Is £50 a month reasonable for gym membership?

Got an appointment with David Lloyd tomorrow. Aparranyky it's £50 a month for the basic package (£65 a month for the full package including tennis).

Is this pricey or reasonable? For this they have personal trainers, swimming, sauna and guest passes. DH says I can go but I feel guilty! I want to get in shape for my holiday in November (and beyond obviously) but I'm too self conscious to run outside and can't be arsed with home fitness dvds etc as the motivation is just not there if it's just me on my own in the living room

My local council one is £45 with a pool and all classes and gym ( just installed egym as well)

HipsterHunter · 07/07/2017 14:24

Dl is amazing, Ithink I paid over £100 a month when I was there. LOVED the swimming pools. More like a health club.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 07/07/2017 14:26

According to ds the pools are amazing at David Lloyd! Very expensive though.

Sallystyle · 07/07/2017 14:30

Me and dh pay £70 a month for a joint gold membership. That entitles us to use the gym off and on peak. We can also use the pool and do any classes. Badminton, tennis, wall climbing etc has a small entrance price still.

We could have gone elsewhere and got it for much cheaper but they would not have the facilities our gym has and we can walk there in 15 minutes.

Owl1011 · 07/07/2017 14:32

I think the cost of a gym is relevant to how often you use it!

sailorcherries · 07/07/2017 14:33

I paid £41 for a gym in a hotel, with pool and health suite included. I hated it.

I'm going back to the council gym, £28.99 as a council employee or £34.99 for non employee adults. This includes access to all gyms and swimming pools in the council, including personal fitness plans, classes and nutritional advice and plans.

I wanted to join Pure Gym as it's open 24/7 and less than £15 a month.

DrDreReturns · 07/07/2017 14:34

We have a couples membership which is £30 a month. The gym is walking distance from home. It includes classes. However there is no swimming pool and it closes mid afternoon at the weekend so it wouldn't suit everyone.

Blobby10 · 07/07/2017 14:35

I pay £25 a month for a 24/7 one, including any classes. Good changing rooms and showers but no swimming pool/jacuzzi/steam room or other'extras'! Staffed hours are 7am-10pm but I go at 5am and know what I'm doing so its great for me

LadyWithLapdog · 07/07/2017 14:36

Sounds about right for DL. Our local one is £75+ last time I asked and I just can't justify £1K a year for the occasional swim. But if you have the time and money, why not?

Iamastonished · 07/07/2017 14:37

Do people really go and use a gym in the small hours of the morning?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 07/07/2017 14:37

I pay £20 a month but the gym doesnt have a pool and is only open outside of school hours. It suits me though as I can't swim and I work full time.

I joined a pricey gym that is closer to home and I hated it as I found it snobby and unfriendly so it was a complete waste of money.

joannegrady90 · 07/07/2017 14:39

LockedOut

I'm in the North east, part of xercise4 less.
No sauna or anything fancy but lots of machines, weights and a huge Hall for classes.

My other local gym does swimming, classes and gym for £35.99 monthly.

MrJohnsonAteMyCustard · 07/07/2017 14:40

I pay £15.99 per month at Puregym. Open 24 hours a day. Big gym, good equipment, friendly staff. All classes free.

No pool though.

NC4now · 07/07/2017 14:42

Do you get personal training included in your membership? If you do, that seems really reasonable, but check.
My gym is nice - pool, sauna, jacuzzi etc, and is £30 a month including classes, but PT is £35 a session, paid separately.

bigbluebus · 07/07/2017 14:45

We pay £46 pm for 2 of us at a gym which has usual gym equipment, weights, a studio for classes and also spin bikes. We both used to pay more for a club with a pool but rarely used the pool so wasn't worth it for us.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 07/07/2017 14:49

Depends where you are. I'm in Berkshire and I pay £105 a month. £57 of that is for the 'nice' gym with a pool and trainers, latest equipment, clean etc. The rest is for unlimited use of the adjoining spa.

PoisonousSmurf · 07/07/2017 14:50

Our local leisure center is £37 a month. But although the gym is nice, I started to hate going as it was always full of old people and teenagers from the local comprehensive (it was part of the curriculum).
The elderly patrons were sent there as part of fitness regime and was on 'prescription'.
Always had to wait for machines to be available and this was in the middle of the day! Would rather pay more to have easy access.

Alison100199 · 07/07/2017 14:54

Sounds very reasonable. I'm in London and my nearest DL is £100 a month. You will get classes included but not personal trainers.

chaz777 · 07/07/2017 14:57

I pay £34 per month. That includes anytime access, gym, all classes, outdoor sports, swimming, rackets sports and best of all two hours of crèche a day 👍🏼

Aeroflotgirl · 07/07/2017 14:57

That's quite reasonable for David Lloyd, some of you will baulk at my Dojo monthly membership, £49 for 2 classes a week.

afternoonnapper · 07/07/2017 14:58

Mine is £22 a month as it's subsidised through work. But it's £30 per personal trainer session. If you get a few sessions a month then that price is totally worth it.

TalkinPeece · 07/07/2017 14:59

I work out the cost on a per visit / per swim / per class basis.
My family membership is upwards of £200 a month (no racquet sports, no PT)
but that pans out at £1 per swim, £1.50 per class and £1 per gym workout between us
which is pretty cheap

jamie2 · 07/07/2017 15:03

my virgin active membership is about £85 a month. the whole package including personal training is £340 a month

Dadstheworld · 07/07/2017 15:19

I think Total Fitness is around £45. So that doesn't sound bad for David Lloyd.

Yvetteballs · 07/07/2017 15:25

That's cheap for DAVID Lloyd. I was paying way more than that off peak years ago.
