Also in The Atlantic (How Russians have dealt with fake news):

I think the problem (dissemination of dubious news and alt-facts via social media) can also provide the solution.

As someone pointed out earlier in the thread, it is better to access lots of sources and to include those that do not simply reflect your existing world-view. This is easier to do now because of the internet.

Also worth waiting to see how any story is taken up and substantiated in subsequent reports.

I don't think there is a perfectly objective journalistic practise but also wonder whether it is altogether desirable.

I really like Christiane Amanpour, for example, whose experiences in Sarajevo led her to a 'truthful, not neutral' position.

At some point the Fake News will be forced to discuss our great jobs numbers, strong economy, success with ISIS, the border & so much else!

I am pretty sure the media have mentioned job numbers. Strong economy? Wages aren't growing.

cozietoesie · 03/07/2017 13:50

I see he's left out his remarks about the stock market this time. Wink

Lweji · 03/07/2017 13:57

What success with ISIS? Did I miss something?

What jobs?

I have to start watching Fox.

Very good Lweji, especially re Fox. Grin

Anyone seen the story about Chris Christie?

He shut the public beaches because of a budget standoff and proceeded to spend some of the independence day weekend on the deserted beach with his family.

Then he denied he'd spent the weekend "in the sun" and when photos of him on the completely empty beach emerged, he joked/claimed he hadn't spend it "in the sun" because he wore a hat.

cozietoesie · 03/07/2017 15:06

Ah. 'That's the way it goes. Run for Governor and you can have a residence.'

It won't go down well.

If we can help little #CharlieGard, as per our friends in the U.K. and the Pope, we would be delighted to do so.

Isn't that none of his business?

cozietoesie · 03/07/2017 15:56

The Pope weighed in so he is also. It shows that he is not immune to the 'least' among us in trouble etc.

Lweji · 03/07/2017 16:10

Maybe I missed it from earlier, as I didn't watch Trump's speech about space exploration, but I've just come across this clip of Buzz (in case you're reading, Don, it's not Lightyear) Aldrin's face during it.

It's surprising that he's for it. Either he thinks it's a good escape strategy for him, or he thinks illegal aliens are the same as in Men in Black.

Lweji · 03/07/2017 16:10

The clip

cozietoesie · 03/07/2017 16:13

Aldrin' face was certainly a picture.

It doesn't surprise me though. He wants to get to Mars. 'Trump Station' has such a ring to it............

Lweji · 03/07/2017 16:16

Only if he gets a second term. Confused

And I doubt even the next GOP president will want to name anything after Trump. Unless it's Eric. ConfusedConfusedConfused

Lweji · 03/07/2017 16:19

Tremendous (!) hypocrisy regarding CharlieGard, when he doesn't give a toss about refugee children in need.

SanFranBear · 03/07/2017 16:19

WTF is with that Charlie Gard tweet Angry

It is an extremely troubling and upsetting case and I cannot, just cannot understand why he thinks it's appropriate to weigh in.

Just when I think he cannot anger me anymore... Sad

Orlantina · 03/07/2017 16:24

Indeed. What makes a white British child more valuable than a Syrian refugee child?

lionheart · 03/07/2017 16:48

A desperate situation now made worse ...

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 03/07/2017 17:07

across

It's the equivalent of 'those parents' who see their children kicking dirt at or snatching toys from other children at the park and say 'Now, Wilberforce, we mustn't do that. Tsk tsk, Wilberforce is such a 'lively child!' but do precisely nothing to stop them.

I'd go further and say that while their ineffecticely parenting the toddler, they're also happy for you to be distracted by the horrendous behaviour while they surreptitiously sneak all the food at the communal picnic into their bag, without having brought a dish to share to begin with.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 03/07/2017 17:09

Gah, *while they're ineffectively

It's a poorly constructed sentence but I'm multitasking badly

Lweji · 03/07/2017 17:09

Just catching up.

Was there a mention of one poll?

How about many polls? The average gives less than 40% approval and just under 55 disapproval. And the extremes (which are usually discarded):

Reuters/Ipsos 6/23 - 6/27 1620 A 35 58 -23
FOX News 6/25 - 6/27 1017 RV 44 50 -6

www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/other/president_trump_job_approval-6179.html

Notice that FOX news universe is smaller than Reuters, and among registered voters (it seems going down by the minute), and Reuters among adult Americans. Reuters online and Fox by phone.

Note on the Reuters poll that Healthcare is rising fast for "Main Problem Facing America", above the Economy and jobs.

Reuters also shows Disapproval among Republicans and Independents as, respectively, 20% and 65%.

Strongest reasons for disapproval:
"The way he treats people like me" and The environment, at a total of 58%
Healthcare Reform

Strongest reasons for approval:
Dealing with ISIS - and the only one with higher approval than disapproval. (people like bombings, it seems, even if they do little)

www.realclearpolitics.com/docs/Core_Political-Topline-2017-06-28.pdf

In both polls, I think the most significant is that the percentage who Strongly Disapprove is quite high, and higher than less strong categories, even among Republicans (Reuters, as I didn't see it in Fox).

www.foxnews.com/politics/interactive/2017/06/28/fox-news-poll-june-28-2017.html

lionheart · 03/07/2017 17:19

'The way he treats people like me,' will probably be one of the many things that bites Trump on his, by now familiar Sad rear.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 03/07/2017 17:30

I don't know what the provenance of the poll is/who the sample was and I'm heading out so can't look it up but this can't be good. Yes, all media has an agenda and is biased to some degree but to not trust it at all isn't usual unless it's state propaganda (in which case you have lots of other problems to be contending with too):

Ryan Struyk @ryanstruyk
59% of Republicans trust the media "not at all" in new NPR/PBS/Marist poll. Another 32% say "not very much." That's a combined 90+%. (!!!)

Lweji · 03/07/2017 17:39

Just to make my previous post clearer:
