Me, DP and Birth Control

I recently had the birth control implant removed because I was getting two periods a month, I had tried having a new one fitted as my GP didn't know whether it was me or because the implant was coming to the end of its life.

I've since gone on to the pill, Celeste to be precise and have noticed that despite being just as active and eating just as well as I normally do, I'm putting on weight and really struggling to shift it; I had previously lost just under three stone and was finally in a place where I was happy with the way I looked, now I've put back on the best part of a stone and cannot get rid of it for love nor money. I mentioned this to DP and said that I was thinking about coming off of the pill because I can't deal with the weight gain and the mental state that then puts me in and said that after doing a lot of research I don't really want to have to take anything as I think it's the change in hormones causing all the issues; DP's first response was to become irate about the fact that this was massively going to affect our sex life and that he felt I was being selfish.

I guess I'm asking AIBU by not wanting it to be my responsibility as when it is I'm the one that has to deal with the changes that happen to my body not him, I've gained weight, my skin is breaking out more than ever and it's tearing my self esteem to pieces.

Any advice?

Good luck finding a method that works for you and don't let HCP push you into something you don't want. Appointments can be cancelled and you can still use condoms in the short term.

Having said that, I love my copper coil. I forget it's in there most of time and it didn't hurt going in- I have a really low pain threshold and didn't get anaesthetic. The downside is my heavy period is back, but luckily it's manageable and it was my choice.

As PPs have said, you should be able to get condoms free from the NHS, but if not, buying condoms in bulk makes them a lot cheaper than off the shelf. Also, don't forget, there's a range of sizes and thicknesses so it's worth exploring to find ones that feel better than others.

I love my copper coil as well, just as another data point. First few months of periods were noticeably heavier, then it pretty much went back to normal: period is slightly longer and I get spotting at the beginning, that's about it. I can't do hormones at all (even Mirena) so it's a good option for me.

Good luck with finding something that really works for you.

I must say I'm still not especially impressed with his line about being too hasty and needing to give your body more time to adjust. By all means slag condoms from dawn to dusk, that's more than fair enough, but he needs to stay in his lane wrt hormonal contraception.

Also I wonder about a cap OP? As other posters have mentioned. I've never used one myself, as hormonal has actually suited me fine, but the couple of women I know who use them absolutely love them. My aunt had one for years and even post-menopause still sings their praises at every opportunity.
