Is £50 a month reasonable for gym membership?

OverTheHammer · 07/07/2017 14:00

Got an appointment with David Lloyd tomorrow. Aparranyky it's £50 a month for the basic package (£65 a month for the full package including tennis).

Is this pricey or reasonable? For this they have personal trainers, swimming, sauna and guest passes. DH says I can go but I feel guilty! I want to get in shape for my holiday in November (and beyond obviously) but I'm too self conscious to run outside and can't be arsed with home fitness dvds etc as the motivation is just not there if it's just me on my own in the living room

Sounds about right. I pay £42 for a leisure centre gym membership which includes classes. I know Virgin gyms are around £50 a month.

Mumofazoo · 07/07/2017 14:02

I think that's pretty pricey. I pay £15 a month for membership at a decent gym. Don't have personal training though as my dh is one.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 07/07/2017 14:03

I think that's exceptionally expensive. DH paid £89 for the year, and that includes all the gym equipment plus swimming facilities, sauna, hot tub etc.

skinnyamericano · 07/07/2017 14:04

Sounds pretty reasonable. Our local
Leisure centre is around £30, but David Lloyd was getting on for £80 a few years back (not inc tennis). Just watch out for their persistent price rises!

HunterHearstHelmsley · 07/07/2017 14:05

That's about right for a 'nice' gym. I pay about that and use it daily so it's worth it. It really does depend on if you'll use it and how often

ChopinLisztFinder · 07/07/2017 14:06

I've paid more and I've paid less.

The most important decision with a gym is picking one that you will actually go to. There's no point in paying less for a gym that doesn't inspire you to go. If this gym makes you want to attend (plus is in an easy to reschedule location), it's worth it.

skinnyamericano · 07/07/2017 14:06

You won't get PT included in that price though - that would be at least £30/hour extra. Classes will be included, which are v good.

joannegrady90 · 07/07/2017 14:06

Wow that's pricey.

Mines £10 a month for unlimited use including all classes.

LockedOutOfMN · 07/07/2017 14:06

I think it's a good price as it includes swimming. Think about what you will use and how often. But to me it sounds pretty good value as long as you're going at least twice a week.

Enjoy!

KoalaDownUnder · 07/07/2017 14:07

That's a bit less than the gym I used to be a member of. Similar thing: spa, sauna, all classes included, indoor and rooftop pools, cafe/restaurant. Tennis was extra (but I can't play anyway).

Tbh, it was worth every cent and I'll be rejoining when I can afford it. It made me really want to go as it was such a treat to do a class then relax in the jacuzzi or sauna afterwards.

I'd do it!

David Lloyd is one of the high end gyms, to be honest you're just paying for nicer surroundings and newer machines... however that is a good price for a David Lloyd.

KoalaDownUnder · 07/07/2017 14:08

100% this.

I went to my pricey gym 4x per week, religiously. Hardly ever went to the cheaper ones, as they felt like a nasty chore.

Iamastonished · 07/07/2017 14:08

I pay £34 a month for off peak membership at Bannatynes, but I work part time and go 2 - 3 times a week. Full membership is £39 a month, so I think £50 per month is expensive. I'm not in London or the home counties though.

LockedOutOfMN · 07/07/2017 14:09

Where are these gyms that cost £89 a year or £10 a month? I'm genuinely shocked as I've never heard of gyms that are so cheap unless subsidised by your employer.

I first joined a paid gym when I left uni in 2002 and that was a pretty basic small gym with good classes but no pool and averagely nice changing facilities (towels included) for £25 a month! That's the cheapest I've heard of in U.K.

RedSkyAtNight · 07/07/2017 14:10

Depends what you want - David Lloyd is a "nicer" gym so charges accordingly. The local council gym will be cheaper but have fewer frills.

Banalarama · 07/07/2017 14:11

Sounds good to me but I'm in London and I was paying £42 a month about twenty years ago here for a fitness first

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 07/07/2017 14:11

It's not subsidised. I don't want to say where I am obviously, but it is the cheapest in our town. It has the smallest pool of all of them, and there are probably other differences but I don't go so I wouldn't know.

Still, it works for DH's needs Smile

S0dabread · 07/07/2017 14:12

I am a DL member and love it. To be fair it's more than just a gym for me as I can work and relax there. We have a lovely outdoor pool too. Never problems with parking or overcrowding. The best bit is the kids club. If this appeals then it's the right gym for you. But yes you can go a lot cheaper for a very functional "in and out" gym if you don't want the other stuff.

Tobebythesea · 07/07/2017 14:12

Wow! Where are you in the country? I go to David Lloyd and the basic package (no tennis, towels etc) is £100 a month. SE

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 07/07/2017 14:13

I'm in the North.

ExConstance · 07/07/2017 14:15

I pay £30pcm which includes swimming, classes, gym. Pleasant leisure centre. The local private "fitness" club charges the same, but no swimming there.

NerrSnerr · 07/07/2017 14:17

We pay a fortune for David Lloyd for our family of 4 but we use it loads. Swimming as a family, classes, the little soft play, we go for breakfast and lunch, crèche, gym etc. Ours has an outdoor pool too so great in summer.

WeirdAndPissedOff · 07/07/2017 14:20

The gymn I use is £15 per month including classes, however there is no pool and it's low-staffed. You also struggle to be able to use the equipment during peak times (never been to any other Gymn so don't know how usual this is) but it's 24/7.

Our local David Lloyd is £85 per month I believe, but much fancier.

As a pp said it depends what you're looking for, and whether you'll get a lot out of the facilities.

Iamastonished · 07/07/2017 14:20

I'm in Yorkshire. My membership includes gym use, classes and use of the pool. They don't provide towels, but that doesn't bother me. It isn't geared up for children, but DD is 16 so it isn't an issue for me.
