in recognition of the fantastic work their staff do for very ill children. Please join me if you are able to do so.

I don't think anybody including GOSH should be above criticism or scrutiny. Things like that just lead to events like Mid Staffs where stifling of criticism as unfair against supposedly angelic caregivers mean concerns aren't raised.

As for Charlie's Army they're a flash in the pan social media craze who will have no long term impact on GOSH.

Want2bSupermum · 08/07/2017 16:57

DH and I donate to the hospice affiliated with alder hey in Liverpool. They support families while the child is going through treatment.

I never donate to UK hospitals directly. That is what taxes are for. I think if you donate it results in less government funding in the long run.

Stopnamechanging · 08/07/2017 16:59

Absolutely MargaretTwatyer, I have been a whistle blower in the NHS.

What exactly is the critical here of GOSH that you don't want suppressed?

Stopnamechanging · 08/07/2017 17:11

We had wifi installed for all patients in our local trust, after fundraising, also TVs for the teenagers medical unit.

I really don't think that the government would ever have provided those from taxes.

It makes such a difference if you are in there long term.

StrangeLookingParasite · 08/07/2017 17:54

Criticising a poster who had the best of intentions and accusing her of showing off? Are some of you that angry about life and jealous of other people?

Oh this. I've always thought those who complain incessantly about 'stealth boasting' and can't ever see the silver lining for the cloud have poor miserable lives.

And wombling3 your comments about 'rich birches in London' says a lot about the enormous chip on your shoulder.

Ceto · 08/07/2017 18:17

Many of us donate regularly to a charity or cause. We just don't start a thread in AIBU to announce it.

washing, have you really not worked out that this is related to the unmerited criticism GOSH have been receiving lately and is obviously motivated by a wish to demonstrate moral support for them?

applesareredandgreen · 08/07/2017 20:31

YANBU to donate what you can afford

yANBU to encourage others to donate what they can afford, if anything

YABVU to boast about your donation and to assume that others have £50 available

Chestervase1 · 08/07/2017 22:34

I wonder how much money is held on deposit by children's hospitals and charities. Just wondering ....

Anotheroneofthese · 09/07/2017 00:04

Wombling, why exactly is my statement horrible, when taken in context? For some people £50 is a week's wage and for others it isn't. Assuming the £50 was legally acquired, what exactly is the problem with my statement? Should the OP be apologetic for earning more than £50 and spending it how she wishes?

Some people are more successful than others and can afford to donate more. Some people may choose to be open and transparent about their donations.

So what if some people earn more than others? So what if for some people £50 is their wage for the week? That person could be working 1 day per week (certainly not a full week because there is a minimum wage in place which would mean much more than £50 per week)

Ceto · 09/07/2017 08:23

apples, yet again, it's pretty clear OP isn't boasting about her donation. She essentially wants to draw attention to the fact that there is a way of supporting GOSH at a time when their work is being made ridiculously difficult by a load of idiots.

brexitstolemyfuture · 09/07/2017 08:27

I can't stand people that gloat about how much they gave to charity.

The best people are the ones that just do it and don't scream and shout about it.

BabsGanoush · 09/07/2017 08:51

Every time you turn round a shop or someone is collecting for GOSH. What about everyone else??? That's why I am very choosy about who I donate to. I only donate to my local charities and causes, and then only to those who I support. I never give to the big TV campaigns for example.

But everyone is different and no one can be criticised for what they do or don't.

Context. Context is very important. In this case especially.

Vanillamanilla1 · 09/07/2017 10:47

On the back of this post im foregoing a cut and blow dry tomorrow and donating the £100.00 I would have spent on a hairdo ..
It can wait another few weeks
Ive also sent an email as they do a fantastic job and sometimes I think they're undervalued

I can't stand posters who gloat over national tragedies like bombings and do a bit of virtue signalling on the back of it but hey ho, at least someone giving money to charity is actually doing something.

Stopnamechanging · 09/07/2017 11:17

Yes I advance searched the hypocrite.

Stopnamechanging · 09/07/2017 11:21

Do people bother reading links? Over half of the children treated there are from outside of London and come from as far away from Scotland and wales, it might well be your 'local' children treated there.

Donate or not but the justifications and abuse at the op are not fair.

flatbreads · 09/07/2017 11:24

Of course it is all context and at the moment GOSH are getting it from all angles.

Well done OP and no I don't think you were bragging merely encouraging others to donate which I think is a very good idea.

In a perfect world taxes would pay for everything but of course in the real world they can't possibly and yes it is wonderful to be able to help in the provision of accommodation for families, nicer environment for patients etc by donating no matter how little or how much.

SunnySkiesSleepsintheMorning · 10/07/2017 13:18

GOSH is a tertiary centre for many complex conditions, so it is a bit more than just one hospital. People should think or educate themselves before they speak.

OP, I don't think you were bragging. You were making a statement and I'm glad you did.
