to ask if you don't have a landline?

We have the possibility of going on board with a new internet provider and they don't require you to have a landline.

We're not sure of the costs as yet because they are finishing off installation at our complex but Dh said we may aswell not have one - we have mobiles which have unlimited calls and texts. I immediately said no we need a landline. But after thinking about it, we don't. People call us on our mobiles generally. The only person/s who call the landline are my Mum and his Mum one in a frozen over hell.

So. Do you not have a landline and does it matter if you don't?

Technically I do but it's only for broadband I dont own a phone except my mobile, and I don't know the landline number

PeaFaceMcgee · 20/06/2017 17:21

Landline, obvs, not landlord.

If we could get stable and fast mobile broadband that would also work somehow on streaming stuff to the TV, we wouldn't put a line into a new build.

So it utterly depends on mobile internet coverage in the particular area.

cjt110 · 21/06/2017 09:33

Disappointed6789 the company is called Hyperoptic. On looking, it's only something like £2 a month different with/without

aubreydear · 21/06/2017 09:33

I haven't had one for about 8 years.

CountryCaterpillar · 21/06/2017 09:38

Weve wondered this but...

It doesn't seem any cheaper without a landline.

My nan was the only one who used to call me on it. (Sadly passed)

What if you break your phone?

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 21/06/2017 09:40

I have a landline. Signal is shit in this village.

snoopypoodle · 21/06/2017 09:41

The only reason we have a landline is because we live in an area where our house gets no mobile signal indoors (we tried all networks), so if we're in no one used to be able to get in touch with us. Otherwise we wouldn't have bothered having a landline installed.

specialsubject · 21/06/2017 09:42

£20 a month all in for fibre broadband? Gosh that's cheap, I thought - except when you click on the link the price doubles to £40.

Good luck if even their advertising is dodgy...

jay55 · 21/06/2017 09:44

My building has Hyperoptic and so I don't have a land line. Use FaceTime or texting. In their slowest speed package and it feels faster than anything I've had before.

AmenacingWhistle · 21/06/2017 09:46

I haven't had a landline for 10 years. I changed my Internet provider a year ago and the landline is included but I haven't bothered to get a phone for it. I don't even know what the number is.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 21/06/2017 09:46

Haven't had one for years. I don't think many of my friends and family have either now. Because of this general change you'll find for credit purposes a mobile number is quite adequate.

Nakedavenger74 · 21/06/2017 09:47

Gavin g a landline is absolutely critical if you want constant cold calls from people wanting access to your bank account.

I haven't had one for 17 years. What's the point?

cjt110 · 21/06/2017 09:51

jay55 Thats good to know. They're in the early stages of installation but I think we're likely to jump ship. We're with Sky and are lucky to get 2mb if that!

OP posts:
caffeinestream · 21/06/2017 09:51

We have one - only because I have relatives overseas who don't use Facebook/Skype/Facetime and it's the only way we can keep in touch.

I never answer it though!

BabsGanoush · 21/06/2017 09:52

DH keeps suggesting we get rid of ours but for some reason I feel safe having an alternative form of contact. I don't always hear my phone as I'm the older generation whereby my mobile isn't glued to my hand 24/7.

Ecureuil · 21/06/2017 09:58

Haven't had one since DH and I moved in together 8 years ago.

cjt110 · 21/06/2017 09:59

I never have my mobile sound switched on. Although it's usually near me but I don't like having it ringing or beeping away. I suppose thats what I am concerned about if we didnt have a landline. My phone has unlimited minutes but my Mum's doesnt. So this would mean I would be relied upon as the caller... Not that that matters but it just irks me a little.

OP posts:
Ecureuil · 21/06/2017 10:06

I don't have my mobile glued to me either Smile. I don't particularly mind if I don't hear my mobile, I can call them back.

SovietKitsch · 21/06/2017 10:11

We have a landline because we work from home a lot and the mobile signal is shit - I sometimes have none at all and it is certainly not reliable enough for a work phone call.

ImNotShpanishImEgyptshun · 21/06/2017 10:12

Virgin do broadband only, which is what we have. I don't think it's any cheaper though. Haven't required a landline since my parents moved back from Spain 5 years ago. Credit rating is fine!

KoolKoala07 · 21/06/2017 10:12

Nope not had one for years. Don't miss it at all. All we ever got were ppi calls when we did have one.

BangkokBlues · 21/06/2017 10:16

No land line.

Don't miss it. Can't think of anything I've needed a land line for in years.

IHeartDodo · 21/06/2017 10:30

I had one for a year as a postgrad student, and the only people who called were my friend's mum and scam calls (PPI, car accident etc).
Drove me mental as I was in most often throughout the day, and had to run down from the second floor when the phone rang!
Not had one for years now, and don't miss it.

IHeartDodo · 21/06/2017 10:31

Also I mostly use whatsapp and skype rather than proper text and call, as my family are mostly abroad, so it wouldn't be much use anyway!

RiversrunWoodville · 21/06/2017 10:38

Another with a landline needed for broadband (live in the arse end of nowhere for phone companies) but haven't had a phone plugged in for years only ever got cold calls or scroungers (think people who think veg should be free as they once knew dhs mum/ granny) and don't miss it
