.... to demand a serious cull? Mugs are trying to take over my kitchen (pic attached)

But apparently every one of them is 'precious' and needs to stay according to DH and DSs (they are ganging up on me).
Most are mismatched, some are freebies, many are chipped and faded from having been in the dishwasher 2 million times.

Help me!!

My DP has mentally paired our mugs. So if I have the orange one he must have the red one for example. I am not supposed to drink from the red one as that is not how the pair works. He has never fully explained the pairs to me but still gets mildly annoyed if I take a mug out of order Grin
Thankfully we only keep 8 mugs in the cupboard

dudsville · 08/07/2017 08:46

Devuskums made me la ugh over the concept of dead mug space.

I have a mug shelf. I mentioned to oh that I was going to do a cull. He said no. I waited ams he forgot. I then took several out that I knew were safe to dispose of, and stacked some others in the back of the cupboard. Those won't get used ane next year I can easily discard them without him realising. I'm playing the long game.

"What prompted my post today is that I want to buy some GOSH mugs. But there is no room in the mug drawer."

Ah! So you are part of the problem.

SabineUndine · 08/07/2017 10:28

Take some into work. I lose about 3 mugs a year that way.

I only have 14 at home (I live on my own) now.

ijustwannadance · 08/07/2017 10:38

Just bin them yourself, please don't dump crap, old, stained, mis-matched mugs on charity shops.

Newbie557774 · 08/07/2017 10:47

When I was working, I had my morning cuppa in a Sports Direct mug. I needed that quantity of tea to get me out of the house, and it saved putting on the kettle twice. One Yorkshire teabag in it was just the right strength

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 08/07/2017 10:47

Maybe not charity shops, but food banks might have them. I'm imagining people who need mugs but don't have the money - chipped might not be ideal, but it serves the purpose for a short period.

I also have that "can't drink tea from a mug that has 'coffee' written on it" thing, so have to take that into account with my totally mismatched mug collection. Each one is for a specific time of day / drink.

Theweasleytwins · 08/07/2017 10:53

Li have about 5 hello kitty mugs from Easter eggs😁

I brought a new mug yesterday, it's actually a soup mug but I like a lot of coffee

Bluerose27 · 08/07/2017 10:54

Oh god that's way too many mugs!! I feel tense looking at them! Bring one with you every so often when you go out and bin it in town/ at the supermarket. So it can't be retrieved!

PenguinBollard · 08/07/2017 11:10

I have the wonderful advantage of being single and child free, thus my cupboard is only stocked with the Denby Halo range of dinnerware #smug

Though the rest of my life is chaos and the moment I couple up I'm sure this will change...

I'm just amazed how I got to post #88 on this thread before realising that you have a mug drawer. I assumed the picture was all of them laid out on the kitchen table and shot from above. The mug drawer changes everything....,

Mind. Blown.

HamletsSister · 08/07/2017 11:59

What you need is what I call the "half chuck".

Move some of the mugs into a box in a cupboards. When questioned, they are away in the cupboard. Repeat. Wait a while. Get rid.

Any specific mugs can be secretly returned if asked for.

Never fails.

Cyclebird · 08/07/2017 12:16

I'm impressed with your mug drawer OP - ours looked like that a few months ago but now we're double layering. Nightmare!!

We need a cull too.

My mugs are taking over the world! (well, my kitchen)

notsmartenough · 08/07/2017 12:31

I have 23, just for me.
I do throw away any that get chipped but I'm a sucker for anything cat or book related.

DisorderedAllsorts · 08/07/2017 12:32

I thought I had loads but you've got way more than me. Do the disposal of the obviously damaged and chipped ones first. Then leave it a week or two then get rid of a few more.

I've donated a few to work. We had some manky ones at work so I binned those and took some extras in from home. I took some to a charity shop & gave the badly chipped ones to my neighbour for her garden.

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 08/07/2017 12:33

I need a mug drawer. I don't use the ones at the back of the cupboard as that's where the spiders live!! 😱

OctopusesGarden · 08/07/2017 12:42

What is a sports direct mug and how come so many have them? (I don't live in the UK).

Also suspicious of a mug drawer. Mugs should be kept in the top cupboard bottom shelf just beyond my tippy toe reach except for the few at the front. Who knows how many are lurking at the back?

Davros · 08/07/2017 13:02

Smash some up and put the bits in the top of pot plants to stop cats shitting in them or take up mosaicing

bridgetreilly · 08/07/2017 13:24

Take out all the chipped and faded ones, put them in a box and take them to the tip.

Sort out all the ugly precious mugs and put them at the back of a cupboard.

Take the rest and hang them conveniently on a mug tree near the kettle.

bridgetreilly · 08/07/2017 13:28

Oops, should have been strikeout not bold!

MrsMozart · 08/07/2017 14:22

Our mugs have names... there's no hope Grin

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/07/2017 15:05

Definitely octopus - cupboard above the kettle. Bottom shelf. Anything else is just witchcraft.....
