To think it's not normal for an 18 year old to play video games on their day off? Mine doesn't move!

OP posts:
sillyswimmer · 25/06/2017 15:31

I go away for weekends quite regularly and my DP, who's 46, spends most of the time I'm away gaming. He enjoys it so why not?

RedPeppers · 25/06/2017 15:32

That's was to Bear
Xpost with lot of other people. I don't type quickly enough.

TheHeraldOfAndraste · 25/06/2017 15:36

Tali you are my kinda person. Im on my 4th playthrough with a Cullen romancing mage Lavellan.

I also approve of your list. But no dishonored 2?

GlitterRoseGold · 25/06/2017 15:39

I know 30 year olds who do this

Unadon · 25/06/2017 15:41

EastMidsMummy He met us IRL - there's a difference there. We've always all been talking either through text chat or voice comms, so that's hardly not being social.

RedPeppers My apologies for my previous post; sometimes tone doesn't come off very well on screen, and I took your post to be a lot harsher than you probably intended it to, sorry.

My main point there, is that gaming can be a platform that eventually leads to actual human relationships (which in the case of my mate, is him meeting and getting married to someone he met in the game) so it isn't all doom and gloom. I do see now that you were making the distinction between people who use it as a substitute for life instead of a complement to their life, in which case I agree with you.

Everything in moderation is key, IMO. And again, my apologies for not reading properly.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 25/06/2017 15:49

Oh yeah, Herald I played Dishonored 2. Forgot about that one. Knew there were more.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 25/06/2017 15:54

Better than lots of other hobbies and totally normal.

Megbert · 25/06/2017 15:54

My 29-year-old husband has spent the best part of his Sunday riding around on a polar bear, fighting enemies for a scroll (or something).

It's what tickles his pickle.

He doesn't make fun of my trashy Real Housewives obsession much so I leave his gaming alone.

Bluntness100 · 25/06/2017 15:59

My husband is 51 and can spend hours gaming in the evening if nothing on tv. My daughter is 19 and she can spend whole days gaming. I don't like it, for some reason it gives me motion sickness, as it does my father. It doesn't impact their social lives but if they have time free they do like to game. I think it's totally normal these days.

RortyCrankle · 25/06/2017 16:02

I've just logged out of Elder Scrolls Online to get something to eat and have a read of MN - I'm in my 70s - it's perfectly normal.

Nanny0gg · 25/06/2017 16:07

Ok - anyone want to recommend some games that don't involve car chases or fighting?

I used to like platform games or city building back in the day - anything similar around now?

Ecclesiastes · 25/06/2017 16:09

But what happens when works isnt there anymore? And your friends have drifted away because gaming was more important?

Sounds like bliss. If I didn't have to work for a living I'd spend all my time on my solitary hobbies, which include - but are not limited to - gaming.

Reading, walking, gardening, drawing & painting, sewing, birdwatching...ALL of these are best done alone, imvho.

People need different levels of human interaction, something extroverts never understand. And if the only reason you are socialising is as a kind of insurance policy against loneliness in your old age, you are barking up a very wobbly tree.

Megbert · 25/06/2017 16:14

I wonder if you know my DH, Rorty? :o

I think he's called Wee Mad something or other at the moment.

Bubblesagain · 25/06/2017 16:17

City skylines is basically the same as citybuilder but better graphics etc (it's currently down from 20odd quid to 5 on steam)and just bought planetcoaster, similar type vibe but your creating a theme park rather the a towns, prison architect another good builder one.

Salemthecat · 25/06/2017 16:17

It's supposed to stop at 16? I better tell my dad, he's 56 and still loves his PlayStation.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 25/06/2017 16:19

Of course it's normal. DH and I are nearly 30 and spend all our days off playing video games; so do the majority of our friends.

It's a hobby like any other. It's no less valid than playing football or gardening or singing.

Bubblesagain · 25/06/2017 16:20

*oops ignore better graphics comment I mixed up citybuilding games with thinking you were playing an old game that I thought was called city builder but After a Google realised it wasn't even named that. Blush

TaurenInAChinaShop · 25/06/2017 16:22

Today, I've done family stuff (been to the cinema, done some washing), some work stuff (made some jewellery, done some networking), and pootled about with pvp in wow. It's all about balance isn't it?

Also Firefly is awesome.

Loads of MNrs play wow - there was a MN guild for a while called Nest of Vipers Grin not sure if it's still going.

(and while I'm typing this, I'm between FPs in wow, and DP and DC are xboxing together, and judging by the shrieking, having a great time)

HappyLabrador · 25/06/2017 16:23

Give your poor 18 year old a break! It's perfectly normal!

I often spend a day gaming, most often on the hated-on-MN GTA online. I love it. I'm a 38 year old mother of two children (who, incidentally, also enjoy gaming).

Rorty You sound awesome!

CaptainHammer · 25/06/2017 16:24

Another 28 year old that plays a lot of Xbox here. Also regularly book days off work to play games. I also spend whole days reading so hopefully that balances it out for you OP Hmm

"People need different levels of human interaction, something extroverts never understand."
Yes yes yes Ecclesiastes

Tiare · 25/06/2017 16:25

Sometimes they partake of alcohol, fraternise with "friends" and wear clothing that differs in style and taste to our own.

For fuck's sake OP, have you ever met a teenager? Or been one? You sound like you flew in from the 1800s. Should your kid ever say "My mother doesn't understand me" s/he wouldn't be far off.

notarehearsal · 25/06/2017 16:30

I can sort of see where you're coming from op. My dc are a little older but actually didn't play on consoles. They had friends and, you know, they went out socialising at 18 and saw friends when they had free time. I've also fostered teens and very few wanted to sit alone playing on consoles when there's a real world out there

GamingnameC · 25/06/2017 16:31

GamingnameC If you have a mega drive, you are fucking adopting me!
Late reply as been playing portal2 Grin
We did have one but it died when it go dropped down the stairs Blush planning on getting another one soon, so will get the adoption papers over soon Grin

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 25/06/2017 16:34

I eagerly await them, Gaming I remember days of playing Sonic, Cool Spot, Toe Jam and Earl, Road Rash and Echo the Dolphin.

Cities Skylines is brilliant. Very in depth and a good challenge in terms of traffic control etc! Reduced on Steam at the moment :)
