Is my friend BU? She has suggested to the Radio Times that the BBC remake Pride and Prejudice with the gorgeous Aiden Turner as Mr Darcy

Very outing!

Her letter is on the Radio Times website, but I said I would post on here to see what everyone else thinks.

Personally, I could watch the wonderful Mr Turner watching paint dry, so I may be biased...

Is she being unreasonable to ask for something she wants? Of course not. Why would she be?

Somerville · 11/07/2017 15:04

I don't get the Mr Darcy adulation. Elizabeth shouldn't have married him.

The more Aidan Turner is on the TV the better, though.

CheeseOfHearts · 11/07/2017 15:05

I'd be perfectly happy just watching Aidan Turner do the lake scene on a loop. No need for the rest of it!

AdalindSchade · 11/07/2017 15:07

The BBC adaptation is a timeless classic but we could definitely stand to have another adaptation and mr Turner could make a very nice Darcy.
The film doesn't count because despite some excellent casting decisions Keira knightly and Mathew macfadden were shockingly wrong.

InigoTaran · 11/07/2017 15:08

YES YES YES!! Grin

Letitrain · 11/07/2017 15:10

No. Aiden Turner was an excellent vampire, a mediocre Poldark and would make a terrible Darcey.

Chesntoots · 11/07/2017 15:15

I am trying to convince her to watch the first couple of seasons of Being Human... He was superb in that.

I don't even care if this comes across as boasting and is completely irrelevant 😂😂, my husband is the spitting image (albeit utterly oblivious) of Aiden turner, we get followed around when out, and has been asked for his autograph and photos a few times ( husband utterly bemused and has no idea what is going on although I've showed him pictures and explained it). I've often wondered if he should do double work...he said no because he reckons it would always turn out to be porn 😂
I'll ask him to mock up the lake scene for me this weekend though 😝.....

Notreallyarsed · 11/07/2017 15:34

AidAn

AtlantaGinandTonic · 11/07/2017 15:34

Nope. Your friend is not BU at all. I would support that casting choice! Grin

FrostyPopThePenguinLord · 11/07/2017 15:37

😂 apologies for the spelling, im on bed rest flat on my back with my iPad, I have to type quickly before I drop it on my own face.

Notreallyarsed · 11/07/2017 16:49

FrostyPopThePenguinLord that made me chuckle, the lake recreation bit I mean Grin hope you feel better soon!
Just to explain, DS2 is an Aidan which is misspelled all the time, probably why I'm so pedantic about it 😂

JoshLymanJr · 11/07/2017 17:07

That would be terrible casting, which would totally misunderstand Mr Darcy as a character. Richard Armitage, maybe?

seagreengirl · 11/07/2017 17:13

I don't know if would like that actually. In my minds eye I always think of Elizabeth and Darcy as being more striking looking than conventionally good looking.

It is the other two, her sister and the friend that are the lookers!

WinifredAtwellsOtherPiano · 11/07/2017 17:16

Aidan Turner is only 5'10"
I've also never heard him do a full on posh English accent and seriously doubt that he can.

Darcy is a fully rounded character with very specific characteristics - just being good looking is not enough. See also, Idris Elba, Julian Rhind Tutt, Rufus Sewell.

MidLifeCrisis2017 · 11/07/2017 17:25

Josh OMG yes - Richard effectively played a northern Mr Darcy in North and South!

deadringer · 11/07/2017 17:26

I can't get enough Jane Austen usually but i think the BBC P&P was spot on and doesn't need updating. I love Aidan Turner but Darcy should be very tall, head and shoulders over everyone else really. Sorry frosty but we need photo evidence that you have bagged yourself an AT lookalike. Shirtless if possible, for erm, health and safety reasons. Yes health and safety. that sounds plausible

WinifredAtwellsOtherPiano · 11/07/2017 17:28

Richard Armitage is 45. Even the sainted Colin Firth was pushing it at 35.
Next!

WinifredAtwellsOtherPiano · 11/07/2017 17:37

You know what I really want to see, because it's pissed me off in all previous adaptations. Emma with a spectacularly gorgeous Barbie doll Harriet Smith. Doesn't matter who - there's probably five cast members from Hollyoaks who could do the job. Adaptations of Emma with slightly frumpy or dumpy Harriets are my pet peeve because .... did they even read the book?

humblesims · 11/07/2017 17:39

Hmm let me think about that one. Let me think about it a little bit more......Oh yes!

lidoshuffle · 11/07/2017 17:39

I thought the BBC version was almost perfect except for the pantomime dame of Mrs Bennet. Maybe Colin Firth was just a little too soft (in a nice way) and Elizabeth a smidgeon too old, but that's just quibbling really.

squoosh · 11/07/2017 17:40

this year some academics did some guesswork as to what they think Mr Darcy would have most likely looked like. [[http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/books/news/pride-and-prejudice-mr-darcy-real-looked-like-jane-austen-colin-firth-a7571416.html]]

’Their key findings discovered that Darcy wouldn't, in fact, be the dark-haired, square-jawed brooder he's often shown as in modern iterations; he would have worn the traditional powdered wig of the time, alongside possessing a pale complexion of white and pink skin. He also would have had a long oval face with a small mouth, pointy chin, and long nose alongside slender sloping shoulders and a modest chest, with large quads, thighs, and calves; all common features of a gentleman of that era. He also would have been around 5’11”, as opposed to Colin Firth’s 6’2” or Matthew MacFadyen's 6’3” in the 2005 film.’

So clearly the only actor who should play Mr Darcy is………………..Nicholas Lyndhurst.

Working link

ShelaghTurner · 11/07/2017 17:43

Not after the fuck up that's been made of Poldark Angry

Floralnomad · 11/07/2017 17:45

Why would anyone think it needed remaking , the one with Colin Firth etc , was and still is just perfect viewing . I don't get the fascination with remaking everything .
