to ask if you don't have a landline?

We have the possibility of going on board with a new internet provider and they don't require you to have a landline.

We're not sure of the costs as yet because they are finishing off installation at our complex but Dh said we may aswell not have one - we have mobiles which have unlimited calls and texts. I immediately said no we need a landline. But after thinking about it, we don't. People call us on our mobiles generally. The only person/s who call the landline are my Mum and his Mum one in a frozen over hell.

So. Do you not have a landline and does it matter if you don't?

I technically have a landline because it was included in the broadband package - when I looked all the ones that didn't need a landline, which were the fibre optic ones, were more expensive than standard broadband&landline. However I don't have a phone plugged into it and have never used it.

The only time I miss it are when I lose my phone and want to ring it to find it (happens way too much!) and the very odd occasion when I want to ring a company and know I will be on hold for ages and will cost me a lot on mobile/use up loads of minutes, whereas landlines would be free/cheap.

malmi · 21/06/2017 17:35

The landline is great for when you want to speak to someone who you know is home but aren't answering their mobile (left on silent / out of earshot)

Fluffyears · 21/06/2017 18:00

We have one and only MIL calls it all the fucking time jeez . When we moved and it was a two week wait to get line installed she was practically having kittens at the thought of not being able to call us to tell us what she had for dinner (we do her shopping and aren't interested if she had a shite Aldi pizza or shite Aldi ready meal tbh). DP said 'use my mobile' she then thought she could only call a mobile from a mobile. Now she has learned you don't she'll call landline every 15 minutes and if no answer then she calls DP's mobile again every 15 minutes until she gets an answer. I never answer the landline as I know it's her.

LadyDeadpool · 21/06/2017 18:06

We have one, can't afford contract mobile phones and we keep a corded handset next to the port in case of emergencies where a mobile or cordless phone would be unusable.

I always feel a little defensive on this sort of thread as it makes me feel out of touch with the youth despite only being 31 Grin we do have mobile phones but can rarely afford to top them up.

Topseyt · 21/06/2017 18:14

We need one because mobile signal is so flaky round here and I regularly have to work from home.

SnobblyBobbly · 21/06/2017 18:16

I unplugged mine about 7 years ago. It turned out that our number used to be for a local florist so every christmas/valentines/Mother's Day we'd get extra calls on top of the PPI calls at home, while friends and family were ringing my mobile - it had to go!

firawla · 21/06/2017 18:17

We have one that came with our tv and internet but its not had a phone plugged into it for about 4 years. I'd happily not have one

QueenLaBeefah · 21/06/2017 18:22

Unplugged my landline phone about 4 yrs ago as I was sick to death having numerous cold calls every day. Haven't missed it.

Brittbugs80 · 21/06/2017 18:25

We have one. My mom calls me on it as she doesn't have a mobile. Also my 9 year old knows to dial 999 on it if needed in an emergency.

Pumpkinnose · 21/06/2017 18:49

Not had one for over 10 years and not missed it once. Just make sure you've got good mobile signal. Easy saving.

specialsubject · 22/06/2017 20:33

Horses for courses. Not out of touch to have tech that works.

£22 a month gets me unlimited broadband and unlimited calls, without farting about with a fragile brickphone that needs daily charging. Weekly charge small mobile for texts and to be contactable out of the house, about £20 of top up a year. Probably wouldn't do different even if there was mobile signal in the house. But there never will be.

Iamastonished · 22/06/2017 21:18

We have a landline for many reasons:

OH is self-employed, and having a landline and a mobile projects a more professional image
Mobile reception in our house isn’t great
We get our broadband through the landline
We have elderly relatives that use our landline number as a the default phone number
I don’t carry my mobile around with me all the time and I can hear the landline phone wherever I am in the house
The phone still works in a power cut
At busy times, like New Year, when all the mobile networks are jammed, the landline still works

“Love the surprise that the whole country doesn't have perfect mobile coverage!”

I agree Specialsubject All of you who are expressing surprise that some of us still have landlines are probably under 40 and live in areas that receive good mobile reception. Our village has only just had superfast broadband installed.

RoseVase2010 Satellite broadband can be affected by the weather and the signal quality isn’t as good as broadband from a landline.

I won’t be getting rid of the landline anytime soon. We are TPS registered and get very few nuisance calls. Even the ones from overseas have ceased.

minesapintofwine · 22/06/2017 21:22

I have one and use it regularly. My mobile hasn't worked for about a month and I've not been too bothered. I'm 35 and don't feel out of touch, just not overly interested in technology.

Chewiecat · 22/06/2017 21:55

Haven't had a landline in years! Don't need it

Iamastonished · 22/06/2017 22:08

The UK is so backward in its mobile service provision. If we had the coverage that many other countries had there would be no need for any household to have a landline, but we will continue to keep our landline for the reasons I have given above for the foreseeable future.

cricketballs · 22/06/2017 22:13

We pay for a landline (only way we can get broadband as we live in the sticks) but haven't had a phone plugged in for years

specialsubject · 23/06/2017 09:58

Broadband without landline means fibre to the door, ( no private company is going to do that outside densely populated areas , satellite ( pricey) or mobile ( pricey and not everywhere).

For those of us outside the big cities, landline remains cheapest.

Iamastonished · 23/06/2017 10:32

Indeed special. I suspect all those posting who think all landline users are dinosaurs (true in my case Grin) live in London or other densely populated areas, or places that have fabulous mobile reception.

specialsubject · 23/06/2017 11:06

it isn't an age thing, either. I know quite a lot of people who are seventy plus, and several of those are mobile only. Many more are dedicated ipad users too.

When I am out with my mobile, I'm either driving, so can't use it, or in a public place where I don't particularly want to carry on a long conversation and certainly not one about anything private. So it really is only for quick calls, texts, and emergency contact. Back in the day when I was in an office, the things were a pain as people didn't carry them around so we were plagued with ringing mobiles. Oh, the temptation to drop them in a cup of tea... I hope that at least has changed.

Iamastonished · 23/06/2017 11:59

We have to have mobiles on silent at work. Like you, I only use mine as emergency contact as I much prefer the sound quality of a landline.

Deathraystare · 23/06/2017 12:12

Nope no landline. Managing fine without the added expense, to be honest.

We technically have one, but it's been unplugged for years now (it costs us nothing extra). We worked out from 2012 to 2014 we didn't use it to call anyone and we didn't get a single call on it not from a telemarketer. Haven't once missed it since we unplugged it.

lanbro · 23/06/2017 12:35

Haven't had a landline for years, we recently had one installed for free as part of our broadband deal but no phone attached to it!

melj1213 · 23/06/2017 12:47

I have a landline but I almost never use it - it came with the broadband package and I have a cordless handset that is just never charged up.

The only time I use it is when I have to call companies and don't want to drain my mobile or if companies insist on a number when signing up for something and it's not one that I want to be contacted by,
