To bake a cake with DD and take it to the mosque?

I know it's a tiny gesture in the grand scheme of things. But I thought maybe baking a cake for the worshippers to eat when they break their fast tonight might be a nice idea? We live a couple of minutes away.

It's just, in other terrorist attacks, there is an immediate outpouring of love and support. Athough it's early, there seems to be a lot less today. Coupled with the biased media reporting. Thought it might be a nice way of showing solidarity and love.

But are they going to be in mourning? Does it seem patronising? I'll absolutely accept if I am BU, please don't flame me.

Haven't read the entire thread, but I think that is a lovely gesture and would be much appreciated.

Atenco · 20/06/2017 04:21

Gosh I think it's very patronizing and I would not be impressed. It just seems as if you want to be subservient and smarmy

The Muslims I know are not anything like as complicated as isadoradancing123. They see kindness for what it is.

Cheese straws - really simple.

Go to shop and buy

1 packet of ready rolled puff pastry (check it is vegi but the main manufacturer is)
1 jar of dijon mustard
one pot of grated parmesan

defrost the pastry - in this heat it won't take long
cover a baking sheet in foil or grease one
lay out the pastry in one piece and score it into strips of just less than an inch
get a knife and 'butter' the pastry with the mustard - just a thin layer
sprinkle with the Parmesan
put in the oven for 15 mins (oven on obviously but you said you are a terrible baker)

allow to cool and 'snap' the pastry in to straws.

Bishy good on you and your friend. Really a lovely thing to do.

starfleet · 20/06/2017 08:46

MrsPeely - you have more restraint than me.

I do try to ignore the negativity but sometimes you have to respond even though you know you're basically pissing against the wind.

Subservient cake Grin

Ahh that did make me chuckle.

originalbiglymavis · 20/06/2017 09:20

I'd see the lemon drizzle as the most subservient the the cakes... Chocolate fudge is the naughty one.

brexitstolemyfuture · 20/06/2017 12:58

Be very careful with cheese straws and Parmesan as it won't be vegetarian!

WattdeEll · 20/06/2017 13:18

Lovely gesture OP and great to see it has inspired others. I'm going to do this too, thought I'd take a hamper of fruit and sealed sweet treats plus some sweets for the children. Solidarity is so important.

BitOutOfPractice · 20/06/2017 15:23

"oven on obviously but you said you are a terrible bake"

Grin

Sash I know I said I was a terrible baker but even I know you need to put the oven on. I'm actually a good cook. Just a bad baker!

madhea · 20/06/2017 17:35

I'm Muslim and I think that's a lovely considerate idea in testing times. Who doesn't ❤️ Cake xx

impossible · 20/06/2017 17:36

I think it's a lovely idea and will be taken as a gesture of support and kindness as intended.

If you need a little courage read this article. It's about muslims since Trump and clearly shows what a huge difference small gestures make to a community feeling under threat.

Good luck

impossible · 20/06/2017 17:37

I meant to say US muslims since Trump but just as pertinent I'm sure.

wizzywig · 20/06/2017 17:42

bishybarny quickly trademark your 'more in common' phrase. Its brilliant! Tea/ coffee and cake can really break down barriers and get people talking. That can go some way towards ending this 'them and us' feeling

Nousernamefound · 20/06/2017 17:42

Don't think it's a bad idea but you could google what is eaten at the end of a days fasting if you're unsure? What about some homemade lemonade? So hot might be refreshing x

BraayTigger · 20/06/2017 17:44

Such a lovely thoughtful idea :) think is very kind x

ILovedThe90s · 20/06/2017 17:45

Hi I haven't read all the thread but I think a cake is a wonderful idea. Everyday, people give food to the mosque and everyone eats together, so don't worry about dates or anything else like that as they'll have plenty. But a cake would be a lovely idea and would be very much appreciated. If you speak to them beforehand then you could join them for Iftar? I say speak beforehand as they might not have a ladies section, they don't at my local one, but if they do go join in! Xx

Maireadplastic · 20/06/2017 17:48

Our local mosque holds open days. There's always lots of cake there.....

IloveBanff · 20/06/2017 17:54

Nousernamefound the OP made and delivered the cake yesterday.

ImageQueen · 20/06/2017 18:05

To the person at the beginning of the thread that said shit idea...
You're horrible, nasty and would not know community spirit if it slapped you in the face!
I hope you don't need support after a tragedy!

SherbrookeFosterer · 20/06/2017 18:06

It's a lovely idea.

Alternatively boxes of dates or Lidl Baklava, if you can't get fresh:

Sunday is of course, end of Ramadam.

Blueflowers2011 · 20/06/2017 18:10

Live round the corner to where the recent incident happened.

I agree very little has been said in the media in terms of bringing people together. But they didn't have to, people here are standing together reagardless, all backgrounds, the community has been fantastic.

But only here.

Nice idea.

fullofhope03 · 20/06/2017 18:11

How incredibly kind and thoughtful of you OP! Bless you - Yes, absolutely take a cake, biscuits, whatever you fancy - I'm sure everyone will be rightly touched xxx

Burnett · 20/06/2017 18:12

Support for what? I think it is patronizing PC nonsense. I will help anyone anytime but this achieves nothing of relevance.

IloveBanff · 20/06/2017 18:15

THE OP MADE AND DELIVERED THE CAKE YESTERDAY.
