to let DS have a McDonald's each week?

DS is a swimmer and swims with a squad that's 45 mins away. He starts training at 6:30 and comes out at 8 (pm btw) and it's very convenient for this day. He is healthy and slim and on all the other days has a good, balanced diet.

Is this seriously so bad? Shock

It's largely mechanically-recovered meat - gristle etc - which is washed off the bones using high pressure hoses, shovelled up, chopped and shredded, coloured and chemically-flavoured, and shaped into meat-like stuff. Or used to be - as I say, it may have changed since I watched a vomit-inducing documentary a few years ago

This is absolute nonsense. It's just your common or garden beef, same as from anywhere else. this is absolute horseshit.

AllTheWittyNamesAreGone · 29/06/2017 17:28

I like kfc, I could bathe in the gravy but their chips are fucking heinous.

I'd forgotten all about still fanta, it was lush

cowgirlsareforever · 29/06/2017 17:35

My issue with McDonald's is the sugar content. Their bread tastes really sweet to me which is I guess the reason why children really like it. Even their ketchup seems much sweeter than ordinary ketchup.

EssentialHummus · 29/06/2017 17:46

I'm another one who wants a burger from BK, a wing from KFC and fries from McDonald's. I can find two of the three near enough in my corner of London, but never all three

AndTakeYourHorseWithYou · 29/06/2017 17:47

They use heinz. It IS normal ketchup. It's your pre concieved bias showing is all.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/06/2017 17:49

I would assume that they would have been done by the advertising standards people by now if the information on their website was misleading?

Here at McDonald’s UK we use whole cuts of 100% beef from the forequarter and flank with just a pinch of salt and pepper added after cooking.

We’re proud of the suppliers we use and we won’t work with anyone who does not adhere to our own high standards of animal welfare, as well as those required by UK and EU legislation.

I adore macdonalds but rarely indulge as I live too far away from one. However what I've noticed is every single time I have a quarter pounder burger ( not with relish just cheese) within minutes I get a severe pain in my abdomen and have to rush to a toilet where I have awful loose stools. So sorry TMI! I have no issues with any foods usually. I swear there is something apart from 100% beef, no other meats affect me.
To answer your question OP, yanbu

AndTakeYourHorseWithYou · 29/06/2017 18:24

I swear there is something apart from 100% beef

There isn't.

ForalltheSaints · 29/06/2017 18:51

If you don't want to see other children or adults continue to be obese, then you should not go there.

Passthecake30 · 29/06/2017 18:54

I think it's fine, but is it a big enough meal?

I'd probably give an apple in the car on the way home to add some vitamins and ease the guilt

Keepingupwiththejonesys · 29/06/2017 18:57

Its not him not knowing what a chicken nugget is that made.me lol, more his supposed response. Every child I know of that age when given food, whether that know what it is or not will do one of about four things

  1. Just eat it
  2. Give the face (we all know it) and not touch it.
  3. Try a bit then leave it
  4. Possibly ask what a certain part is (the chicken nugget in this case) and then decide whether to try it or not.

Not look perplexed and say 'Auntie, I don't know what this is' . still lmfao about it now. Are you seriously telling me he's never seen a chip or fry either or whatever else.was.in there. I just don't believe his response was what you said

HappyFlappy · 29/06/2017 19:23

this is absolute horseshit

Yep - there's probably that in there, too.

FlamingoPrincess1212 · 29/06/2017 19:27

It's fine.
We didn't have a McDonald's in between swimming and home as a child. We did have a chip shop and my sister and I would share two jumbo saveloys in hot dog rolls two fish cakes and four portions of chips sat in the car on the way home.
None of us have ever been bigger than a size eight except during their pregnancies. We still rxcersise several times a week. Your DC will be fine xx

FlamingoPrincess1212 · 29/06/2017 19:29

I should've said sisters - there were three, so four eating.
I'll highlight the plural so you don't just think it was two really greedy children, that'd be excessive

LovePeaceAndHarmony · 29/06/2017 19:40

@Keepingupwiththejonesys you don't have to believe that is what he said, that's entirely up to you.

Every child I know of that age when given food, whether that know what it is or not will do one of about four things...

I must stop you there, my child is not every child, so please don't account for him, the same way I would never account for someone else's child or tell their mother that I don't believe that's what their child said or did as I have no right to do that.

AndTakeYourHorseWithYou · 29/06/2017 19:44

If you don't want to see other children or adults continue to be obese, then you should not go there

This comment doesn't even make sense.

TheEagle · 29/06/2017 19:51

This thread is bonkers, particularly in light of the honey-for-breakfast thread.

I remember reading Fast Food Nation and being put off the meat in McDs but I think that's changed a lot.

I practically lived in McDonald's when I was pregnant with DS1. I was surprised he wasn't born holding for fistfuls of their fries.

We live far away from any McDs now. My DCs (3.5 and 2 yo twins) haven't eaten there. I'm sure they will eat there in time.

As long as your child is eating an overall healthy diet and being active then the occasional McDs isn't a big deal.

TheEagle · 29/06/2017 19:52

Oh and also I understood that their food was pre-cooked offsite and just heat treated at point of sale.

Is that true?

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 29/06/2017 19:58

she has a bun with gherkins and cheese and the chips. I feel a bit daft asking for it

Don't feel daft! A huge proportion of our orders are grill orders (what we call custom orders). We even have gluten free customers who bring their own bread for us to use for the burgers.

Also the poster who works there, what the fuck happened to still Fanta?! Do you know who made the shitty decision to stop it?

I don't know, I'm afraid!

the only still juice they have now is shitty berry flavoured Oasis

That's not true! We have Tropicana (orange juice) and blackcurrent fruit shoot.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 29/06/2017 20:00

Okay this deserves its own post. This is categorically not true:

It used to be all lips, nostrils and bumholes, - still 100% beef lips, nostrils and bumholes, though. I don't know if things have changed, but any meat product can be included, and this means eyeball, skin, veins - if it grows on a cow, it's 100% beef by the standards of the industry.

It's largely mechanically-recovered meat - gristle etc - which is washed off the bones using high pressure hoses, shovelled up, chopped and shredded, coloured and chemically-flavoured, and shaped into meat-like stuff.

Incorrect. McDonalds uses high quality whole cuts of meat - no gristle or anything like that.

Please don't spout about something you know nothing about.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 29/06/2017 20:04

Oh and also I understood that their food was pre-cooked offsite and just heat treated at point of sale.

Is that true?

Yes, that's true. All comes in freezer bags, we defrost and then cook.

pourmeanotherglass · 29/06/2017 20:07

Fine if he likes McDonalds. Its only once a week.

AndTakeYourHorseWithYou · 29/06/2017 20:11

The burgers are NOT precooked, they are raw frozen and are cooked on site.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 29/06/2017 20:35

The burgers are NOT precooked, they are raw frozen and are cooked on site.

Yeah, sorry, that's what I meant! I've just come back from a ten hour shift there so my brain is in a bit of a fog Shock

hollieberrie · 29/06/2017 20:39

Its fine. I have Macdonalds 2-3 times a week. I go to the gym and I'm slim. I just reeeeally like the taste Grin. Lifes too short to worry about these things.
The coffee is also excellent.
