Also there is the Irish border question for the DUP, which will certainly effect their stance on hard Brexit as I believe they want a soft border. Nothing is really what you would think it seems.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 09/06/2017 07:04

Also, DUP are a Northern Irish party. Northern Ireland was strongly remain and Brexit would be a huge headache for NI and the Good Friday Agreement. The DUP may not want to formally enter into a coalition with the Tories in Westminster and prop up their Brexit ambitions - it would be toxic for them at home.

Good morning. And good night. It's bedtime here. Looking forward to catching up with the thread after a few hours sleep.

I've mentioned it before but thus is what happened in Portugal last year.

Right wing party wins more votes but not overall majority.

Left wing parties did get over 50% in Parliament.

Right wing party asked to form government, but can't make deal for majority and is shot down by left.

Left wing parties make deal, but not coalition with the most voted left wing party, who was asked to form a government by the President on a second round.

I wonder if the UK will have a similar scenario.
Hopefully not as Spain recently or Belgium a few years ago.

I'm keeping m fingers crossed that things will still be in such disarray in the autumn after this election that we'll have postpone Donnie's state visit, hopefully for ling enough for impeachment actions to kick in.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 09/06/2017 07:17

Gah! Typos aplenty ^ but you get the general idea.

Roussette · 09/06/2017 07:18

Morning all! What a night! Sleep, wake, turn on telly, roll over sleep. Rinse and repeat hourly. I'm knackered!

Just heard Zac Goldsmith has scraped in, can't believe that.

As Bigly says Across without a clear majority I really don't think Tory can swing any more to the right, they are severely weakened. The DUP wanted out of EU but whether they'll do a deal with Tory, who knows.
.
My constituency isn't in yet... it always is one of the last dammit!

And Zac Goldsmith scraped in by 40 votes with 3 recounts, the Lib Dems and my DD are gutted with that one.

"Tory HOusing Minister who wrote a book on how to win a marginal seat loses marginal seat"

I hope he's having scrambled egg for brekky and he got a bit on his face Grin

PerkingFaintly · 09/06/2017 07:59

From that Guardian link:

"Sir Craig Oliver, David Cameron’s former director of communications at Downing Street, came to a similar verdict on Sky News. 'If this is true, if this is accurate, in CCHQ there will be deep and lasting shock,” he said. 'It was the biggest gamble a politician has taken for a long time and if that exit poll is right, it’s failed.'"

"Long time" meaning "since last year"?

Looks like Theresa May will have ended up making the worst decision out of any Tory prime minister since, well, the last one.

We know Theresa May can't now negotiate Brexit for Britain because she told us losing majority would destroy her authority---and it has.

Is it daft that after last night, as well as all our discussions on here, I've been looking into the idea of doing a Politics course? I'm feeling more engaged with politics than I ever have in the past and my default is to want to learn more
