DrumsAndRoses · 04/06/2017 22:15

Just watched Wonder Woman earlier today and I'm not sure if I want to be her or if I want to marry her. DP doesn't agree and thinks that Mila Kunis would make a much better WW. AIBU or is she?

OP posts:
sleepyowl12 · 07/06/2017 02:02

Israel situation is so complex. I wish the country had peace for Israeli citizens and Palestinians in the occupied terrotories.

Back to OP, you have made me wish to see this film when it comes out on DVD. Gal Gadot is very beautiful.

Groupie123 · 07/06/2017 02:13

she's in a film. That's it. Nothing heroic about her. Find a proper real life female hero to worship.

theaveragewife · 07/06/2017 05:55

I see your point ofa I'm not a huge ScarJo fan, I also don't think she's been given enough time to be much more than a facilitator as Black Widow.

Just found out Batgirl is being made too Shock

chronicleink · 07/06/2017 07:08

Groupie123 - You talk as if female leads in movies, HEROIC leads, were 10 a penny, but they're not. Most modern films wouldn't even pass the Bechdel test, and Jessica Chastain who was a judge a Cannes said that she found many of the depictions of women that she was seeing in the films 'disturbing'.
This is about representation. I want my DCs to see a great film where the heroine gets to do all the cool stuff that the boys get to do, instead of standing on the sidelines admiring them do
It.
I've seen it and I'll be taking my DCs to see it too because is brilliantly done as well as having a Charismatic FEMALE kick ass hero.

mothertruck3r · 07/06/2017 09:10

Thank God for sensible honest Israelis like Noam Chomsky.

Fucking hell, the ignorance in this one is strong. Having a Hebrew name does not make you Israeli. He is Jewish. Do you honestly not know the difference? You sound completely ignorant!

seoulsurvivor · 07/06/2017 09:15

mothertrucker you know instead of attacking her, you could just explain the difference?

I'm sure there are thing you are completely ignorant about that we could all mock you for.

What is the point in being so rude? Does it make you feel clever or something?

AntiopeofThemyscira · 07/06/2017 09:43

Indeed Seoul but that's not the MN way is. The MN way is to be as vicious as possible and seemingly delight in doing so when someone says something remotely out of line or incorrect.

I loved the entire movie, GG was perfect and I didn't think CP was wooden, I thought they had fab chemistry. Best bit was the beginning when the Amazons were training and fighting, I got chills watching that. I will be taking my ten year old dd to see it at the weekend. My 14 year old ds gave me a nudge and said "well I think that definitely passed the Bechdel test didn't it mum?" as we left the cinema, which made me proud Smile

histinyhandsarefrozen · 07/06/2017 09:46

What is the point in being so rude?

I wouldn't mock someone who doesn't understand the difference between an Israeli and a Jew.

I also wouldn't mock someone who doesn't understand the meanings of 'semite' and 'anti-semitic' .

I wouldn't even mock someone who doesn't understand that you can be a Zionist and campaign for peace or for Palestinians or for a 2 state solution.

However if that same 'confused' person ALSO came out with arrogant crap like:

Some really stupid comments on here.
Some of you really need to do some research.
"Gal is a nasty Zionist*

Then yeah, I think she deserves to be called ignorant and aggressive.

As for her comment about Noam Chomsky - Grin I know what it means.

samG76 · 07/06/2017 09:49

Seoul/Antiope - Mothertruck3r probably thought the difference is so obvious that it would be insulting to set it out.

EG Sadiq Khan is British, though he has a Muslim name, which could suggest he is from, eg, Pakistan. Most people understand this. In fact, if someone referred to him as a Pakistani it would probably be considered racist. Different rules apply to Jews, of course, especially on the left...

seoulsurvivor · 07/06/2017 09:54

histiny I don't think someone being rude is grounds for being rude back.

sam not everything is as obvious as one might think. We only know what we know and even if we think the person is being deliberately obtuse, it is still infinitely better to calmly explain the difference while explaining that they could appear racist to do otherwise.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 07/06/2017 09:56

I disagree, seoul Grin She WAS really rude.

seoulsurvivor · 07/06/2017 09:58

I didn't say she wasn't rude. I just don't see how you can complain about someone being rude if you are then rude back.

