To have a small drink whilst pregnant?

PayingMyWayYouSay · 25/06/2017 17:48

I'm just about 20 weeks now. Baby fine. Lovely little boy.

DH and I going to the pub that sells food this evening. Would I be unreasonable to have 1, just 1, WKD with my food?

DH is extremely against it and starts protesting in full when I even mention drinking alcohol Blush

I tried to take a sip of his Fruity Cider today and there was a lot of "Why would you do that?"

He thinks it's harmful and isn't worth a marginal risk.

I know it's my body but it is his baby too so I think he's entitled to express his feelings.

Surely 1. Something unit is okay with food?

It won't be a regular thing, it's just something I fancy.

I personally wouldn't do it

pinkyredrose · 25/06/2017 17:51

YABU for considering WKD. Have a glass of wine!

Algebraic · 25/06/2017 17:51

Personally I think it's fine but many may disagree. I didn't have any until 20 weeks and then I've about 1/2 units every 2/3 weeks or so. Half flute of prosecco, quarter glass of wine... no spirits.
Though I've only done it in private or at friends houses as I have been worried about judgement from others!

Iambubbles86 · 25/06/2017 17:51

I imagine you will get a mix of answers here. I personally say go ahead, plenty of women have a glass of wine during pregnancy, an alcopop is nothing. That said, again I Dont see the point in 1 alcopop, might as well have a soft drink but that's just me. Also if you do is it worth the hassle your DH will give you? IMHO until the baby is outside your body you have "majority rules" except in case of severe risk to the baby, of which a singular drink is not!

BroomHandledMouser · 25/06/2017 17:53

YANBU - I personally think one is absolutely fine.

Throughout my pregnancies I had the occasional glass of red with a meal if we were out (and if my head was down the toilet!)

PayingMyWayYouSay · 25/06/2017 17:53

Thanks for the replies.

I don't like wine, gone off of it Blush

I want a WKD because I really like the taste, not because it's purely alcohol.

Lemonade just won't do today!

One is fine but why WKD, it is the devil's drink.

Sophiealice95 · 25/06/2017 17:54

How can you tell if one is ok though?

Migraleve · 25/06/2017 17:54

I can never understand why people do this. What's the need? Because you like the taste Confused

AvocadoLovingMamaOfOne · 25/06/2017 17:55

I personally wouldn't, and didn't while I was pregnant. It just wasn't worth the risk to me tbh.
However I also know a few people who did have the odd glass of wine while pregnant so I guess it's each to their own

Angelicinnocent · 25/06/2017 17:55

I'm sure it's absolutely fine but personally felt it wasn't worth the risk in case it wasn't absolutely fine.

oohhhhitshappening · 25/06/2017 17:55

It's fine, after 20 weeks i used to have the odd WKD with a meal. Baby was fine. Enjoy!

sparechange · 25/06/2017 17:56

Read a book called Expexting Better - it is the science behind all the pregnancy advice

Looking at all the studies into drinking when pregnant, they conclude there is no meaningful risk in having a couple of drinks a week in the second and third trimesters

(Will dig out the actual book and find their quote...)

DearMrDilkington · 25/06/2017 17:56

Go for it.

It really won't cause any harm.

JaniceBattersby · 25/06/2017 17:57

If you want one drink, have one drink.

If your husband feels so strongly that you should stop drinking then I think he should also stop drinking to support you.

NicolasFlamel · 25/06/2017 17:57

In the nicest way there isn't much point asking on here. You'll have people very much against it and people who say it's fine. You know the advice, decide for yourself what level of risk is acceptable for you.

WonderLime · 25/06/2017 17:57

You will be fine with one drink. The guidance has always been 1-2 units a week until very recently, and there's no evidence to support the change to not drinking.

However, YABU to even consider an alcopop! Wink

FourForYouGlenCoco · 25/06/2017 17:58

YABU for drinking WKD if you're over about 15, but YANBU for thinking it won't do any harm. I drank when pg with both DC - couple of small glasses of champagne at a celebration at about 16w with DC1. And quite a lot with DC2 (at an xmas party at 9w and thought I was miscarrying, so drowned my sorrows!) - 2 lovely healthy kids. And never touched a drop with any of my 3 MCs. A healthy foetus is surprisingly hard to damage. Just don't make a habit of it OP, but one (or even two!) will be fine.

BoraThirch · 25/06/2017 17:58

So long as its under 2 units I'd say its fine.

PurpleDaisies · 25/06/2017 17:59

Will you enjoy it or feel guilty?

The evidence that one occasional drink causes harm just isn't there so I'd have no hesitation in having one but if you won't enjoy it there's no point.

Namechange2837 · 25/06/2017 17:59

The NHS safe limit is NONE. Why would you even do that?! You're growing a human life in your body ffs. Why even have 'one'? Just have a j20 or something else. Wtf

ArchieStar · 25/06/2017 18:00

What namechange said. Just my opinion though.

PayingMyWayYouSay · 25/06/2017 18:00

If your husband feels so strongly that you should stop drinking then I think he should also stop drinking to support you.

I can't say this seems fair since when I'm not pregnant, I don't drink other than the odd WKD - of which I drink because I like the taste of and only have 1 or 2.

DH likes a drink. I'm not a drinker, as such, to expect him to stop to support me

29 weeks here and not a big drinker at all, but had half a glass of Prosecco at a dinner the other week. As an occasional thing in 2nd/3rd tri I'd say it's fine.

sparechange · 25/06/2017 18:01

There is a whole chapter on it but these two pages pretty much sum it up

Hope you can read them ok - might need to zoom in!
