To think Angels might be real

I let ll month old DD play with my phone briefly today so that I could drink my coffee and she somehow managed to google 'archangels' which got me thinking - I've unexpectedly found white feathers indoors and seen pretty blue lights in my room at night (not from passing emergency vehicles!) but nothing more convincing than that.

Ex DP's DM however swore blind that soon after her own DM died she saw something in her living room that she can only describe as an angel. She was convinced.

Anyone else had more impressive experiences than mine? I'd love to think they're real.

Haha, apologies for any offense!

But yeah, dragons (including a fire-breathing one) do appear in the Bible, so belief in them is as justified as belief in angels.

PlayingSardines · 30/06/2017 19:19

Honey, sigh. Get with the message. We only believe in dragons who drop feathers.

Or, you know, leathery scales or something.

I'm definitely of the school of thought that if Angels (and by extension the God they serve) do exist and they are supposed to intervene/help those in need when asked, they're either not very good at the whole intervening and helping part or they are indeed just sadistic twats who can't be bothered. Leaving feathers as a sign is all very nice and finding keys is a neat party trick but when it comes down to doing something about actual suffering they're pretty ineffective aren't they?

Much prefer dragons, at least you know where you stand with a dragon, it's going to toast you to a crisp and/or eat you, none of this worship and believe in me and I may or may not help you out depending on whether you know the secret codes and handshakes or not and even if you do know the secret handshakes I might be out the office the day you and your offspring call on me to help as your house burns around you.

Long, true. Angels are hard to please.

Morphene · 30/06/2017 21:26

I'm pretty sure it will turn out that just like dinosaurs, dragons are also covered in feathers!

That said, I do believe if a dragon is trying to attract your attention they leave a different kind of offering. It also falls from the sky but smells strangely and often has a black centre surrounded by white goop. It will often land on your car to remind you that the dragon is watching out for you and keeping you safe on the roads.

I personally had a whole cohort of dragons looking out for me today...so much so I actually went mad and washed the car when I got home for the first time in years.

I mean even if intellectually you accept the above are both provably BS, you still in your heart of heart know it won't be your child that gets killed in a hit and run...it won;t be you that gets made redundant and ends up going to food banks....

Chances are, it won't be your child killed in a hit and run.

This isn't a case of believing stuff without evidence. It's just statistics.

usernameinfinito · 02/07/2017 12:31

morphene those were not dragons, they are dinosaurs!

nauticant · 02/07/2017 14:48

Earlier I took a shortcut over a small meadow and going by the evidence of the feathers it must be angel central. Tragically a cluster of feathers showed the spot where one had been caught by a cat or a fox. Very sad.

Leilaniii · 02/07/2017 14:57

Angels are ridiculous. Every living thing has evolved so that its body works logically. Angels have wings yet they would not be able to fly as they have been put on. Basically a human with bird's wings.

Arrant nonsense.

Leilaniii · 02/07/2017 15:00

If God is real, then so are angels. Apparently angels are messengers from God. If anyone ridicules you about your angel experience, ask them if they believe in God.

In the words of Stephen Hawking, it's all fairy stories. We are surrounded by evidence of millions of years of evolution.

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 02/07/2017 16:06

Angels are on par with stuff like healing crystals IMO. An acquaintance was into crystals and asked me to close my eyes and choose one from a selection in a pouch. So I rummaged around and picked one out, which she then explained was because of some spiritual reason. What she didn't take into consideration was that the crystals were all cut intp different shapes - pyramid, cube, egg, etc - and I chose the one that felt nicest in my hand. She was convinced I'd chosen it because the particular type of mineral was sending me a message, that it was proof of somethingHmm Critical thinking was obviously not her speciality.

If we could have a look at the DNA from one of these feathers we could learn more about angels and their origin, and finally silence the disbelievers
Great idea! Except you just know that believers would say "OK, it's feral pigeon DNA, but that's because angels come in the bodies of other species" and would still convince themsleve they exist.

i know its a bird feather, but when i see a small white feather on the mat i think ' thanks mum' as i know she is watching out for us all. silly really, but they do tend to show up when things are bad.i believe in angels
Or is it that when they appear on the mat when everything's going well you don't register them in the same way? Conformational bias?

when I've had something to be thankful for I put a bowl of milk by the back door
Totally off topic, but it's not a good idea if it's done at night and hedgehogs can reach it. They don't tend to be thankful for gastroenteritis.

Evolution can't explain everything imo.

Leilaniii · 03/07/2017 13:31

Evolution can't explain everything imo

Evolution can, we can't. Therefore we make up stories in order to make some sense of the world.

Morphene · 03/07/2017 13:32

I'm pretty sure evolution can't explain black holes...but I'm not sure that is a problem....

Morphene · 03/07/2017 13:32

name something specific you feel the theory of evolution doesn't explain and I'll take a look for you.
