Or not...

Reuters/Ipsos -23 % approval, so 23 % overall disapproval

FOX News -6 % approval, so 6 % overall disapproval

Perihelion · 03/07/2017 17:42

So how would Charlie Guard's scenario play out if he was born in the US and his parents had shite/no insurance?
Or is that tweet just for the evangelical " friends " he was hanging out with at the weekend.

Lweji · 03/07/2017 17:44

It's the equivalent of 'those parents' who see their children kicking dirt at or snatching toys from other children at the park and say 'Now, Wilberforce, we mustn't do that. Tsk tsk, Wilberforce is such a 'lively child!' but do precisely nothing to stop them.

Across, you're not alone:

Notice the Republican interviewee trying to push the "ignore his tweets, focus on his (GOP) agenda".
I don't think that's particularly beneficial either, as it keeps shifting and he keeps contradicting himself and GOP, as even pointed out by the host.

lionheart · 03/07/2017 17:51

This is long and heavy in places but represents another strand of this debate about authority (in relation to the intellectual) and what passes as truth.

It's unusual to have a poster who has only started posting recently and only on one topic.

You mean we have our very own dedicated shit stirrer. I feel so special. We should get them a special water feature so they feel more at home. Wink

I've just realised that apart from this thread, and the occasional post on the westministers thread, I don't post on any other threads! Blush

It's interesting the attention Trump pays to a sick English boy at the same time he prepares to take insurance away from 23m Americans.

If Charlie were American, GOP would blame Charlie for his condition and Mike Pence would lecture the parents about personal responsibility.

Tillerson Ready to Let Russia Decide Assad’s Fate

In talks with the U.N. chief, Tillerson indicates Russia should be in the driver’s seat when it comes to the future of Syria.

Jared Yates Sexton @JYSexton

I'd like to give a little insight into what it's like being a journalist in 2017 and why Trump's rhetoric is incredibly dangerous 1/
Yesterday I broke the news that the guy who made Trump's CNN gif also created an antisemitic meme and was obviously racist. 2/
In the wake of that, I received numerous threats. I was told people wanted to shoot, strangle me, hang me, throw me out of a helicopter 3/
Some assumed I was Jewish because I spoke out against antisemitism, others said I was a race-traitor. Got it on both sides. 4/
Now articles are showing up on Neo-Nazi websites, there are videos spliced with Goebbels telling me not to test his patience 5/
That one also has footage from Natural Born Killers of a journalist being executed by shotgun. 6/
On forums, under my tweets, there's a list of excerpts from newspaper articles about journalists being slaughter, the details gory. 7/
Meanwhile, people are claiming I'm making up the threats and then immediately threatening me. In the same message. 8/
Over on Facebook I'm getting messages from strangers about "goyim" and talking about what happened to Jews in the 40's. 9/
This environment is the creation of the man in the White House. There are valid criticisms of the media, many on point, this isn't that 10/
When you start calling a group of people enemies of the country, this is what happens. When you call them scum, this happens. 11/
This is what happens when you have Alex Jones calling mainstream media pedophiles and Satan worshippers, and threatening to crush them. 12/
This environment we have right now is volatile. Some of these threats are empty, but people who are unwell consume this stuff. 13/
Even as I'm typing this I'm getting antisemitic memes and messages. It's happening in realtime. 14/
And everyone keeps bringing up the shooting in Virginia. In a way, they're right. That's what happens in this environment. 15/
This shouldn't be a country where these violent instincts are cultivated and encouraged. We're at a real tipping point right now. 16/
But make no mistake, there's something growing in this country, and it is very, very ugly. 17/17

The scales do not balance well for Trump:

www.newsweek.com/support-donald-trumps-impeachment-higher-latest-approval-rating-631212

Here is what his biographer has to say about those tweets:

thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/340481-trump-biographer-trumps-not-a-strategic-thinker

'“It’s the money trail and what it might say about his business relationships and his past financial dealings.”

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 03/07/2017 20:12

Gosh i hadnt realised trump had done more than just tweet about Charlie. Apologies if this is a repeat:

amp.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/jul/03/donald-trump-offers-help-for-terminally-ill-baby-charlie-gard

AcrossthePond55 · 03/07/2017 20:23

I think Jarod Sexton has good reason to be afraid, as do any other 'high profile' journos.

I'm reminded of the rash of bombings/shootings at abortion clinics here in the late '90s. Evangelicals started prating about 'judgement' and 'wrath of God' and before you knew it, unbalanced people were considering themselves 'Arms of God' and shooting at providers and planting bombs in clinics insisting they were justified in doing so, that it was 'righteous action'. I'm afraid we're going to soon begin seeing the same 'bent' people starting to believe they're acting 'for the good of the Country because, you know, Trump'. It's scary.

As far as Trump's tweet about poor Charlie Gard, it's just another proof of what a prick he is and what a loose (non-) hold he has on the realities and dignity of the presidency. He tweeted to make himself look good to his fans; "See how wonderful I am, I'd save Charlie if I could". How low can you go, using a sick child for 'brownie points'. It's disgusting.

I'd go further and say that while their ineffecticely parenting the toddler, they're also happy for you to be distracted by the horrendous behaviour while they surreptitiously sneak all the food at the communal picnic into their bag, without having brought a dish to share to begin with.
Ha Pain! You've hit that nail on the head!

AcrossthePond55 · 03/07/2017 20:38

As far as impeachment, I still say it's highly unlikely to happen. There isn't time to build the case AND gather the support both in Congress and in the public to impeach.

There are so many 'layers' of people between Scrotus and Russia that it will take too long to build an air tight case, one that leads directly back to him, not to Flynn, not to Manafort, not to Kushner. Directly to Scrotus. With Nixon, we had tapes that directly connected him to Watergate. No, unless Scrotus does something really egregious (and I mean like literally waving his willy from the Senate Chamber podium and telling Congress 'suck this!') the GOP will never support impeachment.

I believe that Putin has absolutely incontrovertible evidence that Trump directly ordered/condoned Russian interference but we have as much chance of Putin releasing that evidence as we have of me being named Miss America. In short, none the fuck whatsoever!

I've just realised that apart from this thread, and the occasional post on the westministers thread, I don't post on any other threads!

I'm afraid you might need to go post on a random AIBU thread about parking just to prove you are a real mumsnetter pain :o

To be completly open I now rarely post anywhere except here or Westminstenders. But we do both manage avoid just turning up on the thread just to shout 'Trumps winning and you are all middle-aged losers who I don't give a crap about, but somehow just can't keep away from. lmao!!'

So I think the point still stands....lmao, or similar indication of general amusement at others expense...

BiglyBadgers · 03/07/2017 21:31

This is fucked up:

The problem with teached a chat bot with lots of real online content and conversations is that real conversations are messy and complicated and full of context. If you want a chat bot that is whiter than white and pure as the driven snow (or even just not prone to saying highly inappropriate stuff at random moments) you will need to heavily filter the content you use to train it or put in a lot of very complicated rules for conversation.

However, that would be an awful lot of work and leave it seeming very inhuman and frankly really boring. I think we are really a long way from creating an AI that can carry out a really human conversation while negotiating the complexities of what makes a particular response offensive or inappropriate. Hell, I know plenty of fully grown humans with decades of experience and practice who can't manage it. Some barely hatched bot hardly stands a chance.

cozietoesie · 03/07/2017 21:37

S&P and Fitch have now made warm noises about Illinois. They'd just better follow through with this 'concrete progress'.

cozietoesie · 03/07/2017 21:40

Sorry. The state had just better.......

Sleipnirthewonderhorse · 03/07/2017 22:43

I'm so disgusted by trump commenting on Charlie Gage. What exactly is he offering? Cure for a terminal illness? Our courts have had to make a difficult and unpleasant decision and he is such a shit stirrer.
I foolishly read an article about this on Fox (I feel dirty all over), and a popular view of commentators was that socialist health services eg nhs are happy to let kids die because of financial costs. Which rather misses the point of socialism.
www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/07/03/trump-enters-charlie-gard-debate-would-be-delighted-to-help.html
Another surprisingly popular opinion I've seen on Fox commentators, which I got the impression came from breitbart but I can't bring myself to check, is that the nhs is happy to let people to die so that they can harvest organs.
Anyway, I'm sure that Trump is interested in an unwell British baby out of the goodness of his heart, not because Fox news reported it and the btl commentators went on about how obamacare, like the nhs, kills babies.

Gumpendorf · 03/07/2017 23:12

Across. You may be right about impeachment especially as these are not normal times. But as I understand it, Mueller is looking at 3 things

  1. Russia
  2. RICO/ Money laundering
  3. Obstruction of justice

Given what we've always known about Trump and his business dealings, 2 looks the most likely to bring him down. I suspect Trump knows that which is why he is so antsy at the moment.

PerkingFaintly · 03/07/2017 23:56

Sleipnir, that's interesting.

When I heard (from this thread) about 45's tweet, I reverse-engineered it and concluded that Fox News or commentators were probably running a story with exactly the angle you've now described.

Otherwise why would 45 give a shit?
