PerkingFaintly, this wasn't actually particularly deep or insightful on my part. I was basically referring to the fact that 'Western' values have generally been branded as liberal (as in tolerant/permissive) terms while the major players have also, de facto, been pushing a (somewhat less popular; I don't disagree with your assessment personally) neoliberal economic agenda.
Today's speech, OTOH, struck me as unusual in that it appealed to a shared Western identity/set of values on the one hand, while appealing to autocratic and isolationist sentiments on the other. Having read the full write-up since my last post, though, I'll say that he absolutely pays lip-service to traditional liberal values - just in a context that doesn't sit easily with them.
