AIBU to be disgusted? I'm reading that she will allow a UK debate on abortion limits to secure the DUP's support.

She's a disgrace. I don't care if you voted Tory or Labour or for Lord Buckethead, but surely any woman must feel appalled that their rights are up for sale to secure her (untenable anyway) position.

The thread title is massively misleading and frankly completely incorrect.

Amethistle · 10/06/2017 10:13

Bertie How are there options shitty? Have the baby, adopt it, or have an abortion. What other 'non-shitty' options could there possibly be? Confused

Amethistle · 10/06/2017 10:13

*their

Glitteryfrog · 10/06/2017 10:13

but sometimes you can't get an appointment in time, or you don't realise you're pregnant until later on.

I was musing - wondered if someone had the facts.

Catgirl's statement above sums up my feelings.

BeBeatrix · 10/06/2017 10:16

from a misogynistic desire to control women and our bodies

Maybe that's behind some people wanting to restrict abortion limits.
But do you really think that 69% of women are misogynistic? Hmm

It doesn't take a great deal of research or imagination to see that there are other reasons for people to hold those views.

SuperLoveFuzz · 10/06/2017 10:19

Would the PPs who are against reducing the limit be ok with no limit? If not, what's the difference?

Dandandandandandandan · 10/06/2017 10:19

This isn't actually new - May was talking about it in 2012:

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.express.co.uk/news/uk/350562/Theresa-May-backs-calls-to-cut-time-limit-on-abortion/amp

In actual fact, the huge majority are done before 12 weeks and most done after that for medical reasons (some stats attached). If they reduced it by a few weeks, the number of people who would be affected is probably very small.

Not saying that I agree with it, as the principle isn't small, or the DUP on a LOT of things - but I do agree the thread title is misleading.

Wanting to restrict access to abortion is misogynistic, regardless of the reason.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 10/06/2017 10:20

Yes, I'd be fine with no limit. I believe women are women, and they don't become an incubator at an arbitrary point in their pregnancy.

lessworriedaboutthecat · 10/06/2017 10:21

She can allow a vote on abortion but any attempt to change the law would be voted down in parliament. If she tried to whip her MP's they would still vote against it and that would finish her. The DUP know it would never get through

therootoftheroot · 10/06/2017 10:21

If you are not already, I suggest you watch the handmaids tale. Starting to reduce women's rights is a slippery slope....

NoLoveofMine · 10/06/2017 10:22

Quite.

Also, seeking to lower the time limit on abortion, as well as being an attack on women's rights in itself, is just the first step on the path towards outlawing abortion altogether. Any erosion of abortion rights is dangerous.

MommaGee · 10/06/2017 10:22

A lot of serious problems aren't even picked up until a 20+ week scan, and people need time to make decisions, and the NHS needs time to do procedures if they are chosen* there are no restrictions if there's serious problems. They will offer you abortions again and again and then change the terminology to early induction with no intervention.

I do think the limit should be looked at, I thobk there's an issue of taking a fetus out that is viable as a baby. I don't think ethically its ok to abort a baby at 24+ weeks when there are other options.
If its medical reasons for mother and child then obviously that has to be dealt with 121 and that clearly includes mental health issues.
however we clearly should be supporting women in NI to get legal access to abortion in their own country

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 10/06/2017 10:24

Then don't do it.

charlestonchaplin · 10/06/2017 10:29

Ovaries Wanting to restrict access to abortion is misogynistic, regardless of the reason.

That is just an opinion.

user0000000001 · 10/06/2017 10:30

Good God... your OP is hysterical.

I don,t mean for being concerned about the issue, before anyone leaps on me...

I mean for the complete jump from what has actually happened to what you are stating has happened.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 10/06/2017 10:30

That is just an opinion.

Well... yes. What else would it be? Hmm

Elendon · 10/06/2017 10:31

The NHS spends hundreds of thousands of pounds on going to court to legally be allowed to let babies die because of their disabilities.

The NHS spends millions of pounds on care of premature babies, whose outcomes are uncertain.

Rightly so.

A woman's choice to terminate costs the NHS much less (unless you live in Northern Ireland). Most abortions are done within 12 weeks of being pregnant as all women are human and are able to have the wit and intelligence to know what to do with their future and their life.

2014newme · 10/06/2017 10:34

It's speculation I can't see this happening

Calm down, nothing is going to happen yet. Yes eventually there might be discussions but they would have happened anyway. Remember nothing has really changed, the DUP always voted with the Tories - this has yet to be called a coalition but simply the DUP formally saying they will continue to vote with the tories. Bribes aren't really necessary given that the DUP always did side with the Tories on important issues anyway. This is scaremongering. Spare a thought for those of us in NI who have been stuck with these dinosaurs for years. I am so sad to see that the DUP vote in my area increased by nearly 20%, they got 24k votes. The 2nd place candidate got around 5k votes. That makes me truly depressed!!!!

catgirl1976 · 10/06/2017 10:37

The issue for me is the fact the she is prepared to do anything to cling on to power and that women's rights are the first thing to be thrown under the bus. Clearly, they matter the least.

The fact that this is even being talked about just shows how tenuous they are.

OP posts:
NoLoveofMine · 10/06/2017 10:40

My sentiments exactly catgirl.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 10/06/2017 10:41

Abortion and when they still had votes on it ,the death penalty , are never whipped.

I know one is not allowed to say "hysterical" on here but the OP is hysterical.

catgirl1976 · 10/06/2017 10:43

I'm not in the least bit hysterical.

I'm disgusted.

There's a difference. Although given the provenance of the word hysteria....
