to ask if you don't have a landline?

We have the possibility of going on board with a new internet provider and they don't require you to have a landline.

We're not sure of the costs as yet because they are finishing off installation at our complex but Dh said we may aswell not have one - we have mobiles which have unlimited calls and texts. I immediately said no we need a landline. But after thinking about it, we don't. People call us on our mobiles generally. The only person/s who call the landline are my Mum and his Mum one in a frozen over hell.

So. Do you not have a landline and does it matter if you don't?

I didn't think u could get broadband without a line. It took a month to get a line installed when we moved into our rental and I really struggled without internet. I had to top up data in my phone so many times as kids kept using it.

Our landline is a waste as only my mum calls it and we never actually know where the cordless is as it's out of battery most of the time. She just gives me a missed call on my mobile now n I call her back as she has a pay as u go. And I have unlimited minutes

noenergy · 21/06/2017 10:45

What companies offer broadband only?

CheshireChat · 21/06/2017 10:52

If you get satellite broadband they don't always provide landlines, a local one for us in the NE is connexin, but we've had loads of issues with them.

RoseVase2010 · 21/06/2017 10:58

We don't get phone signal in our house so it gets used a fair bit. If we had good mobile coverage we could drop it.

silkpyjamasallday · 21/06/2017 10:58

I've not had a landline since I left my parents house 4 years ago. Mobiles have made them redundant really as it's not more expensive to call on a mobile anymore . I hate talking on the phone though, and have had my mobile switched off for months, it's liberating being uncontactable. All family live within walking distance though so if anyone really needed me they could come and find me quite easily. DP is the first port of call though as he actually uses his phone.

Louiselouie0890 · 21/06/2017 10:59

Nope waste of money

specialsubject · 21/06/2017 10:59

Calling to a mobile from a landline can be very expensive, although several companies now include calls to UK mobiles in their inclusive package. Not BT though, used by many seniors - so be aware.

streetface · 21/06/2017 11:02

Nope. Only got PPI, sales and scam calls on it. Binned it off and never been happier. I like to see who's calling and switch my mobile off if I don't fancy speaking to anyone. Landlines are just intrusive nowadays.

MrsD79 · 21/06/2017 11:04

I have a landline which i cud do without as tbe only people who use it are the call centres! Don't need it.

unicorn5629 · 21/06/2017 11:54

I have a landline... it's my personal "mum line" she's the only one who rings it...

FrenchJunebug · 21/06/2017 12:32

no landline here either and I do not miss it.

FrenchJunebug · 21/06/2017 12:33

My parents in France have taken to skyping me.

specialsubject · 21/06/2017 12:43

Almost all landlines are now on the scammer list as there are no new numbers - so numbers get recycled. The tps is toothless and has no power over India anyway.

However with the crapness and expense of mobiles, and the delight of a call blocker box, I will be keeping my landline. Even if we did have reception mobiles are still crap, get so many cutouts and poor signals when I talk to people on theirs.

ChoccyJules · 21/06/2017 13:41

When we had Sky the calls were free but on Virgin only weekend ones are free. So we've been bitten by calling the Mums back on the landline during the week without (me) realising this.
Hence we now want to lose it altogether but I'm waiting for DH to sort himself a better mobile deal as he claims landline is still cheaper for him to ring his Mum, as his allowance won't stretch to her epic chats.

specialsubject · 21/06/2017 13:44

All companies include weekend calls in line rental, they have to. Upgrading to anytime calls to landlines is £8 a month, and plusnet and sky include calls to mobiles in this. Others may do the same, except BT who definitely don't.

All calls limited to an hour, keep an eye and redial if getting close.

Non inclusive calls do cost a bomb.

SoyUnPerdedor2 · 21/06/2017 13:46

I haven't had a landlines for .any years.
Mobiles come with loads of free minutes.
I have the EE mobile data box thing for Internet.
Almost as good as broadband, and totally portable.

MistressPage · 21/06/2017 14:59

We unplugged our landline when I was pregnant and people kept phoning and waking me up to ask if I'd given birth. Not plugged it in since. (Several years) I prefer mobile where you can see who is calling before you decide whether to answer...

KoalaDownUnder · 21/06/2017 15:12

No landline for well over 10 years.

TBH, I'm more surprised these days when someone does have one.

hibbledobble · 21/06/2017 15:28

I don't have one. It annoys me when I've lost my phone and can't use a landline to ring it.

specialsubject · 21/06/2017 15:39

Landlines have caller I d so you can see who is calling.

Love the surprise that the whole country doesn't have perfect mobile coverage! I am more surprised when a mobile works as generally I dont expect that they will.

ChocolateRaisin09 · 21/06/2017 15:39

We don't have a landline or a TV licence. Our parents think we're crazy Grin
Don't need a landline at all!

TheNaze73 · 21/06/2017 15:50

Haven't had a landline since 2005

INeedANameChange · 21/06/2017 15:59

I have a landline but no phone which renders it rather useless!

FavouriteWasteofSlime · 21/06/2017 16:01

We have one, in that the plug is there and it works but we don't have a phone plugged in it as we would never use it.

OrangeFluff · 21/06/2017 16:04

Same Chocolate. No landline (well we do for broadband, but no phone plugged in) or TV licence since I moved out of my Mums over 8 years ago. People find the lack of TV licence strangest out of the two though.
