ATBU? Tories and DUP in favour of freezing public sector pay

AtHomeDadGlos · 28/06/2017 21:09

So, the Tories along with their cash rich friends the DUP have just voted down Labour's amendment (supported by every other MP) to end the public sector pay freeze.

So they can find £1bn to keep themselves in power but can't find anything to pay our firefighters, nurses, police force or teachers more?

TABU aren't they?

Oh yes. I forgot that the vacant post in my team of 3 has been deleted and muggings has to do 2 jobs.

Tw1nsetAndPearls · 28/06/2017 22:50

A Tory MP is bragging on twitter that the DUP bribe was a bargain as they have saved money on public sector pay. I suspect he was cheering loudly as he voted for the pay cap.

Tory MP Johnny Mercer even managed to give his own wife a pay rise...

Lismore no not in my local authority - you have to have an appraisal and perform one or more tasks 'above and beyond' you normal role - which given how utterly streached and under staffed we are is almost impossible unless you neglect you actual job

oh and when we reach the top of the pay scale it's almost impossible to get the 'perfect' appraisal score to move up - no one has yet in 7 years

Creampastry · 28/06/2017 22:57

Bunch of tossers ..... I hope next time they need help that they don't get it.

ghostyslovesheets · 28/06/2017 22:59

ExplodedCloud

my team - 27 staff down to 1.8 - it's manic - plus my coworker resigned after less than a year through stress so I've managed the past year on my own 'part time' hahahaha - it's bollox

Fab39ish · 28/06/2017 23:01

Yanbu. They are.

ExplodedCloud · 28/06/2017 23:01

It's just another kick in the teeth.

Robert Syms has just retweeted a tweet

Mind you he called a constituent a dick on twitter recently - he isn't known for his diplomacy - or having any interest in his constituency.

Well of course they were going to block it, they have a bunch of dinosaurs in Ireland that need paying!

Teresa May is despicable, she should be ashamed of herself and her party.
I feel like marching into my local MP's office tomorrow and demanding an explanation for this. Angry

MrsPorth · 28/06/2017 23:04

DUP are sitting pretty with their haul. Why should they care about firefighters. Scumbags.

ghostyslovesheets · 28/06/2017 23:07

it's utterly crap - I don't think people have an idea how bad it is - the public sector is near collapse - I work as part of SS - it's down to the bone - the LEA had a £17 MILLION cut over the last few years - this is on top of an initial cut and a freeze in council tax -there is NOTHING in the pot to do anything but the basics

it's a shit storm coming - it's not going to help any of of vulnerable service users :(

My team was disbanded and they kept 1.8 of us on to cover the bare minimum - the bare minimum is really the work of 5 people min - plus the team I now work in is 2.5 staff down so I have also been added to their work - plus 2 other SS teams - all on 3 days a week

The sector is surviving on the compassion and goodwill of staff - some are working unpaid over time of around 20 hours a week - I often work weekends or evenings

when it collapses it wont be nice

PookieDo · 28/06/2017 23:07

It is almost like they want the voters to hate them... I'm not sure I get it. Like they have just concluded this is probably their last win for some years so had better make as much chaos as possible before handing over a hatred filled, bitter and angry electorate

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 28/06/2017 23:08

The vote was a political act by the Labour Party to cause an upset over the Queen's Speech. Consequently, no Tory MP would vote for it, whatever they thought as losing a vote on the Queen's Speech would have been a huge issue for the Government.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 28/06/2017 23:09

Can I point out that lots of private sector workers aren't getting pay rises either.

ghostyslovesheets · 28/06/2017 23:10

yes and that's also shit ... my last pay rise above inflation and not incremental was around 2009

AtHomeDadGlos · 28/06/2017 23:11

Is it unreasonable to call for a general strike of all public sector employees that are able to strike? Some day in mid July.

Imagine if all those who could walked out. Teachers, nurses, doctors (junior and consultants), firefighters, non essentials police officers (if they're allowed), bin men, council office workers, customs officials. It would seriously fuck over the country and show just how valuable they are.

OP posts:
ilovegin112 · 28/06/2017 23:12

Most private sector workers haven't had a pay rise in years, I have never seen on mn any weeping and wailing for them

AtHomeDadGlos · 28/06/2017 23:13

If you're a private worker you can apply to a new company in the same/similar sector.

You can't if you're a public employee.

OP posts:
ghostyslovesheets · 28/06/2017 23:13

also the government has little control over the private sector (although a min wage of £10 would help) but raising standards in public sector roles makes them tempting - causing private sector employers to have to compete - racing to the bottom helps no one

FriendPlease · 28/06/2017 23:13

Absolutely baffled, just cannot understand how things like this seem to be happening on nearly daily basis and still so many people resist change.

Graceflorrick · 28/06/2017 23:14

It's disgusting and dishonest, the situation makes me feel really very annoyed.
