to think we should have a "date joined" shown against our user names

so that those posters who clearly have joined in order to promote their political views only, are shown for what they are?

no matter what party you vote for, when you try to discuss something here, there are posters who are determined to close you down or present facts when they aren't true

I think the older posters here and the newbies too I guess, would appreciate knowing how recently some of these posters joined....or not as the case may be.

I dont mind getting into a heated debate with genuine MN posters, we cant all be on the same side, that would be very boring, but when someone suddenly joins a few weeks before the general election and is all over political threads saying the same thing over and over, it dampens debate and is shit, frankly

Wecks, that only works if your profile is open to viewing.

Sparklingbrook · 06/06/2017 19:17

I disabled my profile after Jeffgate.

sobeyondthehills · 06/06/2017 19:25

Everything that has been mentioned on this thread Netmums have.

You can change your user name to an anon name
They have date of joining
How many posts.

It might be worth having a look round there to see if you like it, with regards to how it is moderated and such like. To see whether MN's would still be the same site if those sort of things came in

ssd · 06/06/2017 19:27

that sounds too much like hard work sobey

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 06/06/2017 19:32

Yes but NM have all of that and more unnecessary stuff- plus no swears.

sobeyondthehills · 06/06/2017 19:39

It does, but also a lot less posts shoved in the mail and also I think less trolls, or less people being obvious about the trolling. Its also easier to get banned.

My point is I don't think you can have the freedom that we do have MN's with the rules from NM's.

I do agree the political threads should be moved straight away, I don't understand being able to block certain topics and then still be bombarded with the threads you are activitely trying to avoid

I also think it's a good idea

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 06/06/2017 20:37

Disinterested suggestion: You could stop new joiners from the day an election is announced until the day after the election? Have a temporary "Guest" username for the between dates.

I quite like this.
But the guest name has too be different from the dreaded user, otherwise it will be confusing.
A nice big "newbieChadonnay" will do.

sexymuthafunker · 06/06/2017 20:41

Erm surely there are people becoming 1st time mums joining every day? Would this mean everyone would think they were journalists if they expressed an opinion?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 06/06/2017 20:44

They are more than welcome to join every day, even the not mums, and even the 2nd time mums. Hmm

The problem is the PPP joining just to spew propaganda.

MissShittyBennet · 06/06/2017 21:09

MissShitty how on earth can you tell who is new and who isn't with all the user numbers and NC's?

Userseveralnumbers is new posters. Like user342389478547 or whatever. Started a few months ago, I'm not sure why. I think they're trying to fix it or maybe have in the past couple of weeks, but certainly there have been people pointing out the newbie status of people with those monikers.

sexymuthafunker · 06/06/2017 23:05

Chardonnay I was imagining that 2nd or 3rd time mum's might have already joined. Just saying that someone being new and voicing their political opinion doesn't necessarily mean they are journalists does it? There is a very important election coming up and it makes even us normal mortals get pretty worked up to think we are likely to have to endure more years of that cold hearted bitch being PM iyswim?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 06/06/2017 23:09

They can still join, as can non mothers, or even non fathers, but it's helpful to know they are new, and possibly PPP.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 06/06/2017 23:12

No not really. People often name change for privacy reasons, don't they.
Mumsnet is the only place some people have to off load and ask for advice.

SoupDragon · 07/06/2017 07:16

it's helpful to know they are new, and possibly PPP.

You can tell they are possibly new by using advanced search. Of course they might just be a name change but with the date idea they might just be new so that balances out. Also, once someone has registered for one election, the username is there for all future ones with an earlier "join date"

I don't think it solves anything really.

LadyinCement · 07/06/2017 10:40

Banning people before and after an election would be ok in "normal" times, but recently it's been election after election after election (and possibly another one needed after this one?!) so genuine people would never get a chance to join.

I half agree about the moving of posts to the appropriate area. I have a few topics hidden but the subject appears frequently in active convos because people would rather post in AIBU than anything else. It's merely irritating when people post, "AIBU to wonder how I should cook sausage stew?" but upsetting when the AIBU is on a more sensitive topic.

Perhaps there should be a NEW POSTERS CHARTER to sign. Another one that annoys me is people posting without checking that another thread is running on the same issue. It's either laziness or self-aggrandisement where they want everyone to respond to their OP. Also, when ds was choosing a university, I read all the old threads and did not post, "Any opinions on SmellyTown University?" when there were already 50 million of them.

Otoh (supreme fence sitter here) I don't like it (although it doesn't happen so much now) when someone raises a topic and the response is, "Yawn... we so discussed that in 2007."