When our kids do that, we give them a bollocking but we think it's ok as adults.

alizondevice · 07/06/2017 10:03

Absolutely loved Wonder Woman and Gal Gadot. The best female empowerment kick since Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 07/06/2017 10:06

When people shout at me in the street, I shout Fuck off at them. I can still complain about them. And will continue to do so. Sometimes 'rude' is an appropriate response.

seoulsurvivor · 07/06/2017 10:11

histiny shouting at someone in the street crosses a line from rude to abusive, therefore all bets are off.

hibbledobble · 07/06/2017 11:07

I presume the anger directed at Gal Gadot is not just because she is Israeli, or even because she is a zionist, but because she is an Israeli Jew.

At least 20% of Israel is not jewish: they are a combination of Muslim, Christian and others. The druze are staunchly zionist, and a greater proportion of them do national service than the Israeli Jews, yet no one calls them 'nasty zionists'. It seems therefore that the vitriol directed at Gal Gadot is at least in part anti -semitic.

GhostsToMonsoon · 07/06/2017 11:32

I'd never heard of Gal until I read this week that Lebanon has banned Wonder Woman from being shown in cinemas there because she is Israeli.

(Last time I looked into this, Lebanon does not allow even third and fourth generation Palestinian refugees to have Lebanese citizenship or work in certain professions, e.g. medicine).

Even the BDS campaign doesn't advocate boycotting Israelis on an individual basis.

makeourfuture · 07/06/2017 11:35

Just have to say, having popped in to find out who Gal Gadot is.....thread didn't end up as I thought it would.

GhostsToMonsoon · 07/06/2017 12:02

If she were any other nationality I expect it would just have been a discussion of her looks, acting ability and the merits of the film.

Scandelicious · 07/06/2017 12:29

Ghosts

It's even worse. Lebanon doesn't let Palestinians own property! A Palestinian Lebanese friend told me that they have to get family with foreign nationalities to buy property- because foreigners are allowed but explicitly not Palestinians.

lylasmam2012 · 07/06/2017 12:48

She is so so so so so so so ridiculously beautiful. Wonder Woman was amazing, I brought my almost 5 year old DD and was near tears the whole time at this absolutely wonderful film that showed women as fierce and strong and powerful. My DD has now decided that her name is Wonder Woman and I had to tell her carers in creche that that's what she wants to be called now.....and I'm thrilled!

BagelGoesWalking · 07/06/2017 13:37

Lylasmum That's how my DD17 feels! She wants to go and live on the island and learn kick-ass moves! She went with friends so I have yet to see it, but I will.

Agree with what another PP said about Buffy - me and DD are working our way through the seasons at the moment. She saw it when she was about 13/14 but it's the first time for me. I love it! So funny as well and I can have my grown up crush on Giles Grin

sleepyowl12 · 07/06/2017 14:31

I didn't view that the person who criticised her on this thread were doing it simply because she is an Israeli Jew. I viewed it as they were criticising her for expressing her support for her country's army during the time of the Israeli-Gaza conflict in 2014 which saw a high number of Palestinian civilians killed. Not all Israeli Jews supported their army going into Gaza then.

Scandelicious · 07/06/2017 14:53

Just wondering if she were British and expressed support and concern for the British army during the Iraq war (many many Iraqi civilians killed), if she would get this criticism? Especially if she has served herself

She didn't say if she did or did not support the Israeli government, she expressed support for the armed forces of her own country

McTufty · 07/06/2017 15:00

She didn't say if she did or did not support the Israeli government, she expressed support for the armed forces of her own country

Genuine question: have you seen the post in question? What did you think she meant by "we are right" if not to express agreement with the Israeli government? If you have seen it, you may or may not object to the post yourself (as is your right) but you cannot credibly say that the only reason one could take exception to it is anti-semitism.

And yes, speaking for myself, if a British person had posted in similar terms about how great our army is without any nod to the dead in response to news about how a British army operation had killed thousands of people, I would react in exactly the same way. It was a horrible, horrible post.
