to let DS have a McDonald's each week?

DS is a swimmer and swims with a squad that's 45 mins away. He starts training at 6:30 and comes out at 8 (pm btw) and it's very convenient for this day. He is healthy and slim and on all the other days has a good, balanced diet.

Is this seriously so bad? Shock

Do people seriously have to garner opinions from the world at large before giving their kids a burger and chips once a week??
God forbid you ever encounter a more challenging conundrum, op...

Restawhile · 29/06/2017 12:14

Barbara yes that's what happened, some posters needed a sugar boost on the other thread !

Wasting time waiting for DD to finish her settling in session at nursery and this thread inspired me 🐷😋

001 Im saying that for me personally I would want them to have something more nutritionally balanced if it was happening every week or else I'd start to feel the parenting guilt creeping in. But if they've had a more balanced meal too (before or after makes no difference) then I would have no problem with a burger top up if they were hungry after burning off energy training.

If it was a less frequent occurrence (for me personally say once every 3/4 weeks) then I wouldn't be at all concerned with an occasional big mac, chips and mcflurry meal as a main meal (although I would then be trying to offset with something more veg heavy for their other meal of the day).

This ^^ in spades Grin

Still, it's been a very entertaining thread, as McDonald's threads never fail to bring out the Amateur Dramatics Society Grin

Worriednurse · 29/06/2017 13:07

It's fine!

Lolabee · 29/06/2017 13:11

DD and I both have McDonald's once a week. Only thing is, she has been in am intense swimming lesson and I have been sat watching 😂
Seriously though it's the only fast food she has and I'm not concerned about it. If I was cooking after she got home she wouldn't eat until half 8 at bedtime. She also has a snack after school before swimming.

HookandSwan · 29/06/2017 13:32

He's getting plenty exercise with the swimming so I doubt a mc Donald's even hits the sides!!

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 29/06/2017 13:34

McDonald's is highly convenient for food on the go, particularly with young children where they can eat on the go from a drive thru, or quickly squeeze in between awkwardly timed activities. We used to have a swimming lesson that kept us out from 12-2. We'd have a mid morning snack to keep us going, then have a McDonald's on the way home in the narrow window before dashing off for school pick-up. For some reason I rarely feel satisfied after cold foods, so McDonald's was by far the most practical way to get some hot food into us to recharge.

I agree that the nutritional quality isn't vastly different to an ordinary lunch box featuring a ham sandwich and bag of crisps. The biggest issue is likely to be a lack fruit and veg, but this can be addressed with carrot sticks/ fruit bags. I tend to go for the chicken wraps. If I'm in need of some stodge then I'll go for fries and drink some of a coke. If I'm feeling more careful I'll swap the fries for the side salad and have water. They have upped their game since the 90s and it is possible to put a fairly balanced meal together if you so wish.

There's often children in sports kit in there, and a McDonald's borders onto the divine when scoffed shortly after running a half marathon Wink

LovePeaceAndHarmony · 29/06/2017 13:43

OP he is your son so you are free to give him whatever you feel like to eat.

Me personally I would never give McDonalds to my son, or any other fast food.

A few weeks ago we were out with a friend and she stopped off and McDonalds drive thru and ordered DS a chicken nugget happy meal, when handed to him and he opened the box he replied "Auntie I don't know what this is"

Keepingupwiththejonesys · 29/06/2017 13:51

Lmfao. 'Auntie, I don't know what this is' as if these where the actual words he said. Did he then say 'mama, auntie is trying to poison me?' By any chance . Seriously though, I give my kids different foods they've never seen sometimes and never do they say that lol.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 29/06/2017 13:59

DavetheCat2001 Yes, we still do apple pies, but they're not overly popular so we rarely hold them. Therefore, there will usually be a 7 minute wait on them (we do tell you this when you order).

ThymeLord · 29/06/2017 14:01

Grin at the kid who doesn't know what chicken nuggets are. Does this child never watch TV or go to school or ever speak to other children? Hilarious. In case you missed it during the last 8 pages, McDonald's chicken nuggets are made from 100% chicken breast meat. The horror!

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 29/06/2017 14:03

I do laugh at the idea that it's healthy or high quality.

Laugh all you want, but it's true that the food is exceptionally high quality (a lot higher than you'd get in your average restaurant actually). I work there.

Keepingupwiththejonesys · 29/06/2017 14:05

Also, are you saying she just went and got him this happy meal. Didn't ask you or him which type he wanted? She just got it assuming he would want the chicken nuggets. Doubt it

😂😂😂

Yeah, that happened Hmm

SistersOfPercy · 29/06/2017 14:09

One of my happiest childhood memories is the bag of chip shop chips I was allowed after the weekly swimming lesson!

Made me smile that, a happy memory for me too. My Nan took me swimming. At the time my Mum was on some health kick and we had fake butter at home, so the 3 rounds of toast that were dripping with real butter were bloody amazing. She also bought me a cup of tea which I'd fill with enough sugar to stand up a spoon.

Happy to say I think my arteries survived it.

waitforitfdear · 29/06/2017 14:12

But won't someone think of the chilldrem? Daily mail sad face

DownstairsMixUp · 29/06/2017 14:15

I'm nearly 30 and still have a take away once a week. I have a healthy bmi and always have done. :/

Keepingupwiththejonesys · 29/06/2017 14:15

Its tickled me more than it should that has! Can just picture the boy handed a happy meal and sitting perplexed as to what this other world food was....not! Fair enough if you don't give your child junk but don't make stuff up about it lol.

My dads never eaten a McDonald's, if asked why he just says he doesn't agree with their ethics. If pushed he says its just his opinions and he'd rather not go into it. Absolutely love that he has his opinion but its just that...his opinion. The rest of our family all have it now and then, my older brother loves the stuff, fit as a fiddle as he has it in moderation with other stuff.

DownstairsMixUp · 29/06/2017 14:17

Howling at the child that doesn't know what a.mcdonalds is. Only on mumsnet!

00100001 · 29/06/2017 14:21

The thread that just keeps on giving

EssentialHummus · 29/06/2017 14:21

DavetheCat2001 In Russian McDonald's you can also get cherry pies and I think peach(?) instead of apple.

Speaking of quality - with the kinds of supply chain size that McDonald's has, I'd expect that they do far better on quality and consistency of meat etc than Bob's Burgers and Fried Chicken down the high street - they're just in a position to standardise quality etc in a way very few other companies can.

LovePeaceAndHarmony · 29/06/2017 14:21

@ThymeLord due to the fact that DS will not eat any kind of meat/poultry.
@Keepingupwiththejonesys exactly that, I guess most adults think every child loves chicken nuggets.
@WhatToDoAboutThis2017 yes that's what happened, and I thought I would be safe to share it on here, without people thinking I'm being dishonest.

YellowLawn · 29/06/2017 14:24

well it is junk food, but tbh no worse than a cheese sandwich...

once a week is a bit mich maybe
