Help DH and me solve this silly maths argument

ADayGivingMeHope · 04/06/2017 21:34

Ok it's not an AIBU but we need this argument settled!!

I am 30.

I just said to my DH that I am MORE than half his age...
We are talking about someone on TV who is 70
DH says I am LESS than half his age.

Half his age is 35. I am 40 years younger than him so surely I am MORE than half his age?

DH says half his age is 35 and I am 30 so I'm less than half his age...

Tell us who is right please!

Your DH is right, sorry OP!

Nelly5678 · 04/06/2017 22:26

Dh do a maths class geeze it's not hard

jarhead123 · 04/06/2017 22:28

Your husband is right

IonaMumsnet · 04/06/2017 22:29

Evening OP. We've changed your thread title, as requested.

Iamastonished · 04/06/2017 22:30

Did you pass maths GCSE?

sleepingdragons · 04/06/2017 22:31

You're confusing two things.

More than 30 years his junior is correct.
But
Less than half his age is also correct.

In the first example, it's about the size of the difference - which gets bigger the younger you are.

In the second it's about YOUR age compared to 35. Your age is less than 35.

Xmasbaby11 · 04/06/2017 22:32

DH is right.

Maybe don't get into any more math related arguments with him (or anyone else)!

Dingalingalingaling · 04/06/2017 22:34

Maybe I should switch my math brain off. I'm tired!
And its MATHS, not math. You're rubbish at English too!

Eolian · 04/06/2017 22:35

Your dh is right. If an orange had 12 segments and I gave you 4 of them, I'd be giving you less than half the orange. 30 is less than half of 70.

PedaloBar · 04/06/2017 22:35

I think you might have been my boss once. Or is that hence.

IloveBanff · 04/06/2017 22:35

OP, are you really thick, really drunk or both?

viques · 04/06/2017 22:36

DH.

DrinkReprehensibly · 04/06/2017 22:36

With this turn of phrase, your DH is right but I can see your logic. I'd have said "you're not even half his age" depending on the context of the conversation.

Brogad0ccio · 04/06/2017 22:36

Sorry, I thought I was cracking an original joke.. And I've had less than no wine.

innagazing · 04/06/2017 22:38

It would have been clearer to say that he is more than twice your age....
I can see what both you and your husband mean, but neither is very clear- if I had to choose, I would side with you

Orlantina · 04/06/2017 22:38

If you did a test of 100 questions and you got 'less than half right', you'd get under 50 right.

BritInUS1 · 04/06/2017 22:42

Your OH is correct

cherish123 · 04/06/2017 22:43

Seriously! If I have read this correctly, you are 30 and man on TV is 70. Half a 70yr old's age is 35. You are younger than this, so you are less than half his age. DH is correct.

I understand your thinking but annoyingly DH is right Wink
I guess you were thinking backwards/downwards from the 70 year old's age.

Empireoftheclouds · 04/06/2017 22:47

Omfg really?

Joinourclub · 04/06/2017 22:48

Let your husband dish up the pizza

catkind · 04/06/2017 22:57

I can sort of see where you're coming from OP.

I lost more than half my body weight.
The price was more than halved.
Your age is his age more than halved
You are more than half his age younger than him
(bit of a stretch those last two but I wouldn't say incorrect!).

But the original statement was a simple your age (number) is _ half his age (number). So has to be less than.

MontyPythonsFlyingFuck · 04/06/2017 23:08

Please, please tell me you didn't pass GCSE Maths.

scottishdiem · 04/06/2017 23:09

DH is correct.
