dd1 was taken to a cemetery by the school today, and saw a dead person

I probably wouldnt mind if it was one of my sons, but dd has recently been through a phase of being v scared of death/dead people. She was fairly upset.

why do the school think its ok to take the children out of the blue? I am pretty cross, but there is no point complaining, it is a bavarian school so the only answer they know is "we know best what is good for your child"

Is she / was she upset?

I wouldn't mind if this happened to DS...I would rather he see that dead people are simply dead people and understand that death is a normal part of the continuum we live in.

But can see that it could be contentous for a school trip...

But...the most important aspect - is she upset or disturbed?

Hang on, surely the school would have had to ask permission from, the vicar for this trip, and surely he would have said not at so and so time there is a funeral being held, and why on earth was the coffin open?

If you go to the Ganges, or any religiously popular spot on a river or other water in a Hindu country you will very likely see funeral pyres, with visible burning body parts.

ever tactful, twiglett. I havent yet got to the bottom of where the open coffin was. It may have been in a chapel of rest or something like that.

I thought you had to give signed consent for outings - if you haven't given your consent then I would definitely complain. What a strange school trip? Where are the good ol' days when we used to go rock climbing or canoeing?

"evangelical religion class"?

What is that?
Not being flippant, but what on earth?

maybe other countries do have a more healthy attitude to death than we do, but it would scare a 10 year old for ages wouldn't it?

Is this a christian school?

it all seems rather extraordinary

I probably wouldn't have a problem with it but if it was my mother's funeral and a load of kids trouped through I would be mightily annoyed

They tramped through someone's funeral or viewing in a Chapel of Rest with a straggling crocodile of chattering children?

Funeral etiquette in Bavaria is quite informal, isn't it!!??

NN - how is your DD?

Nightynight - have you mentioned that you live in a different country and that their values are perhaps different? Perhaps people don't appreciate you are not in England?

Visit to graveyard wouldn't bother me but seeing abody though it sounds like it wasn't on purpose.

batters - that reminds me that at my (very dear) grans funeral my cousins and i all got the giggles from the emotion and came round the side of a building right into the path of the next lot coming in, laughing our guts up...!

she has just been persuaded to go to bed on the promise that a dead person will not pop up to scare her. She was in tears for around an hour earlier.

the jokes on this thread are f**g inappropriate.

It sounds awful NN - I think all you can do is provide reassurance for her when and if it crops up.
I remember watching Jaws when I was too young - I was convinced that the bloke in the boat with the one eye was going to slide out of the U-bend when I went to the toilet. I was terrified, so you have all my sympathy for your DD's real experience

Poor DD Sounds horrid for her, esp with no warning, no chat about it in preparation. Definitely not appropriate for a school trip IMO. Hope she is okay about it soon.
