to think we should have a "date joined" shown against our user names

so that those posters who clearly have joined in order to promote their political views only, are shown for what they are?

no matter what party you vote for, when you try to discuss something here, there are posters who are determined to close you down or present facts when they aren't true

I think the older posters here and the newbies too I guess, would appreciate knowing how recently some of these posters joined....or not as the case may be.

I dont mind getting into a heated debate with genuine MN posters, we cant all be on the same side, that would be very boring, but when someone suddenly joins a few weeks before the general election and is all over political threads saying the same thing over and over, it dampens debate and is shit, frankly

It is on some other forums I belong to and I would be happy with it.

If we could edit people would change their posts for all manner of reasons. I could see that it would cause more trouble than it's worth.^

Generally, boards that allow editing, only allow a post to be edited before any replies have been posted - it would help a bit on MN where formatting is quite effort-intensive and easy to get wrong.

I really do wish that there was a button that allowed you to 'un-see' certain posters and their posts.

Quite a few boards have an "ignore" function, which allows you to killfile specific posters.

BarnsligRav · 05/06/2017 14:33

Lurking a hover would be no good for mobile users though, of which there are ever increasing numbers.

I think a month and year joined (not specific date) notation would be good, and I say that as a frequent name changer.

I am also in favour of an edit function, with the caveat that the unedited post could be seen at a click, to prevent people completely changing the essence of what they said, as opposed to correcting a typo, grammatical mistake, replying to wrong poster name etc.

Oh god yes.

.......However now that I'm thinking about it the ones who I really want to avoid change their names every month. It only takes 5 mins to recognise them, but by that stage you have read their thread and are so annoyed you haven't managed to avoid them again.

Luncharmstrong · 05/06/2017 16:04

1999 does that help ?

AmyGMumsnet · 05/06/2017 17:27

Hi ssd - thanks for the suggestion. We'd be a bit worried that it might encourage trollhunting - and might also make new joiners a bit hesitant to post.

If there's a big upswell of support for this in the future we'll look again, but at this point we've got no plans along these lines. Do, though, report any specific poster whom you're concerned about and we'll gladly take a look.

Coastalcommand · 05/06/2017 17:33

I can't fathom how anyone could care?

LorLorr2 · 05/06/2017 17:37

I think it's worth considering, not especially for political posts but just in general to get a feel for who you're replying to. Then again, would 'newbies' get looked down upon while oldies cackle at them patronisingly? Lol, not sure.

MissShittyBennet · 05/06/2017 17:46

Nah, messes with anonymity too much. On a site with this kind of reach, anything making it harder for posters to hide themselves is going to be detrimental.

It's a good idea IMO.

I think bots, paid or unpaid, are worse than trolls. It's not as bad as during the Brexit campaign - yet - it's only Monday.

user1471545174 · 05/06/2017 21:16

YABU, I've been here since 2007 with three normal usernames that all stopped working.

Yes missshittybennett, mumsnet know they'd have tragic oversharing resulting in mass exodus to a site that allows either self-edit or regular name-changing. If they disallow namechanges without ability to clear one's own backlog of overshare, that wouldn't work for at least half the posters here

Sparklingbrook · 05/06/2017 21:27

I think it's a great idea. (Oct 2011)

Highalert · 05/06/2017 21:37

I been here years. I've de-regged and re-regged loads of times though,.So I'd look like a noob.

I don't think I care enough anymore. I just ignore most of the goady shite now.

ssd · 05/06/2017 21:52

thanks for replying to me Amy, I'm not concerned about anyone at all, I don't actually know what troll hunting means Blush, it was more in relation to the election and some posters only posting on political threads and trying to take over them..

won't matter soon anyway!!

It's probably a good time to take a MN mini break and come back a week after the election results . It's going to be Hmm around here.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 05/06/2017 21:57

I agree, good idea.

But....,, first time posters posting something controversial should be allowed

ssd · 05/06/2017 22:00

I can't take a break sm, I get drawn in too easily! Grin

OP posts:
paxillin · 05/06/2017 22:05

Can I find out when I joined? Does it say somewhere on my MN?

ssd · 05/06/2017 22:05

my suggestions wasn't to deter new posters, it was to suss out someone that posts multiple times on certain threads and not post elsewhere on the boards

OP posts:
troodiedoo · 05/06/2017 22:06

Used to have that on channel 4 forums many moons ago, and the number of posts you'd done. You got stars for reaching milestone numbers. So whenever you got close to a star you'd post a load of guff.
