to think we should have a "date joined" shown against our user names

so that those posters who clearly have joined in order to promote their political views only, are shown for what they are?

no matter what party you vote for, when you try to discuss something here, there are posters who are determined to close you down or present facts when they aren't true

I think the older posters here and the newbies too I guess, would appreciate knowing how recently some of these posters joined....or not as the case may be.

I dont mind getting into a heated debate with genuine MN posters, we cant all be on the same side, that would be very boring, but when someone suddenly joins a few weeks before the general election and is all over political threads saying the same thing over and over, it dampens debate and is shit, frankly

It was called 'Boardreader' IIRC ssd. It really was the board of shame as to how much time spent on MN. I can't get the site up now, but was pretty horrific to see.

I use MN far less now which is probably for the best.

MissShittyBennet · 06/06/2017 18:27

When I respond to a post I hardly look at the name of the poster and if I do look at who it is, 99% of the time I don't recognise them because so many people NC these days.

I wonder if you're unusually disinclined to pay attention to these sorts of things. I recognise posters all the time. We're evidently at different extremes. This is before we consider the people who genuinely want and try to find out who people are.

And yes, of course there'd be superiority complexing over newbies. Not being a newbie myself, I'm not that arsed, but it's a common enough thing on forums where join dates are visible. Even on here, people make remarks like no wonder you're talking shit you've a user9million name (to be fair, sometimes not entirely inaccurate).

But I think it's the impact this would have on anonymity that's the main reason MN will never go for the OPs proposal.

ssd · 06/06/2017 18:28

I must have missed that.

I really don't know if I use MN more or less than I used to, its fits and troughs really.

Oh yes, I remember that post tally site. How embarrassing it was. One more reason to name change!

I am definitely on here less. I used to start loads of threads, but rarely do now.

Here's a thread from 2013 discussing Boardreader. It's a bit of cheese thread with lots of deletions now but gives you the general idea.

ssd · 06/06/2017 18:40

I recognise hardly anyone here these days and I'm amazed if more than one or two posters recognise me.

Even the threads where older posters show up leave me baffled, I might know their name but don't usually recall their backstory, if they have one.

There is one poster here I can't bare to see being criticised though and I'll jump on anyone who has a go at her, even though we've never "spoke". I guess that's what happens if you're here a while.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 06/06/2017 18:42

I don't know how it can be done, but can we please, please sort out the Professional Political Posters?

It's doing my head in.

Sparklingbrook · 06/06/2017 18:43

I can't remember the poster that suggested it but someone said one Topic where no namechanging was allowed would be a good idea. People would actually be 'allowed' to know a bit about each other without others getting snarky.

Dawndonnaagain · 06/06/2017 18:44

It's doing everyone's head in Chardonnay, but people name change. There are people here, on this thread, with a posting history of a week. How do we know?

Dawndonnaagain · 06/06/2017 18:44

ssd, I recognise you! Smile

Dawndonnaagain · 06/06/2017 18:45

Sparkling, that's a good idea!

paxillin · 06/06/2017 18:46

That was Worra, Sparklingbrook. HQ are still "thinking about" it.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 06/06/2017 18:46

Some are so blatant, really, can't miss them.

Last year was the same thing.

"long time posters have a posse of clingers on/bum lickers around them"

Agree Pax - it's the same bitter people who see Mums at the school gates chatting and laughing and immediately label them as hissy cliques ...err, no, they just happen to know each other, that's all.

Sparklingbrook · 06/06/2017 19:02

I do feel that I am not able to allude to knowing a little bit about posters who don't N/C so resort to PMs a lot of the time.
It is frowned upon to remember anything about anyone and admit to it it seems.

Sparklingbrook · 06/06/2017 19:03

Thanks pax, MNHQ have a very long 'thinking about it' list. I think a 'Like' button will be introduced before anything we have suggested sadly.

ssd · 06/06/2017 19:09

I like the thought of the ladies at MN towers pondering their "thinking about it list" Grin

OP posts:
Wecks · 06/06/2017 19:11

It doesn't matter if you NC, the profile still gives original date of joining. I've only used this name recently but my profile shows 2008.

Tanith · 06/06/2017 19:11

Disinterested suggestion: You could stop new joiners from the day an election is announced until the day after the election? Have a temporary "Guest" username for the between dates.

Maybe open newbies a month after the election, thinking about it - then you don't have to endure the inevitable crowing and abuse afterwards Wink

ssd · 06/06/2017 19:15

oh God if it goes the way I think it'll go I'll be throwing my laptop at the wall
