So I haven't seen FIL for a few weeks, during that time I have been on holiday and gained weight. I have steadily been gaining anyway, since February I have put on almost a stone and a half.
FiL blurted out - are you pregnant??
I am categorically not pregnant.
I have known I am gaining weight but I am due to have my jaws broken in a few months so kind of Stuck my head in the sand thinking it will come off anyway soon.
Well after that comment I have joined back at slimming world.
Dp is not impressed and gone mad at his dad for being rude and making me join slimming world but I wasn't offended. He had a very valid point although he could have been more tactful.
So does it look like I am being a drama queen now by joining a slimming club?

Pictures in the poor man's defence, I really do look pregnant!

Hi OP! I never post on AIBu but I just logged on to add to what other posters have mentioned. Don't want to scare you but please visit your GP. that looks like serious abdominal bloating as you're so slim elsewhere Smile
I'm not a medic so what do I know, but could be a dietary thing, or as someone mentioned it can be a symptom of ovarian cancer so you want to rule that out. I had something similar and it turned out to be a blockage from endometriosis.
So to sum up please don't just go on a diet; see your GP. Flowers

HarrietKettleWasHere · 13/06/2017 19:57

Just to say, my GP did try and tell me I was 'just fat' and 'had podge' (and I was gutted) when I went to her with pain and a swollen belly and I had an ovarian cyst. So they might say that but just consider other options.

cardibach · 13/06/2017 19:58

Slimming World isn't healthy - it teaches quite bad nutrition and doesn't work long term. Have a look at rebelfit on the internet.

RebeccaNoodles · 13/06/2017 20:00

Sorry, X post! That's great that you are already going. Hopefully it's nothing. In which case prob cutting down on carbs/sugar for a bit is all you need. But don't let yourself be fobbed off - make sure they rule out ovarian or dietary problems.
I really like the dress btw!

NachoAddict · 13/06/2017 20:01

The main reason I went to the GO is feeling tired all the time literally needing a nap just to get through the days. I have had tummy ache like pms on and off for a few months too and funny bleeding but I booked a smear and that came back fine.

Getting a bit worried now. Hopefully it is just my apple shape and a few weeks of healthy eating will sort me out.

Thanks Rebecca, it looked great on when i first bought it. Wad from Boo hoo, cheap as chips.

If by "going gluten free" the poster above meant remove bread/pasta/ biscuits and most processed food, go for it.

If they mean "buy gluten free rubbish" which is full of sugar, don't.

Otherwise, good for you OP to tackle your problem, but as above, get yourself checked!

CiliatedEpithelium · 13/06/2017 20:07

I think you need to ask the GP to palpate your abdomen to see if there is anything going on. You don't look fat enough elsewhere to explain your belly OP. This is meant kindly by the way. They might send you for a scan. My DH had an abdominal cancer that we discovered in an unusual way so it's best to get checked out IMHO

PoohBearsHole · 13/06/2017 20:10

After i came back from holiday (lots of booze, lots of chips etc) I had extreme pain and heartburn waking me in the night making me think i was having a heart attack. This is apparently a common sign of gall stones but everything came back clear. The dr suggested cutting out food groups one at a time so i started with Gluten - bread, biscuits, cake but not going full on coeliac diet (i spend a lot of time out of the house and being a newbie I have just avoided the main parts of wheat in things from shop bought products).

I have to say, people have commented on my "weight loss" however I haven't actually lost any weight, I am just not pregnancy style bloated any more!

If you want to join SW do, but it literally looks like bloating fat/ pregnancy rather than all over weight. I'd try cutting out food groups individually and start with one you think you can "do" without but without depriving yourself. I know i'm a milky coffee/cheese girl so i thought i'd get rid of the bits that go with it first and it made a big difference. I have not had night time panic attacks that i'm having a heart attack, i've not had a great deal of the pain either so am sticking to this diet for a bit longer to see what happens.

