Top intelligence official told associates Trump asked him if he could intervene with Comey on FBI Russia probe
www.washingtonpost.com/amphtml/world/national-security/top-intelligence-official-told-associates-trump-asked-him-if-he-could-intervene-with-comey-to-get-fbi-to-back-off-flynn/2017/06/06/cc879f14-4ace-11e7-9669-250d0b15f83b_story.html

*The nation’s top intelligence official told associates in March that President Trump asked him if he could intervene with then-FBI Director James B. Comey to get the bureau to back off its focus on former national security adviser Michael Flynn in its Russia probe, according to officials.

On March 22, less than a week after being confirmed by the Senate, Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats attended a briefing at the White House together with officials from several government agencies. As the briefing was wrapping up, Trump asked everyone to leave the room except for Coats and CIA Director Mike Pompeo.

The president then started complaining about the FBI investigation and Comey’s handling of it, said officials familiar with the account Coats gave to associates. Two days earlier, Comey had confirmed in a congressional hearing that the bureau was probing whether Trump’s campaign coordinated with Russia during the 2016 race.

The events involving Coats show the president went further than just asking intelligence officials to deny publicly the existence of any evidence showing collusion during the 2016 election, as The Washington Post reported in May. The interaction with Coats indicates that Trump aimed to enlist top officials to have Comey curtail the bureau’s probe.

How much longer can this administration shamble on? It's a car crash in slow motion. The Twitter thread posted last night about how they'd respond to a major infectious disease outbreak was Shock and pointed out that, by so thoroughly discrediting the media and becoming so untrustworthy, the WH has damaged its credibility in communicating actions needed in an emergency. Responders were pointing out in the replies that the FEMA Director appointment is pending as hurricane season kicks off in the southern states (Katrina, anyone?). Other responders pointed to an ongoing bird flu outbreak in China where humans are dying. Hair-raising stuff. Sad

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 07/06/2017 07:05

I thought it was frightening too, especially when they outlined how every president had faced an outbreak (AIDS, SARS,Ebola etc). It seems inevitable but how they deal with this is unlikely to be coherent or competent.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 07/06/2017 07:42

Yes - that Twitter thread gave me the chills. It really brought home how serious Trump's lack of coherent thought and ability to lead would be if there was a disaster or serious disease emergency.

Joy Reid‏Verified account @JoyAnnReid 6h

  1. Republican source tells me elected GOPers edging toward "every man for himself" re Trump. Many are waiting to see how #ComeyDay goes.

2.Source describes White House staffers as basically stuck. No one wants the open jobs & there aren't many firms itching to hire Trump alums.

  1. Recruitment for open ambassadorships etc very slow going. People are making all kinds of excuses for why they're not available to serve.

I think it's so so wrong that the two ghastly sons are speaking out in interviews and there will be plenty of favours and backhanders going on in the business. DonaldJr said he keeps his father up to date with the businesses, that is so wrong.

As an aside... I can't imagine having the surname 'Winner' and then calling my daughter 'Reality'...

originalbiglymavis · 07/06/2017 08:13

Is there nothing we can do to stop his visit? I was on the fence before (if he came I was planning on showing my contempt on person) but the whole Saddiq Kahn attack has just turned my stomach.

lionheart · 07/06/2017 08:19

edition.cnn.com/2017/06/06/politics/devin-nunes-russia-probe/index.html

I don't know if there is any way to uninvite him especially if your current PM was first in line to hold his hand. Smile

On the other hand, lots of people will be ready to welcome him. Wink

Meanwhile:

George Takei @GeorgeTakei

Sessions apparently offered to leave amid growing tensions with Donald Trump. Melania says she also wants out if the train's really leaving.

Word on the web is that Melania has been having an affair with Tiffany's head of security for years

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/06/2017 08:31

There is too much to keep up with at the moment!

Eric Trump: Dems 'not even people'

Ugh. Even as I acknowledge I don't agree with the politics if certain people, or how they express their views, they are still people - even vile ones. Even those with "Trump" as a surname are still, in the end, people. Eric Trump should not be a political voice.

originalbiglymavis · 07/06/2017 08:41

I'm thinking of the Visit.

Theres a comedy show that is rattling in head, in a scene where some bloke is being booed. 'are they booing me?' he asks 'oh no, they are cheering - booo-yahhhh'. Wish I could remember the show!

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 07/06/2017 08:52

There is too much to keep up with at the moment!

Indeed. It is like a mad Falcon's Crest/West Wing mash-up. I am rapidly losing my ability to be surprised by any of it.

originalbiglymavis · 07/06/2017 08:53

Maybe it's all just dream? Or aliens. One or the other.

BoreOfWhabylon · 07/06/2017 08:54

If the visit goes ahead, I would like to see everyone turn their backs on him, wherever he goes.

JK Rowling has tweeted that she would like to see placards of his tweets held up.

GingerIvy · 07/06/2017 08:57

Fairfield CT - Dem candidate won in Special Election. Landslide Victory.

originalbiglymavis · 07/06/2017 08:57

He would see both of these as some BIG WIN for himself.

MsHooliesCardigan · 07/06/2017 09:02

I'm clinging onto the hope of doing a Bobby Ewing and coming out of the shower to find that the last year was all a dream - we're still in the EU and Donald Trump suffered a humiliating defeat in the US election.

NoCryingInEngineering · 07/06/2017 09:03

OBM its from a Simpsons episode, Smithers reassuring Burns - "they are cheering Booooo-urns"

I'd have to Google to find more context

originalbiglymavis · 07/06/2017 09:05

Thats the one! (Was hoping for something more classy like yes minister!)

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 07/06/2017 09:10

Damn it! MissHoolie beat me to the Dallas shower scene, although my surprise come-back was going to be JFK (to show Donny boy how presidenting is really done).

Agree that the language of Eric Trump is dehumanising. Although this seems to be a cultural theme in lots of parts of America - dehumanising whether you are black, gay, female, Democrat ... These groups don't fit with the white Christian narrative that seems to be dominant.

How much do you bet that Trump Juniors will have political designs for the future?

I also know on a rational level that it is wrong to judge someone on their looks, but Eric just looks weird and creepy. Like someone cut out a magazine cutting of a mouth that's too small and glued it onto his face.

Can't wait for Comey tomorrow!

CaveMum · 07/06/2017 11:04

Seven questions for Comey: www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-40166679

What time does it all kick off?

Can everyone else get through to Twitter? I can't get on proper.y to read things.
