However, can anyone honestly say that they wouldn't do the same in Charlie's parents position?
Yes, I can. I was in their position, and I did the exact opposite of everything they've done. As did all the other parents of terminally ill children I met on the ward and later in support groups.
It is incredibly rare that parents fight medical opinion like this. Children die of terminal illnesses everyday, but a big drawn out court case like this only happens once in a blue moon. What the Gard's are doing here isn't a 'normal reaction' or 'what parents do'. Every aspect of their behaviour is highly abnormal.
The vast, vast majority of parents see through their grief, accept the situation for what it is, and they then do everything they can to prevent further suffering. That's how it should be. As a parent who's been there, I fully believe that parents who can't manage this should be stripped of their parental rights, in a highly expedited manner. It absolutely horrifies me that a child is suffering pointlessly right now because two people living in a complete fantasy land have the power to draw out his death.
I wouldn't have been able to live with myself if I did to my late daughter what the Gard's have done to their son.
