AIBU?

to ask the MN Tory voters, what do you think of the DUP?

ssd · 26/06/2017 21:53

and how much do you know about them?

do you know about the cash for ash scandal?

do you think the GFA will be affected?

am curious to know what Tory voters think of this, am wondering how happy they are about this deal that's been done today.

I voted Conservative.

Unhappy with Theresa May calling an ekection when she didn't need to. She's done a fair few things wrong.

Would obviously prefer an alliance with libdem. That was never going to happen.

Therefore not 'happy' no, but prefer the conservatives in government any which way, than Jeremy Corbyn-not opposed to Labour in general but to Corbyn.

What exactly did you want the tories to do, magically go back in time and win the election by more seats?

Tories always jump first to thoughts of magic.

How about planning instead?

I was a reluctant Conservative voter, the best of a pretty crap bunch tbh, although I would vote Lib Dem and probably Green a LONG way before I'd ever vote for Labour. I voted to get us through Brexit and come out the other side in the best fiscal shape possible. And I do honestly believe that the Conservatives have the best skills to do that task compared to the current Labour party. (That doesn't make me evil or a monster, it makes me a responsible person who used her judgment and brain to come to a rational decision, like millions of other voters just did.)

I think the DUP are a pretty grim set of miserable idiots quite frankly. I think we had to deal with the [quite legitimate but not pleasant] devil to get anything done, or we'd be facing years of hung votes, hamstrung policies and tawdry pork barrel deals behind closed doors. At least we now know the cost of this deal is a billion, itemised, quid. Vs the 48/60/blank chequebook that was promised by Mr Corbyn.

Walking glad to provide you with entertainment. I was expressing my opinion.

Sorry if I don't fit the exact criteria for answering the question. I didn't realise mumsnet had become so strict.

I didn't say who I voted for.

I'm not saying that I'm a JC supporter but what I am saying is that the focus on how awful JC and Labour would be for Brexit and the country is laughable when we can see what the Tories have done over the last few years.

Just my opinion but if you want to report me for not being representative of the group that the question is aimed at then be my guest.

I voted Remain and Tory and would do again.

So, Teresa, there actually is a Magic Money Tree. But it's not going to be shaken for lowly public service workers like nurses, oh no it's not. However, if you're a cynical avaricious DUPer from Norn iron well let's see what we can do for you Arlene , how much would you like then ?
1.5 Billon ! no problemo.

Meant to add....
Close the door after you May, and hurry up and let someone with half a brain take over. Oh, shit, there isn't anyone who fits that description.
HELP!!

For the love of Mike: she is Theresa May. Teresa May was a star of porn films - and I read about that in the press, I have not seen her work Grin

its funny how most tory voters only seem able to defend TM by rubbishing JC

how about defending her with her politics?

or is that just being ridiculous?

Can we defend her by saying that the deal she's done with the DUP is probably the same as the deal that Labour would have done with them?
I am so hoping that Nigel Dodds releases details of the discussions that they had with Labour.
I think it's very funny that MN is so very quiet on the whole issue. It's almost as if some quarters don't want to be accused of calling the kettle black Wink

Labour may very well have made a similar deal, but that didn't happen at the time. I don't really view the argument of, 'well Labour would've done the same', as really relevant to the question that the OP posed? It's about how Tory voters feel now, with the deal that's been made now. I didn't even vote Tory and it's made me feel angry.

Are Tory voters happy/content/okay with the deal that has been made with the DUP?

Dh votes Tory - I am Lib Dem (much good that did me). He says anything to keep JC out of power as he can't imagine Labour in their current state being any better than the current Tory govt - mainly as he doesn't believe any of the financial incentives that JC is offering and as a business owner he doesn't see Labour as a party that works for business in this country. However, he's a nice bloke really (!) and would like a centrist left party like most people I know in RL.

It's the least worst. Better than Corbyn, and it's the party with the most votes in government.

Will anyone explain why a party in government with 11 million votes would be a better democratic outcome than a party in government with 13 million votes?

Report
walkingtheplank · 28/06/2017 22:17

SSD - you can't separate TM from JC. Voting is a choice between the options in front of you at the polling station. More people thought that TM was the best option. Some of those people weren't voting positively for TM but against JC.

As it happens, I thought TM had a corner of a PMQ session today.

Report
ssd · 28/06/2017 22:29

FWIW, I find it nothing short of pathetic so many voters voted for TM as they were so against JC. By all means vote tory if you believe in their manifesto/their views etc., but don't vote for someone you are half arsed interested in just to keep one man out, not even the labour party, just one man.

There's so many people saying here all they were interested in was keeping JC out of power, I find that so short sighted and downright stupid. Where I live the conservative posters locally said "Vote tory to keep her out" with a picture of Nicola Sturgeon. I took offense at the her, so demeaning and patronising, but there was nothing to promote the tory party, just get rid of her. The tory party seemed to run this election based on playing up voters hate for certain others, not fighting it on their own policies.

I just think that's wrong and under the belt.

Not well said ssd.

People should be able to vote for who they so wish without being called "pathetic".

If you ask a loaded and goady question OP, don't act all surprised when you piss people off.

I voted for the party I felt would do the best job, and against the party I thought would do the worst. Is that better for you?

I am not jumping hoops at the DUP deal, and I wouldn't vote for the DUP if I lived in a relevant constituency, but it is the best of a bad lot.

We now just have to get on with it. Much like bloody Brexit.

Why is this deal sometimes referred to as a £1bn deal and sometimes as £1.5bn? According to a Sky report there is "greater flexibility" over £500m already allocated to NI, but that doesn't seem to be extra money.

Also, I don't think the OP's question is a goady one, I think it's an interesting one. I don't see why it's assumed that if you support a political party you have to support everything they do. I have always voted Labour, but I don't support every single one of their policies, and they have done things in the past that I haven't been happy with.

So I wouldn't be massively thrilled if a hypothetical Labour government did a deal with either the DUP or (and this is unlikely for obvious reasons) Sinn Fein. I think there are worrying consequences for a deal with the DUP - not that they will attempt to abolish same sex marriage or anything like that, but simply in terms of the governance of Northern Ireland. It seems like a threat to an already fragile peace.

I can quite see that May doesn't have many options - the Lib Dems won't do a deal with her, so it's either do a deal with the DUP, try to plough on as a minority government hoping that she will be able to get some legislation through with the informal support of the smaller parties, or call another election. Obviously none of those are particularly attractive so she's gone for what seems to her to be the least bad option. But I think she might regret it.
