I'm alone I will read some articles or go on mumsnet I don't see the issue with using my phone on the bus when I have nothing else to do. I've been known to sit with headphones in to avoid conversations with strangers weirdos

Maybe those bothered by people talking normally should invest in some headphones or something.. people shouting on phones is irritating but hardly the crime of the century

Onhold · 11/07/2017 17:37

What's wrong with being glued to your screen on the bus? I read books on my phone or read MN. It has no impact on anyone else at all.

MyheartbelongstoG · 11/07/2017 17:37

i'm going by your op, not reading all of the responses.

Eating on the bus is far worse imo.

user1485342611 · 11/07/2017 17:37

I don't think anyone on here objected to people 'talking normally'.

OP posts:
user1485342611 · 11/07/2017 17:38

Well maybe you should read the responses, as it appears what you find a 'misery' attitude, is actually a 'majority attitude'.

Why is it more miserable to find eating on the bus annoying than to find shouting into a phone annoying?

hazeydays14 · 11/07/2017 17:43

I hate people talking in general on public transport. from the first page

People also commenting on what others discuss on the bus - talking normally.

I think that's onbjevtipn to talking normally but maybe that's my interpretation of things.

Zaphodsotherhead · 11/07/2017 17:44

Aren't there cross purpose conversations going on here?

No one (I assume) has a problem with people sitting on their phones reading books, checking Facebook/Twitter, looking through photographs (ie, not chatting to 'randoms', but being busy). What they object to is listening to people making phone calls in public, because the noise and general entitledness of people conducting a shouted one-sided conversation to which other people are forced to listen, is annoying.

Onhold · 11/07/2017 17:44

I bet she wasn't even shouting into her phone. People always say that. I'm sure she wasn't doing her Dom Jolly impressions.'I'M ON THE BUS'.

schnubbins · 11/07/2017 17:44

I was just thinking this today on the underground.A woman sitting beside me was bellowing on her phone in russian.I had to move away after the conversation went on and on and on and on.I thought I would crack up .In general I think people nowadays speak far to loudly to each other in public on the phone or otherwise .They have no' inside' voices anymore.I live on a line which serves a major hospital and I don't know how many times I have been party to loud conversations from medical students who divulge far too much information about their experiences and cases that they have obviously experienced in the hospital. As a nurse I am outraged .They think they are cool though.Next time i shall say something.

gemsandstones · 11/07/2017 17:46

I bet she thought she was shouting too Grin #lackofSelfAwareness Hmm

MissBax · 11/07/2017 17:46

Ahhh yes I hate this!! People who speak loud enough that every one has to listen. There's nothing wrong with speaking quietly, but to impose noise onto others in a confined space is just selfish.

HurtleTheTurtle · 11/07/2017 17:46

Onhold I'm with you.

Onhold · 11/07/2017 17:47

I'd love that. I'd miss my stop listening to the gory details.

alisonyawn · 11/07/2017 17:49

People being overly loud is annoying yes, however, saying "EVERYONE IS JUST ON THEIR PHONES, GAWD YOU'VE CHECKED FACEBOOK A MILLION TIMES" is so stupid.

I hate public transport, and very rarely use the bus, however if I'm on it alone, or in the waiting room alone, I will use my phone how I damn well please. And if some miserable old bag told me to get off it, I'd tell her where to go Grin

MrsKoala · 11/07/2017 17:51

About 15 years ago I used to work with a woman who would keep a running list of people she needed to call - dr, dentist, plumber, brother about her cousins wedding etc. Then whenever we had to travel to a meeting (on public transport) she would pull out her list and start working her way down it. She saw it as good time management, but as her colleague i thought it was really rude and would cringe on the bus as she blathered on. It wasn't as common then and people would stare at us.

AHedgehogCanNeverBeBuggered · 11/07/2017 17:52

They have no' inside' voices anymore

^ this! It's really common for people on the phone to talk much more loudly than necessary - my mum does it, it drives me mental. I do frequently remind her not to shout but 2 minutes later she's at it again.

RiverTam · 11/07/2017 17:52

Well done that woman.

Nothing against people chatting on the bus but some most people don't seem to be able to have a mobile conversation at anything other than full volume.

Personally, I would never have a long conversation on public transport unless it was an abolsulte emergency.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 11/07/2017 17:54

Well done that woman - no need to describe her as middle-aged !

user1485342611 · 11/07/2017 17:55

You sound like a real pleasure Alison.

OP posts:
Awwlookatmybabyspider · 11/07/2017 17:56

Some people are just natural fog horns.

I actually think she was stupid to finish her conversation, because little miss speak your mind had told her to to. I'd have glared at her.

user1485342611 · 11/07/2017 17:57

I wondered if I'd be called out on that Dame. I started the post just saying the first woman, the second woman, but it sounded confusing so I described them in order to differentiate.
