This is the best outcome by miles. No hard brexit. (The city now predicts soft Brexit or even no Brexit!!!) No more crazy ideas by either side. Compromise. Tories given a good slap in the face for this stupid election.

This is the first election day in a long time with a good result!

The point is that it will be harder to get changes through.

I don't expect to see anything very positive in the short term no.

And if you voted Tory then I am actually praying that it will come and bite you on the bum at some point. Preferably leaving you to try and get any kind of support from social care with your needs...for some of you that's what it will take for you to "get it".

How we treat those most vulnerable says a great deal about society. It tells me that the Tories and Tory voters could not actually give a shit about anyone else but themselves....until the reality hits them,.land I am nasty enough to hope it does when I see how some of my clients have to cope and live. It's beyond disgusting

TearsOnTheGround · 09/06/2017 14:27

What part of the plan are you really terrified of? (Genuine question)

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 09/06/2017 14:27

The person that lost the most seats last night was Nicola Sturgeon.

Surely Indyref2 is off the table now.

EpoxyResin · 09/06/2017 14:28

Oh Jng, TM herself qualifies before this election what would constitute a loss to her party. The very worst version of that comes true, and yet you're at pains to tell us it's a win? The majority was hers to lose. It's gone. I'm not sure quite what "deal" you think she's sealed other than buying herself a bit of time and doing the very bare minimum required.

drspouse · 09/06/2017 14:28

260 seats is way more powerful than 200 parliamentary seats; that's how our representative democracy works!!

And, you know, actual maths!

aaeg Not all the Labour MPs will toe the party line, and LibDem and SNP won't vote for a hard Brexit - neither, it sounds like it, will the DUP.

Labour not being, you know, the government, don't have to abide by their manifesto commitments. They may choose to institute a three line whip on their MPs on any Brexit vote of course - who knows?

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 09/06/2017 14:30

Tears "they have nothing to celebrate"
Ok, you carry on thinking that. you are clearly wrong

And regarding "there's nothing we can do about TM". Well it will only take about 2 of her MPs not to vote for her policy's, one example - many are very against Grammar schools, and she will not get it through parliament. So I think there's plenty "we" can do - starting with lobbying your Tory Mp, especially those in marginal seats, if you disagree with a policy.

EpoxyResin · 09/06/2017 14:31

Tears her economic plan was never going to work, in my opinion. Me and a lot of prominent economists out there think austerity is stifling our economy rather than saving it. I was scared of further decline meaning massive "catch-up" investment required further down the line. Oh yeah, and poor and disabled people suffering. They tell me they're suffering. I believe them.

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 09/06/2017 14:31

And there are a few with very very marginal seats...hi to Zac and Amber

TearsOnTheGround · 09/06/2017 14:31

It could be worse - Boris could be the PM. Now that would be fucking terrifying!

EpoxyResin · 09/06/2017 14:32

Hahaha, I'll agree about Boris!

Cuppaoftea · 09/06/2017 14:33

The 'Tory plan' will continue as before the Election, the numbers with the Tory/DUP alliance aren't that different. May won't need the DUP's support for everything.

Jng1 · 09/06/2017 14:33

Epoxy - well apart from anything else she has bought her party (if not herself) more than a 'bit of time' - up to 5 years of more time to be exact.
With their majority with the DUP they should be able to see off any call for another election within 5 years, which gives them plenty of time.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 09/06/2017 14:34

And there are a few with very very marginal seats...hi to Zac and Amber

There are also some Labour MPs with even smaller size marginal seats.

Ian Austin won by 22 votes.

TearsOnTheGround · 09/06/2017 14:34

If he ends up party leader/PM I won't be voting Tory. I'd rather vote Greens.

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 09/06/2017 14:34

Yes she will. Pretty sure all other parties will vote against her. She better start baking some pretty good cookies

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 09/06/2017 14:35

But as we have said Labour is not in power

EpoxyResin · 09/06/2017 14:36

You think this unstable alliance will last 5 years Jng? Well maybe, but it's hardly a dead cert. And to be honest they'd be the ones likely to want another GE if they're not getting much out of their weak parliamentary position, so....

TearsOnTheGround · 09/06/2017 14:37

To be honest i'd rather both parties changed their leaders (not boris though!) and do an election in a couple of years time. Corbyn will never be PM and TM is on thin ice. They need new blood!

EpoxyResin · 09/06/2017 14:38

I think inevitably they both will, certainly by the election after next, maybe even before the next one.

EpoxyResin · 09/06/2017 14:38

...whenever that might be...

TearsOnTheGround · 09/06/2017 14:40

Blair was born straight from Thatcher, hence why he gained a landslide. Had he been a left wing Corbyn "type" he wouldn't have stood a chance. Labour need a "soft" centre Tory "type" to win another election outright again.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 09/06/2017 14:40

I agree with that.

Topseyt · 09/06/2017 14:41

DUP are to give press conference in Belfast soon.

They will support May, but not unconditionally. I should think that they are as astonished as anyone at finding themselves in this position.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/06/2017 14:41

That youth vote will have put the shits up the Tory party. A lot of conservative voters are from the older generation and will be dying off in the next couple of decades

While this is true, doesn't it ignore the reality that many who back socialism to begin with tend to move more to the middle ground later on?

It's rare for anyone's views to remain absolutely static, and while the idealism of the young is a wonderful thing, I've found it often tends to become less strident when real life experience and maturity of judgement take over

EpoxyResin · 09/06/2017 14:42

I think the days of Blair-type politician's are behind us personally. Labour don't need a centrist at the helm IMO, that's what the Libs are for.
