ElinoristhenewEnid which national charity lost out directly as a result of GOSH and how do you know that?

If you support it and it's nothing to do with anything that the NHS does (as you don't support anything that the taxpayer should pay for), I can't see that it could be anything in the same field?

ElinoristhenewEnid · 08/07/2017 11:52

It was a children's charity supporting children from broken homes, life changing illnesses etc.
People / organisations who chose that charity on previous years went for the nice shiny gosh appeal

Argeles · 08/07/2017 11:58

GOSH do amazing work, but I cannot bring myself to donate to them at the moment, in light of the disgusting handling of the Charlie Gard case.

Stopnamechanging · 08/07/2017 12:01

That's quite emotive language to use 'shiny' etc.

I have posted a screenshot of where the money goes, at least 25% goes to supporting families with long term illness (the same as your national charity).

Some would argue that is the same thing that tax payers should pay for.

Unless you are willing to name the charity, i can't really research or dispute what you are saying.

Lots of us donate to many causes, I support GOSH amongst others as we had a very supportive experience with a child who died there.

Vitriol towards any charity is bizarre in my opinion.

Donate or don't, as you can see from some of the replies focussing on user names, some of the arguments are not from people that I would assume to be altruistic anyway.

Welcome to mumsnet Argeles

Gosh need all the support they can get just now

Chestervase1 · 08/07/2017 13:08

The large GOSH children's hospital in Hackney road had been unused and unoccupied for the past 25+ years. It has now been developed into flats. I dont understand why GOSH we're appealing for funds to replace hospital buildings whilst leaving this large block of expensive real eastate derelict for so many years.

2015/16 saw the Trust report an underlying deficit for the first time in several years. In 2016/17 national intervention to reverse the deterioration in the nances of provider trusts may provide some relief. However, the nancial risks facing GOSH will continue unabated from 2017/18.

The Hackney hospital was never part of GOSH. It was originally formed from the merger of the Queen's Hospital for Children in Bethnal Green and the Princess Elizabeth of York Hospital for Children, Shadwell. It became part of The Royal Hospitals NHS Trust, in the 1990s, which in turn became the Barts and The London NHS Trust. In 1998 the services carried out by the hospital were moved to within The Royal London Hospital.

Chestervase1 · 08/07/2017 13:22

It says Gt Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children on the sign

Ceto · 08/07/2017 13:23

Oh dear, the usual desperation to sling mud from some of the usual suspects here. Did anyone who is even vaguely aware of the news not work out that OP's post directly related to the current pressure GOSH is under from the madness that is Charlie's Army and others of similar mind? It's not so much a matter of financial help as showing solidarity and support.

Ceto · 08/07/2017 13:25

Hospital are insured for legal fees

Not for the Gard type of case.

Stopnamechanging · 08/07/2017 13:28

It's not true that they are no different to your local children's hospital either Confused.

My dd2 was referred on from our district hospital, I was also next door in the London Neuro one summer after being referred on from our local hospital.

Nearly half of it's patients are from outside London.

The Queen Elizabeth hospital in Hackney and Gt Ormond Street were linked between 1968 and 1994: "This arrangement lasted until 1968 when the Queen Elizabeth was detached from Hackney and placed under the Board of Governors of the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street. The hospital functioned as part of the Hospitals for Sick Children until 1994 when Great Ormond Street became an NHS Trust."

Chestervase1 · 08/07/2017 13:37

Sorry Ceto but you are wrong the Hackney Road hospital was indeed part of GOSH

Stopnamechanging · 08/07/2017 13:38

GOSH have an appalling record for treating and harming children with ME/CFS (now at UCL). Unfortunately its high profile image as the best children's hospital in the UK means that parents put more faith and trust into GOSH than they would their local hospital. So I do think parents need to actually think about what they're doing when they put GOSH on a pedestal and think it's just about what they see in the media with Captain Jack visiting sick children

At the end of the day it is just an NHS hospital that does the same good and bad work as all children's hospitals do around the country. So whilst I applaud the sentiment of supporting a children's hospital, think about the repercussions of elevating a hospital to god-like status without evaluating what that means to everyone being treated there

GOSH is part of UCL

Yes, it was linked until 23 years ago.

Morecoffeeurgently · 08/07/2017 13:46

I can't afford to donate at the moment but I sent a message of support via facebook to them the other day. Got a lovely reply and an assurance that the message would be passed on to the staff involved.

MycatsaPirate · 08/07/2017 14:32

oh FFS!

The op has made a donation of £50 to GOSH. I think that's commendable and I will certainly be making a donation in a month or two when I am a bit more financially better off.

And yet there are people on here calling the op for bragging? Really? Try going on a 'where are you going on holiday?' thread. Read all the posts from people who are spending £10k on a holiday (or three) and the nasty comments about how hard they work for their money and if you say different then you are just jealous.

I fucking hate MN sometimes. Some of you are just downright bloody nasty.

Well done Op. Ignore the dickheads.

Ceto · 08/07/2017 15:49

No, Chestervase, they were linked for a time. At the point when Hackney Hospital closed down it was nothing to do with GOSH so subsequent decisions about the building equally were nothing to do with them.

WoofWoofMooWoof · 08/07/2017 16:08

My DD2s life was saved at GOSH when she was a newborn (heart surgery). I got to stay for free there for three days before she got transferred back to her hospital. The staff was lovely and I don't have a bad word to say. Regardless of what's happening now, I had a positive experience of them.

I have been donating £5/month (all I can afford), every month for almost 9 years now, and will keep doing so.

washinggotdarkedon · 08/07/2017 16:31

Many of us donate regularly to a charity or cause. We just don't start a thread in AIBU to announce it.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 08/07/2017 16:37

Well, I'm staying out of the argument but this thread appearing in active just reminded me to donate to them, so I did.
