Last night my husband asked me why I (nearly) always vote Conservative.
I have spent the past fortnight praising JC for the way he has turned his campaign round and he has certainly convinced my son that Labour are the way forward.
My vote has certainly not been the Done Deal it has been in the past.
However I was swayed away from Labour for one reason, i realised this morning.
I sound so shallow, but I can't bear the thought of being associated with the left-wing mob I have been deluged with day after day on social media and here.
Every day I have seen such infantile nonsense on Facebook from a couple of friends who have been whipping themselves into a hysterical frenzy about the Conservatives.
I get it Theresa May is not everyone's cup of tea, but a picture of her on the streets with the caption 'Hope She Gets What She Deserves on June 9' - how utterly pathetic.
I've seen awful personal attacks on people who have asked questions of Labour on QT- apparently someone is Tory Scum for having the temerity to wear a £150 jumper.
And anyone not toeing the Labour line is either scum, thick or at best needs to be taught the error of their ways. They don't understand you see.
So my AIBU is: Has the endless social media and forum posting from a vocal Left wing had the complete opposite effect to the desired one?

That seems a massive extrapolation to make from what is basically anecdotal evidence.

cathf · 08/06/2017 19:22

Well yes, I agree to a point. But it has genuinely turned me away from the Left, so is possibly a valid discussion point?

Well the endless mainstream media right wing bias has fucked me right off. I don't care who I am associated with, I make my decisions based on my beliefs and morals. So yeah, equality, fairness and opportunity is something we should all strive for so YABU in my opinion.

I think it's pretty infantile that instead of bothering to read manifestos and policies people would rather snark and snurk about "magic unicorn fucking money trees"

namechangingagainagain · 08/06/2017 19:24

It hasn't to me. I am voting labour for the first time..... In fact i joined the labour party about 30 mins ago after looking at some of the things on Jeremy corbyns Facebook page and realising a lot of it chimed with me.

Tiggles · 08/06/2017 19:24

Interesting, I have seen way more personal attacks come from the Conservative party than from the Labour party. The entire national campaign by the tories seems to be to discredit Corbyn and the only reason given to vote tory is 'because Corbyn would be a disaster' (usually more offensive language used).

harderandharder2breathe · 08/06/2017 19:25

YABU

vote on the policies not other people's reaction. By all means vote conservative but do it because you believe in at least some of what they say.

Righty hooo

Thanks for sharing

StillDrivingMeBonkers · 08/06/2017 19:25

Like you I'm often a swing voter.

I don't like extremes in any politics. But I have noticed the sweeping judgemental stereotype comes from the left - apparently voting conservative makes you want to kill disabled people. It's all so hysterical.

I certainly don't hold the view all Labour supporters are northerners in cloth caps with ferrets down their pants. Neither do I assume all conservative voters have inherited wealth, private schooling, and go fox hunting.

Some of the things I read are utterly puerile, but it would be like trying to teach pigeon to play chess. You cant and it still shits on the board.

BeeFarseer · 08/06/2017 19:25

I think it's sad that people's convictions are so fragile that they can make their minds up based on policies they agree with, but go off in a huff because a minority of people sling insults. It doesn't say much about strength of character.

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 08/06/2017 19:26

Maybe you have a 'friends' problem...

cathf · 08/06/2017 19:26

I have read the manifestoes, thank you.
You are missing the point. Do you think a pic of Theresa May on the streets with that cqptiob is likely to convince anyone to vote Labour? It had the opposite effect on me.

OP posts:
EllebellyBeeblebrox · 08/06/2017 19:26

Yep the smear campaign against JC (to say nothing of the appalling way Diane Abbott has been treated) is pretty disgusting too.

Itsjustaphase2016 · 08/06/2017 19:26

Omg yes!!! All the preaching and Tory bashing on here has completely turned me off Labour and I'm voting the opposite!!

namechangingagainagain · 08/06/2017 19:26

Oh and btw I'm not a typical labour supporter at all.... More of a rich Tory bastard really.... But i don't want to live in a country where disabled and young people are treated like shit

CowParsleyNettle · 08/06/2017 19:27

Six of one and half a dozen of the other.

I've voted and debated on policies only. My conscience is clear on that front, I've always voted for the same party but this year I read and researched a lot more before making my choice.

Ive on the whole just skimmed past personal attacks but I did call someone out for ranting about someone hating JC whilst calling all Tory supporters either brainwashed or rich twats.

It's a bloody democracy FFS we don't have to all agree!

PacificDogwod · 08/06/2017 19:27

Erm, I do not base my voting on social media information/memes/crap others post on their FB wall.

But vote whichever way you think will benefit you, your family and the greater public/country the most.

DontTouchTheMoustache · 08/06/2017 19:28

YABU that's an incredibly short sighted and shallow reason to choose who to vote for when this election will have such a large impact on so many people.

TheWitchAndTrevor · 08/06/2017 19:28

Also you don't have to tell anyone who you voted for.

So vote on the policies that suit you. Don't tell anyone then, no one can judge you and associate you with the vocal mop.

AppleMagic · 08/06/2017 19:29

No because I'm a grown up and don't cast my vote in order to spite Facebook "haterz".

Lochan · 08/06/2017 19:29

It really depends what you see on Fb. My feed has been full of fairly objectionable right wing anti labour, anti snp posts.

These things are never all one way.

Tanith · 08/06/2017 19:30

Oh come on op i'm hardly on here anymore and even i recognise you as having started loads of pro tory threads pull the other one it plays the red flag

Yep! I recognise the Op as a prolific pro-tory (and goady) poster, too.

Fortnum · 08/06/2017 19:32

A lot of the vitriol from the left is absolutely cringworthy. Im convinced that a lot of it is becoming cult like. I cant support them.
