Is £50 a month reasonable for gym membership?

Got an appointment with David Lloyd tomorrow. Aparranyky it's £50 a month for the basic package (£65 a month for the full package including tennis).

Is this pricey or reasonable? For this they have personal trainers, swimming, sauna and guest passes. DH says I can go but I feel guilty! I want to get in shape for my holiday in November (and beyond obviously) but I'm too self conscious to run outside and can't be arsed with home fitness dvds etc as the motivation is just not there if it's just me on my own in the living room

Depends on what you want from a gym DL isn't that nice and not enough equipment. Plenty of cardio machines though. Found members snobby or not using equipment properly (dangerous) the PTs never corrected them. Kids running riot parents not watching them.
Only nice thing was the heated outdoor pool. But the time were restricted in the winter months which unfortunately wasn't open at the times I could attend.

I pay £15 for my gym!

That is literally just for the gym though, no pool/classes etc. Works for me though as I hate cardio, I just use the weights room and I'm pretty self motivated so I don't want a trainer.

I pay £16.99 pm - if you want to go to the gym, you just will. You don't need fluffy towels to make you go.

It depends what you want. If you want the luxuries, which is DL et al, the price you report is pretty much as you would expect.

I've been a member of many gyms, both luxury and budget.

If all you want is machines, changing room, shower, classes, 24 hour access across multiple sites - Pure Gym, The Gym, all of these are the best price wise as you are looking at 15 odd quid a month. And you aren't in a contract.

I prefer usury gyms, but am a member of PG because of the benefits of multi site access, and the fact I can live without sauna, steam room etc. Another issue for me is being tied into a contract, and they often have restrictive opening hours.

Sadly you find 'cliques' in any gym (some people think luxury gyms are worse for that).

It really depends on what you want.

But for me - the ultimate decision maker is down to location. If I had a DL next to me, I'd join up straight away, as I crave convenience due to working commitments. It HAS to be easy to get to. Another reason I'm in PG.

I'm part of lots of cliques at my gym
it makes me laugh

I pay £30 for Pure Gym, but I can go to every branch outside of central London. I travel a lot and it's the most common chain. I also belong to The Gym Group at a similar price but I freeze that membership for £5 a month and only unfreeze it if I spend a week somewhere with only The Gym.

I pay £5 per visit to a local bodybuilding gym. I probably go often enough to justify a membership.

If I want to swim I go to the local council leisure centre. The gym is good enough for upper body exercise so a day pass of swimming and gym is £7. I probably do that 5 times a month. Again, that would justify a membership. But I think my husband would be annoyed. I'd rather pay for individual visits out of my pocket money.

Often I travel to towns with neither a Pure Gym nor a The Gym and I have to Google gyms in the area and pay per visit. Rarely is there a hotel gym good enough for my needs but I sometimes stay in a Village hotel and they're awesome.

I never take classes. I almost never use the cardio machines. My priority is the weight room. Benches, squat racks, deadlift platform and Olympic plates matter. I also love a fun "conditioning area" with sandbags, tyres, etc.

Rhayader · 07/07/2017 19:45

Massively depends where you are. Virgin active in central London can set you back 150-200 a month.

if it's nice then yes. i was a member of a lovely gym for about 60£. worth it to me to be in a nice, clean environment.