Good luck

NachoAddict · 13/06/2017 20:10

Coddie my DS has diabetes so we have to be very careful on sugar content and I try bot to buy different foods for everyone so it would have to be the hard way. I don't even know what I would eat if I went gluten free so that's something to look into tonight.

I hope the doc takes me seriously. She was very dismissive when i said I thought I had under active thyroid, although she sent me for the tests so she's not all bad.

OP posts:
SweetChickadee · 13/06/2017 20:11

I would also maybe show her the December pic - it does seem odd to have gained all in one place like that, so quickly.

CountessOfStrathearn · 13/06/2017 20:12

"I have had tummy ache like pms on and off for a few months too and funny bleeding but I booked a smear and that came back fine."

Please tell your GP about the funny bleeding so you get seen properly.

For other people here, please do not rely on a smear test if you are having abnormal bleeding. A smear test is a screening test in asymptomatic women. If you are having abnormal bleeding, you need a proper discussion with a doctor and a proper examination, which may be a colposcopy.

NachoAddict · 13/06/2017 20:14

countess I didn't even mention the irregular bleeding to the doc because my smear came back clear and the bleeding had finally stopped. This was the end of April time. I have had a colposcopy and LLETZ before so just thought a smear would be enough.

ButtMuncher · 13/06/2017 20:14

Just echoing PP - I would have thought you were pregnant also on account of how slim you are elsewhere. Id definitely want a GP to investigate. Best wishes Flowers

PoohBearsHole · 13/06/2017 20:15

Oh and apparently a gluten intolerence can make you tired like you've slept for hours but feel drained and like the sleep hasn't worked. I also have chicken skin arms but they have remarkably reduced since cutting out wheat. There are alternatives but my only concession is some cheese biscuit type things to give a big if crunch, otherwise i've replaced pasta with veg and the occasional gf pita but have just bought gf flour for when I'm making the family a white sauce or just replaced that with a cheese based product/cream/yoghurt. I'm not sure i'd be as confident cutting out dairy as a lot of my replacements have featured dairy based product and i really feel for those who have intolerances to both 😔

PoohBearsHole · 13/06/2017 20:18

It's good you have a gp appointment, sometimes things can take a little longer to be discovered.

it does sound as if your gp is taking a bit of time on you though and may suggest an intolerence test in addition to other ideas. But don't let it go. Really don't.

Sidge · 13/06/2017 20:18

You do look pregnant and/or bloated.

The dress doesn't do you any favours and your posture is terrible. Stand up straight and hold your tummy in!

Worth asking the GP to feel your tummy, but it could be gas and bloating. Are you constipated?

NachoAddict · 13/06/2017 20:18

A gluten intolerance would be such a nightmare! We do eat carbs a lot, always have though and never had this reaction, can a gluten intolerance come feom nowhere? We have just switched to wholemeal everything due to D'S diabetes so thought we were doing well!

OP posts:
heyduggeeallday · 13/06/2017 20:20

My auntie had this and it was a giant cyst the size of a five month old foetus!

Sidge · 13/06/2017 20:20

Also meant to say - it's not just your tummy that's gained weight, your arms are bigger too, and your hips. So it's certainly worth looking at improving your diet overall.

NachoAddict · 13/06/2017 20:20

Sidge I am not constipated but I dart so much recently that my dp has even noticed but I just can't keep them in. I am like a walking wind insttument. That will only get worse on slimming world too with all the leafy green veg!

OP posts:
PoohBearsHole · 13/06/2017 20:25

I know it's a spellcheck thing but i'm envisioning a little dart flying out of your bottom.

EezerGoode · 13/06/2017 20:30

Bin the dress...does you no favours..you look thin in most places..perhaps a tad bloated round the middle..wind maybe?..

Chickoletta · 13/06/2017 20:33

When I put on weight it goes on my tummy only (like a man's beer belly!) and I have been congratulated on being pregnant 4 times when I was just a bit chubby. So embarrassing, but much more for the other person than for me. I joined SW a year ago after the most recent of these comments and have since lost nearly 2 stone and feel fab. Go for it if you want to and take some pity on poor mortified FIL!
