Charlie Gard case

AIBU to feel the drama over this poor little boy is not helpful? I read the Pope and Donald Trump were suggesting they help- when several courts have agreed it is in his best interests to let the little boy die with dignity. I feel sorry for him as he may be in pain and it is unfair to add further to false hope for the parents as well. I also feel that many, many people has awful situations where babies die, sadly, for example stillbirths and other cases which are just un-heard and un-noticed and people have to deal with it, so why is there such a huge focus here.

Unfortunately, most of the comments on the news sites seem to be slating GOSH again and taking this as evidence that they were wrong.

I feel as if I am in a parallel universe sometimes.

Maudlinmaud · 07/07/2017 18:15

The video of the parents having a picnic with Charlie is very sad, but it also can give people a real insight into their lives and how they perceive this situation. I suppose you would try to have some sense of normality, that's very important but there is something else there, can't put my finger on it.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 07/07/2017 18:29

I feel so sorry for everyone at GOSH - the clinical, clerical and charity staff. The poor PR team dealing with the social media fallout of the illiterate shrieking "army", and still taking the time to respond to every single message of support they've received.

This "army" will always call them murderers now, regardless of the outcome. If/when the therapy is unsuccessful, they'll be called neglectful for not letting him go sooner. If the court rejects it, no doubt there will be some illuminati conspiracy theory that GOSH staff pretended to be judges to get the ruling in their favour. If Charlie dies while waiting, they'll have murdered him.

Something I've been wondering since I first heard about this case a couple of weeks ago - have the parents been given or offered regular counselling since his diagnosis?

Something similar happened in my own family a few years ago, albeit with an adult (the had been in an accident, were on a ventilator in ICU and had been declared brain dead). We were told that the ventilator was going to be switched off and not a lot else. The next of kin decided to challenge it and my relative was kept alive for weeks before the inevitable happened. Whilst I can see now that switching off the life support was 100% the right thing to do, we were offered no sort of emotional support* and I feel that if we were, it could have at least alleviated some of of the suffering endured by my relative and us as a family.

  • A meeting was arranged with someone who we thought was a bereavement counsellor, but actually turned out to be someone from the organ donation team to see if any of the organs were suitable to donate. We were horrified! My relative was actually a registered organ donor and I would have been happy for them to donate, but the next of kin refused due to the way it was all handled, so everyone lost out which was a real shame.
DarthMaiden · 07/07/2017 18:36

@StiffyByng

I'll also be donating later this evening. It feels fitting for some good to come out of this awful
situation, that might help children suffering from Mitochondrial Disease and provide support to their families.

GabsAlot · 07/07/2017 18:37

i feel like GOSH have been bullied by protesters into this decision-like othrs said though they cant win either way

he wont be fully cured an i think its cruel

Me too, rather that than some shitty pro life fraudster from America.

SouthWestmom · 07/07/2017 18:42

I think my understanding is that he was diagnosed, parents found the treatment, GOSH considered it, Charlie then had numerous seizures resulting in damage that made sustaining that state of life unacceptable and with no prospect of reversal the treatment was deemed in appropriate. Had he not had the seizures and damage, he may have had the treatment in January?

So now, this is so hard as the family have had to live with hope.

Goingtobeawesome · 07/07/2017 18:49

Noeuf, thank you for that explanation.

DonutCone · 07/07/2017 18:50

The boy baby is looking horribly swollen. It looks like his organs are starting to fail.

I really can't understand the parents at this point. They are costing the NHS a huge amount of money and causing their child continued suffering, and for what end?

therootoftheroot · 07/07/2017 18:53

i have never had a child in this position so i can't say for sure what i would do
however, if i had a dog that couldn't eat, see, hear, move, communicate...i would not be keeping it alive and i fi tried to keep it alive i wuld probably be prosecuted for cruelty

I know it is heartbreaking for them but they need to allow their child to escape the horrendous situation he is in

JaneEyre70 · 07/07/2017 18:54

This is on the High Court lists for Monday 10th July, and the Judge who originally ruled in April:

Court 47

At 2:00PM
IN OPEN COURT(unless otherwise directed by the court)
FD1700358 Gard

SerfTerf · 07/07/2017 18:56

Charlie Gard case
3littlebadgers · 07/07/2017 18:57

My heart is aching for that little boy Sad. His tiny body looks so broken. I keep coming back to the thread hoping to hear that he has passed away of his own accord, and he is free from all this suffering. As a bereaved mother I honestly never thought I would say that.
My stomach churned when I saw that there is going to be another hearing. There can be no winners.
I know no one values one life over another, and that GOSH just want Charlie's best interest at heart, but another court case must be costing another fortune on top of the goodness knows how much they have already spent. That money has to come from somewhere, and ultimately cuts will have to be made elsewhere.
My friend has got a little girl under the care of GOSH. They are amazing and a lifeline not only to the child but my friend, the mother too. The operations she has are staving off paralysis. What if all of this added expense means many other families like theirs miss out on the chance of help?

JaneEyre70 · 07/07/2017 18:58

I wonder if GOSH have had this in mind all week? Unless it is a preliminary hearing but I can't see anyone wanting to drag this out further.....

NannyOggsKnickers · 07/07/2017 18:58

For what it's worth I don't blame the parents. I imagine that they are currently inundated by helpful lies suggestions and new 'research'. It must be very difficult not to buy into that if you're desperate.
The real shame and blame goes to those stringing these poor people along. Who are elongating the process for their own entertainment (CA) or benefit (US doctors). CA members probably don't recognise that this is a sick blood sport for them now, but it is. They're all caught up in the thrill ride of mob mentality. What is their realistic outcome for Charlie? Because he is facing a very short, painful life as a gloried lab rat. That doesn't seem right. Brain damage doesn't reverse itself.

Stopnamechanging · 07/07/2017 18:58

DarthMaiden I welled up at that donation, so generous Flowers

GinSoakedTwitchyPony · 07/07/2017 18:59

I'm glad it's on Monday, I had expected it to be a few weeks yet.
Although I suppose it can be taken to ECHR again?

SouthWestmom · 07/07/2017 18:59

Thanks going I was starting to question why they hadn't let him go, so went back and reread the judges findings.

I can see this being awful for everyone involved.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 07/07/2017 18:59

That poor boy is being totally failed by those prolonging his suffering. And while I can understand to some extent that his parents are desperate with love and sorrow, this family is not being helped by the frothing idiots in the CA mob. It makes me angrier every day.

TheFairyCaravan · 07/07/2017 19:00

This is all such a mess.

If the ruling is overturned on Monday a very dangerous precedent is going to be set.

GabsAlot · 07/07/2017 19:00

sorry if im not right but i thought th original court decision meant they could turn life support off?

im being calld disgusting on twittr to dare stick up for gosh
