.... to demand a serious cull? Mugs are trying to take over my kitchen (pic attached)

But apparently every one of them is 'precious' and needs to stay according to DH and DSs (they are ganging up on me).
Most are mismatched, some are freebies, many are chipped and faded from having been in the dishwasher 2 million times.

Help me!!

When we moved house dd wanted some matching mugs like her friends family had.I and ndulged her,Then we unpacked boxesHmmThere are only 2 of us and 17 mugs and that's after I threw out chipped ones. The trouble is I like tea, coffee and soup on different mugs,dd is the same about her milk, hot chocolate and green tea. Also visitors cannot use our personal mugs.Sound ridiculous written down.

Nikephorus · 07/07/2017 16:01

Break them and then put the shards (that's what's left when you use a hammer) at the bottom of the bin, preferably under something wet and disgusting. If the mug reappears after all that then it probably merits a place in the kitchen.

WomblingThree · 07/07/2017 16:01

I don't understand mugs. Any occasion for a present - a bloody mug will turn up. Easter eggs in mugs. Souvenir mugs. Freebie mugs. How many bloody mugs does one sodding house need?

We have a dishwasher and two people who drink hot drinks. Four mugs for us plus a couple for when parents come is plenty as far as I'm concerned. So why does my mug cupboard look like the OPs??

Don't even get me started on glasses!

HellonHeels · 07/07/2017 16:03

Sports Direct mugs must be binned, they are horrendous!

Anything chipped should be thrown out because Health and Safety (germs, cut lip etc)

I like the idea of everyone choosing three to keep.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 07/07/2017 16:06

OP - you sound like my husband. He gets mug rage.

CaptainHammer · 07/07/2017 16:07

It's bothering me that they are in a drawer and not a cupboard. Doesn't it take longer to find the specific one you want?!

AppleAndBlackberry · 07/07/2017 16:08

I've got a pretty big mug collection, comes in handy for parties or when family visit and like a cup of tea every hour but I don't keep chipped or cracked ones. I also used a few scratched ones to mix polyfiller in recently and then binned them.

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 07/07/2017 16:09

I'd bag up all but 12 and take them straight to the charity shop.

StormTreader · 07/07/2017 16:10

Just dont buy your new GOSH mugs, problem solved!

DoneInn · 07/07/2017 16:14

Everyone needs two mugs, three if your dishwasher is slacking. Tell them all the rest have been put in the loft. Then take to charity shop.

Ellie56 · 07/07/2017 16:14

Mugs with chips or cracks are unhygienic and should be binned. Wrap them in newspaper or plastic bags and stuff at the bottom of the bin.

And Sports Direct mugs are hideous. Think you should drop one of them OP. DH can only drink out of one mug at a time.

PacificDogwod · 07/07/2017 16:14

No, I don't buy mugs normally.

I just went through them: bar 5 (1 casualty a long while ago) matching ones, they are ALL gifts, freebies or leftover ones from kids' crockery sets Hmm

I suppose they are a symptom of how our house is whatever the opposite of minimalist is Hmm

If they are precious, tell your child to learn mosaic and build himself a mosaic hope chest to hold the ones he wants and he can take them when he moves out.

Or make a mosaic garden wall, sundial, or other monstrosity ornamentation for your property.

Like Gaudi's park benches in Barcelona, only with 'I Love Blackpool' mugs.

PacificDogwod · 07/07/2017 16:15

This is a perfect mug Grin

I recently on a MN mug btw...

Full them with soil and seeds and pop them in the garden!

MikeUniformMike · 07/07/2017 16:21

Cracked ones could be used as pencil pots. chipped ones - bin 'em. Ones you don't like but are OK - charity shop.
I used a pile of matching spare ones as plant holders on kitchen windowsill.

PickAChew · 07/07/2017 16:27

Broken ones go, now! Or under cover of the night, preferably to a neighbour's wheelie bin!

Keep a nice set for visitors and a couple of older ones for taking in the garden, giving to the plumber etc and then everyone chooses 2 that they really like. If they want to keep any more, they have to stay in their room and be rotated out - one in one out.

We're decluttering so we can put the house on the market. I found 2 boxes of mugs, this morning. One put away because they were pretty but impractical. The other because there simply wasn't enough room for them when we had to sacrifice a couple of cupboards to make way for a new boiler. I've marked up the first lot to donate to the charity shop.

drummergirl34 · 07/07/2017 16:28

sell them on ebay!

PickAChew · 07/07/2017 16:28

And yes, if they're getting claimed back, properly smash the chipped ones, when you dispose of them.

BewareTheUndertoad · 07/07/2017 16:29

I have 3 cardboard boxes of mugs that have been used over the years and packed away either to move house or make space in the cupboard. I also have a storage box on top of the cupboard, full of mugs that have recently been packed away to make space.

In use are 12 IKEA ones because they make good tea and stack, 8 bigger stacking mugs, 6 mugs that fit in the holder in the car, 2 big mugs that are too big to use, and a set of Villeroy & Boch mugs which are out of reach due to the difficulty in replacing them as they are discontinued. Also have some for workmen to use outside.

Odd mugs are not allowed, they get given away or packed away depending on whether I like them.

I admit that I used to collect them. Broken ones are used in plant pots or kept for the mosaic that might get made one day.

I gave a lot to a lady on Freecycle who had pretty much nothing to her name. They were odd and mismatched, she didn't mind.

Is there a Greek restaurant nearby? They love throwing the pottery around on a Friday night... or is there a birthday communing up? How about a Greek Mug theme?

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 07/07/2017 16:35

I love sports direct mugs Blush

We have four of them...

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 07/07/2017 16:36

PickAChew · 07/07/2017 16:42

This is my nice set for visitors. I like drinking water out of them - it tastes nicer than other mugs

I have some assorted le Creuset mugs, picked up in TK Maxx, rather than full price! DH likes drinking tea and coffee out of them.

I have a couple of ancient whittards ones - 400ml, they are. Perfect for my chamomile tea and morning bucket of proper coffee.

DS1 has about half a dozen of the things. He only uses them to drink water. His favourite is an old Staffordshire Potteries "Busways" mug, complete with 091 phone number on it, that he picked up at a transport rally.

And I have some of the Denby bowl like mugs, which are perfect for soup and hot chocolate.
