.... to demand a serious cull? Mugs are trying to take over my kitchen (pic attached)

But apparently every one of them is 'precious' and needs to stay according to DH and DSs (they are ganging up on me).
Most are mismatched, some are freebies, many are chipped and faded from having been in the dishwasher 2 million times.

Help me!!

It's amazing how mugs multiply; I've recently cleared out our mug shelf but we still have about 8 for two of us which seems excessive.

Downgrade any chipped or cracked ones that are special to pen pots/plant pots etc.

Charity shop the rest barring 2-3 each (get them to pick favourites).

Drinking out of chipped mugs is grim.

MyOtherNameIsTaken · 07/07/2017 17:03

We chucked our matching mugs as it was feeling a bit twee (Harold and Hilda) Grin and bought mugs that don't match at all now. We've got an eclectic collection of 6. Plus the Christmas mugs.

MyOtherNameIsTaken · 07/07/2017 17:04

If 6 is a collection, that is.

RippleEffects · 07/07/2017 17:10

Do you have a shed or garage? If so buy loads of cheap cup hooks screw them into a wall of edge of a shelf and use them as screw, raw plug, bolt, washer, nail, tack holders.

Buy beautiful coordinating ones for the house (but with very slight variations so you can tell which drink is which).

AcrossthePond55 · 07/07/2017 17:12

Why can't mugs disappear in the dishwasher the way socks do in the washing machine and can we get away with saying they do?

caoraich · 07/07/2017 17:47

Ohhh we have this problem too. Reading with interest. The mug cupboard is full and they're stacked three high. In addition to many gifts that are too precious to bin, most recently we got excited when Tim Hortons opened nearby and bought two giant Tim's mugs Hmm

We have only ourselves to blame

Is there not a book about how to effectively throw things out?

starfishmummy · 07/07/2017 17:54

I have to correct a pp about tiled floors.
Things you deliberately hurl at tiled floors to try to break them do bounce. Amhik!!

ForalltheSaints · 07/07/2017 17:56

A cull could be putting them in the attic?

MimsyFluff · 07/07/2017 17:59

Send them to them to me! Only messing I bin cups that have chips straight away incase they have a hairline crack I can't see then break and you end up with boiling hot drink burning your skin!

I have odd cups and a few IKEA stacking ones for when the kids have million friends over! We throw about one out a month because they get a chip or crack in but I pick up ones I like when I see them.

I love mugs and have set ones for set drinks Smile

Send them to the charity shop and I'll go and buy them.

My kids all get me mugs as gifts so those ones are ornamental.

OhBigHairyBollocks · 07/07/2017 20:53

If you can, donate them to your local homeless shelter/ temporary hostel. We're always in need of mugs!!! Especially for people who come in with nothing Sad

bimbobaggins · 07/07/2017 20:58

I love the idea of disposing of one a week. Definitely do this!

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 07/07/2017 21:07

I am not in the least bit posh but there is no room in my life for cheap mugs, my sports direct ones went straight in the recycling!

My side of the mug cupboard is full of Dunoon mugs in different shapes and patterns, dh has Emma Bridgewater personalized mugs and the guests we never have use the Pantone colour chart mugs. I am a mug snobBlush

BlackeyedSusan · 07/07/2017 21:13

find the oldest, least loved lip splitting mug..and let it meet a nasty irretrievable accident

Cailleach666 · 07/07/2017 22:22

Gruesome.

I hate clutter.

All crockery is plain white Ikea. Easy to replace and everything matches.
Any mugs given as gifts tend to get "lost".

mathanxiety · 08/07/2017 04:04

I have quite a few mugs myself. To be fair, about half a dozen of them belong to DDs 2 and 3 who are home from university, but still - maybe it's time for a count...

I have three lovely light aqua-coloured mugs that are My Morning Tea Mugs and woe betide anyone I find making brownies in them in the microwave.

timeforabrewnow · 08/07/2017 05:58

I've just googled Creuset mugs - a set of six (rainbow colours mind) will cost you £83.

Shock
thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/07/2017 06:44

Easy- get a big box, put all offending articles inside. Go to somewhere cheap and cheerful and buy 8 lovely, pretty, kitchen-matching mugs. (Mine came from asda, tesco also good) and put them in the cupboard.

Give kids their very special mug as pen pot or similar, use another as kitchen pen pot. Dh may also want pen pot/junk pot for office or shed? Maybe plant a little cactus in the really grottiest but most loved?

Honestly, once they see your beautiful row of gleaming matching mugs they will want to use them. Often the fear of change is greater than the change itself.

MsPassepartout · 08/07/2017 08:11

They can't all be precious.

Sounds like a good first step would be to take a hard line on chipped mugs. If they insist on chipped mugs being kept, can you relegate them to pen holders or similar?

The suggestion to get everyone to pick a few favourites and ditch the rest is good.

Failing that, how about marking every mug - in a way that will easily be washed off when a mug is used - and after a week or two, remove the mugs still marked on the grounds that no one's using them?

MargotLovedTom1 · 08/07/2017 08:20

I love mugs; DH rolls his eyes when another new one appears and mutters about implementing a UKIP style one-in, one-out policy.

I'm surprised no one has said that photo sets off their trypowhatsit, holey phobia thing Grin.

devuskums · 08/07/2017 08:24

Although I myself have only 7 mugs to my name, my mum is constantly complaining about the mug multiplying phenomenon...
My opinion is that if all the mugs fit into the mug drawer, culling some is pointless as the space you save would be just dead 'mug space'....unless you are planning on going all fruity with a mixed drawer ... ooooh maybe mugs and glasses?!

Pigface1 · 08/07/2017 08:31

Sports Direct mugs are a pox on the face of the earth. If your DH loves them I really think you have no choice but to LTB, sorry.

DoubleCarrick · 08/07/2017 08:36

Ooh you've inspired me to have a cull!! We have all white mugs with various patterns/pictures on. So matching but not matching. Several have chips but dh is sentimental about them which is weird as he bins everything including the watering can!!
They're starting to move from their own cupboard and are now taking over the plate cupboard. It's like an invasion!
