To think Angels might be real

I let ll month old DD play with my phone briefly today so that I could drink my coffee and she somehow managed to google 'archangels' which got me thinking - I've unexpectedly found white feathers indoors and seen pretty blue lights in my room at night (not from passing emergency vehicles!) but nothing more convincing than that.

Ex DP's DM however swore blind that soon after her own DM died she saw something in her living room that she can only describe as an angel. She was convinced.

Anyone else had more impressive experiences than mine? I'd love to think they're real.

I think angels are in the same group as the tooth fairy and santa

You should grow out of it

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/06/2017 05:34

Some people believe in a flat earth, creationism and unicorns. Who am I to tell them they are wrong?

Nakedavenger74 · 30/06/2017 05:46

@viques I once worked in a hotel with a guy who reckoned he had some gift of seeing dead people and talking to guardian angels. I am deeply sceptical although if found him intriguing.

We were having late night drinks for a leaving do once all guests had gone to bed. He went round the table telling people who their guardian angels were. The usual stuff and he just bypassed me. He did everyone and the topic moved on to the various dead people who appeared to wander the bland lobby of the hotel. I kept on asking him 'what about me' and he continued to ignore me. Eventually he came to me and said 'the reason I have passed over you is that you have so many guardian angels and they are all arguing about who is going to speak first'.

It's all bullshit but it still makes me Grin

QueenOfRubovia · 30/06/2017 06:04

My kitchen was littered with white feathers this morning.
Fucking bastard killer cat.

So open minded their brains fall out.

Malfoyy · 30/06/2017 06:25

No such thing it's just fantasy to help you feel better

Dewey595 · 30/06/2017 06:29

I believe in them, yes.

KimmySchmidt1 · 30/06/2017 06:29

my father had a heart attack and was very ill in hospital and was hallucinating a lot, particularly about death. He was surrounded by other elderly people many of who were doing the same. It is an extremely common side effect. When they all do it together in the middle of the night it often converges - they are all impressionable and their brains are wonky from the temporary infections etc. It all seems very real at the time and really upset my dad. Your story is very commonplacein hospitals I'm afraid. Ask a doctor.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 30/06/2017 06:34

I wonder where these guardian angels were when they were needed recently. Why would an angel stop to fix someone's car, but leave another in a burning building? It's complete nonsense, I'm afraid.

BertieBotts · 30/06/2017 06:36

If it's useful to you to believe in a benevolent protective force then go right ahead. I can't see the sense in stamping on something which brings comfort to somebody.

Just be cautious of going too far down the angel rabbit hole. There are people who sadly want to make money out of people's hope in this manner and most of the books, cards, crystals etc pertaining to 'angel theiry' are sold by these same people.

Started reading this thread. Got up and found a small downy white feather on my suitcase. Staying at a holiday chalet so everything hyperallegenic, no down cushions or pillows here. I would have thought nothing of it if I hadn't been reading this thread, but that's confirmation bias for you.....very mysterious 👼

sexcauldron · 30/06/2017 06:49

Nah not real. Bring me one and I'll believe you, and not a feather or some other possible angel components Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/06/2017 06:56

I was in London once and the Tube stopped and I missed my train and was all alone and desperate... Two gay Tube workers drove me home to Croydon. Also a Danish tourist. Angels, clearly.

I did have a hilarious moment also in Croydon, home of all manifestations. There was MonkFest or some such. Many monks in Croydon, I assume a conference or whatever. I was at a bus stop. I speak pretty good Italian. There was a monk trying to get on a bus by pressing the emergency button, pissing off everyone. I had heard him earlier, so I walked up and said, "you have to wait and the driver will open the doors" in Italian. He looked stunned. I am sure he thought the Lord had provided. Now, I'm fairly sure that I didn't live in Italy for three years just to help a lost Monk. But I'm sure he thought God had sent me. His face!

cherrylove · 30/06/2017 07:30

No I don't believe in angels but when I was small my mother always told me that a feather in the house was an angel.

Weirdly I do struggle to hoover up a feather as I always think of my mum and her feather theory.

BartholinsSister · 30/06/2017 09:11

If we could have a look at the DNA from one of these feathers we could learn more about angels and their origin, and finally silence the disbelievers.

Dumbledoresgirl · 30/06/2017 09:25

I was going to say the same thing about hallucinatory experiences being very common in hospitals.. My dad was a cardiologist. He has told me that the drugs patients are on following heart surgery are extremely powerful and hallucinatory. The fact that 2 people in for the same condition, so on the same medication, see the same thing means nothing.

Guavaf1sh · 30/06/2017 09:55

We should always question the beliefs of those people who believe irrational things that are obviously untrue like angels - the more such ludicrous beliefs are allowed to go unchallenged the more foolish society becomes, the more corrupted our faculties of reasoning and the more likely we are to be taken advantage of by crooks pretending to be 'psychic' or some such nonsense.

This ridiculous notion of 'it's my right to believe in what I want' must obviously also be thrown out - uh, not without evidence no!

hackmum · 30/06/2017 10:00

Where does this belief about angels and white feathers come from? Where did it all start?

And can anyone who believes in it explain how it works? Presumably we can't actually see, hear or touch the angel. But nonetheless the angel manages to leave behind a physical demonstration of its presences. Is that because a feather (which exactly resembles a bird feather) drops out of its wings? Or because the angel goes around scooping white bird feathers to leave behind for people to find?

Gerardbernie · 30/06/2017 10:01

guavaf1sh presumable that goes for all religions then? We should go around telling people they don't have the right to believe in their religion?

Justhadmyhaircut · 30/06/2017 10:04

My friend was murdered 7 years ago this week. . The day he died 4 white doves landed on his front garden. .

I am not religious at all but it seemed quite fitting. .

Notreallyarsed · 30/06/2017 10:05

My mum, who wasn't fanciful in the slightest, told us she could see angels as she was dying. Whether it was the drugs or whether it was true I don't know, but it gave me and my dad comfort. She was in a lot of pain, and was in great distress, and when she said she could see angels she relaxed visibly.

YoureNotASausage · 30/06/2017 10:13

I had a Scandinavian roommate once who said one day something about the bloody elves. Missing socks and the like. I joked along with her until I realised she was serious. Couldn't believe I didn't know elves were real. I may have laughed and she was livid. But she genuinely believed. I was pretty confused to encounter such a solid belief in elves.

But then there's God which I'm more polite about people's belief in but I do think they're nuts.

Angels, why not. It doesn't make any difference to me just don't waste your time talking excitedly about this sort of woo. It's painful to listen to.

BaldricksTrousers · 30/06/2017 10:35

I am a Christian and I don't understand how people can believe in angels but not in Jesus, God, or anything else in the Bible. I don't think you can pick and choose what you want to believe is real in any religion. I mean, there are contradictions to be sure, but it's like saying I believe in Kali but I'm not Hindu and don't believe in any other Hindu gods.

Angels in the Bible are heralds and messengers of God's word. Some of them are soldiers, and can be quite scary. They are not here to help you in everyday life or watch over your deceased cat.
