may couldn't have the decency to visit the victims of Grenfell tower ' due to security threat'
but HM the queen and Prince William were OK to show kindness to those effected.

No doubt someone made the decision, TM goes to see fire fighters and royal family meet the public

glueandstick · 16/06/2017 14:01

To be fair to her, people like Prince William and hate her.

Maudlinmaud · 16/06/2017 14:07

TM was booed as she entered the hospital, the Queen was also heckled when she spoke and met with people today. Anita McVeigh tried to talk over it but I heard.

Belindabelle · 16/06/2017 14:10

Call me Dave would have visited the victims. He would have been there in his chinos with open necked shirt and sleeves rolled up. Samantha by his side (for protection) looking all doe eyed and sympathetic in her 7/8th. Infant I believe that she was there yesterday giving out water etc.

makeourfuture · 16/06/2017 14:15

ascertaining which other buildings in the council housing stock may also be at risk and releasing funds for the homeless

Whatever the DUP/Tories are doing it is almost certainly not this.

Butteredparsnip1ps · 16/06/2017 14:15

I agree it's not right but doesn't anyone feel that corbyn is using this opportunity to look good... Or am I super cynical?

i'm inclined to agree Cadenza, the trouble is TM has made it easy for him to exploit her weaknesses.

And even if it were advisors that decided that the Queen meets the people whilst TM meets those in charge, you would expect her to have enough nouse to realise she needs to meet the people and be seen to meet the people.

NataliaOsipova · 16/06/2017 14:22

Well - given the bollocking Sajid Jarvid (the Communities and Local Government minister) got on the Today programme, I'm pretty sure this will have to go on. He was pretty specific about the assessment programme and the funding that had been made available.

Hissy · 16/06/2017 14:23

TM HAS to go. No confidence vote, surely?

Topseyt · 16/06/2017 14:26

I think she should have gone to speak to the survivors.

Jeremy Corbyn, Sadiq Khan, the Queen and Prince William have all done so. The security risks to them are the same as for the Prime Minister, surely.

She is a poor at communication. I don't think she is a natural for her public role, so she is probably scared. However, visiting people affected by such events goes with the territory of being Prime Minister.

quizqueen · 16/06/2017 14:27

While I can see that Corbyn is presenting himself as a man of the people far better than May, who seems to have few empathic social skills other than nice words, he would bankrupt the country in a few years if he were ever in office. His suggestion that the empty homes of the rich be given to someone they don't belong to is typical of his communist attitude. There are plenty of London Labour MPs who, I'm sure, have empty rooms but he is not suggesting they offer to house these now homeless people from Grenfell Tower. Also, many grandstanding Labour voting luvvies who are sticking their nose like Lily Allen are not offering accommodation either. I am not a Tory voter so not necessarily supporting them but Labour always think it is okay to use other people's money to pay for things.

Butteredparsnip1ps · 16/06/2017 14:29

I was just thinking the DUP would back her all the way given that they suddenly have an opportunity for power. I wonder though if any Tory MP's would vote against her to trigger a leadership contest?

BurnTheBlackSuit · 16/06/2017 14:31

It's not about media photos really. It's about the elected leader of the country going to listen to and talk to those who feel this tragedy as occurs because they were ignored by those in power. i.e. SHOWING that things must change, and not just continuing to ignore the residents.

JC might have been been there because it looks good to be there (although evidence suggests that he actually does care), but being there cynically or otherwise is always going to be better than not going at all.

And the DUP talks were suspended due to the Grenfell fire according to the media, so she certainly wasn't busy doing that.

OhGodWhatTheHellNow · 16/06/2017 14:33

I don't know, are we judging the effectiveness of our politicians by how well they emote in public now? I would rather have cold emotionless competence in a PM than the ability to comfort the bereaved.

(I'm not commenting on May's competence or otherwise, just the general principal.)

I would hope that TM would be too busy to be visting, what with setting up enquiries and making sure all the other tower blocks are checked...

IsabelleSE19 · 16/06/2017 14:33

I am not a Tory voter so not necessarily supporting them but Labour always think it is okay to use other people's money to pay for things.

So, quizqueen if the people need help and don't have any money, how do you help them without using other people's money?

TM comes across as having no empathy or backbone whatsoever. Corbyn is looking great by sheer virtue of just behaving like an ordinary human being.

BurnTheBlackSuit · 16/06/2017 14:34

I was just thinking the DUP would back her all the way given that they suddenly have an opportunity for power. I wonder though if any Tory MP's would vote against her to trigger a leadership contest?

The last thing the Conservatives want is a vote of no confidence/leadership contest and a general election. I doubt many of them actually think she's a good leader and PM at the moment, but trying to do anything about that now would pretty much hand the country to Labour and JC.

StrangeLookingParasite · 16/06/2017 14:35

So rather than be briefed on the problems and start to understand what's needed and then get on with her day job you would rather have her court popularity just so Mumsnet can feel righteous.

Surely she could just act like a human? There must be someone who can teach her how.

BurnTheBlackSuit · 16/06/2017 14:37

There isn't any evidence she has been busy doing all those things though. She's said we'll have a public enquiry and that's about it.

If she is taking other measures to make all tower blocks safe, then she she could very well do with publicising it...

hackmum · 16/06/2017 14:47

I don't think Theresa May is a people person. Presumably that's why she stayed out of things like leaders' debates or being interviewed on Woman's Hour. She finds ordinary, normal engagement with people difficult. On the handful of occasions she met ordinary voters during the election campaign, she looked extremely uncomfortable. It strikes me too that she doesn't have any friends - I've certainly never seen any evidence of any.

Of course this doesn't mean she's a bad person (though as it happens, I think she is a bad person). But it does suggest she doesn't have the qualities you'd look for in a leader.

BigChocFrenzy · 16/06/2017 14:52

When people are angry, frightened, grieving, those in charge do have to show their faces, even if their reception is tough & embarrassing.

Blair got a rough time from some 7/7 relatives, but he showed up
Cameron also showed up and faced up to the criticism

The Queen and Sadiq Khan both got heckled, but if the Queen at 90 can face up to that, then so should any PM.
The Queen is fantastic imo, still doing her duty at 90 FlowersFlowers and has genuine warmth towards people, whereas some elected politicians - of all parties - don't manage that.

christinarossetti · 16/06/2017 14:53

Well, it's now been a week since TM told the Queen that the DUP were willing to support her to form a minority government, and no official announcement as yet.

Also, no comment on Gerry Adam's statement that such a deal will undermine the GFA.

Runny · 16/06/2017 14:55

She displayed similar coldness in the aftermath of the Manchester bombing. She is either completley socially inept and has no emotional intelligence, or she just doesn't give a shit. I'm thinking more of the latter.

christinarossetti · 16/06/2017 15:01

The latter. And too preoccupied with brown tonguing the DUP to save her sorry arse.

Neutrogena · 16/06/2017 15:07

Neutrogena We are not all born equal though are we? How can we be?

We are subjects, she is the monarch.
We will always be subjects.

I don't mean we are all born in same class/wealth/ability etc

Fitzsimmons · 16/06/2017 15:18

It was exactly the same when the Cumbrian floods happened. JC came up and spent several hours talking to us residents, and genuinely seemed to care. Cameron spent about half an hour in a field talking to emergency services chiefs. There is no excuse, it's cowardice through and through. She's pathetic and has no place at No 10.

Maudlinmaud · 16/06/2017 15:27

I agree with the lame animal pack of wolves analogy. It's hard to watch. This must be hardest time in TM life. But its nothing capared to the people involved in these terrible tragedies
